Chlorophyllum Rachodes (or similar) ID?
    #20565072 -

I'm 99 percent sure this is a shaggy parasol of sorts (rachodes I presume) but thought I'd double check here before proceeding to the dehydrator. They were collected a couple days ago and are partially sun dried. Once I am able to confirm the ID I am going to dry them completely.

They were collected in a wooded area in Minnesota growing beneath mixed deciduous forest. The caps are extremely large, approximately 6-8 inches across. Gills white, staining reddish where damaged. The stems were tall, sturdy and very fibrous with an enlarged bulb at the base and a root like structure that clung to the forest floor debris. The stems were fairly smooth and reddened where touched.

There was a very prominent, felt-like ring on the stems that was easy to break loose and slide up and down the stem. I must have broke the one off of the mushroom in the pic.

I didn't officially spore print them only because I've looked at C. Molybdites many times and every single time that I have found one as large as these, the greenish hue from the spores was clearly evident in the gills. These showed no such hue, just white with reddish brown staining where damaged. I let them sit, gills down, atop my white freezer for a day and a half and don't see any green spores and the gills have not turned greenish as they always seem to in C. Molybdites. I'd imagine that the top of my freezer is covered in white spores... Anyway, Shaggy Parasols, Yes??

I would say that one is well mature enough to have started to change if it were C. molybdites, but they always make me nervous.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

I agree but they make me nervous as well since they do resemble C. Molybdites. Although, to me, these appeared far shaggier than any C. Moly that I have seen. Also, finding them in the middle of the woods pointed away from C. Moly. I collected about 10 of them, all very mature, and none showed any sign of green gills. Just white with rusty colors where damaged.

Are there any other defining characteristics aside from spore print that would separate the two?

Not really. C. molybdites seems to love warmer weather, but I don't think that's a rule.

Here is a pic of the entire collection that sat, gills down, atop my white chest freezer for two days. The top of the freezer shows no green spores and the gills show zero green discoloration.

You can rule out C. molybdites. They look like C. rhacodes or close, although I am not sure what Macrolepiota and Chlorophyllum you have in Minnesota so I wouldn't say for sure.

Are you ruling out Molybdites due to the lack of green hues in the mature gills or other indicators?

Between being found in the woods, during a cool weather spell, in central Minnesota, zero evidence of green spores in very mature specimens and a cap that is far shaggier than any Molybdites that I have ever seen, I am sure they are not Molybdites. However, I'd feel awful if I made anybody sick so I want to be 1,000 % sure that they are safe.

The gills, the fact there are no green spores on your freezer and the basal bulb.  But I'm glad you've asked me to clarify, in case I was wrong. See if there are white spores on the freezer.

There is plenty of white residue on top of the freezer, much of which I'm sure is spores. No sign of green which there should have been plenty of if they were Molybdites.

I did sample a few bites after frying in a  bit of butter. They brown up nicely and the flavor is quite strong and rich. I'm in the process of drying now, which I've heard intensifies the flavor even more.
