Although the tree is dead it still looks like a hardwood to me. You be the judge. Some pics of grandaddy's grandchild as well:

My coolest find today was this guy. I put him on the Reishi for a photo-shoot.

If it is hardwood the best bet is Ganoderma curtisii, especially with the blue discoloration it has going on there. Curtisii starts out predominantly yellow in color, and as it ages it will either stay yellow, or turn a deep red, sometimes with brilliant blue or purple hues. I suspect the ones that stay yellow as they age are a different species than the ones that turn red. I am still looking into it and collecting samples for comparison. The ones that stay yellow often also have a thicker squatter stem.  Fun fact about Ganoderma curtisii! Apparently it is the closest genetic relative to the traditional Asian Ganoderma.

You are welcome.  They look like soft lovely flowers, and it is an extremely nice photograph, as well.  I think they would look quite nice growing within a small wooden barrel.

I really love the critter, while happy it was not ruining the other mushrooms.  I believe the host is a white oak, Quercus alba L., but possibly a post oak, Quercus stellata, also sold as white oak.  The leaves upon the one next to it are simply too distant to discern the difference.

Lol, cute as the critter happens to be, you should seriously consider sending the photograph off for proper identification,

DPIHelpLine@FreshFromFlorida.com

in the event our invasive species has hitched a ride further north than we are currently aware, and especially since you note it as unusually large for what you are accustomed to finding up there (or anywhere).  Our monster, the giant African land snail, Archatina (Lissachatina) fulica is known to reach eight inches, and can be highly dangerous as well as destructive (Meningitis, as well as eats everything, over 500 types of plants, as well as houses and electronics).

It has been occurring for quite some time now, but notifications from the past few days indicate a northern expansion:

Yes, Mrcloudy.  They are like the Borg; thus, war has been declared.

I do not believe such is what dx found, but he may have encountered another one of the South American snails. Perhaps they are trying to outrun the African snails, in order to survive:

"SURVEY: Many snails, including those discussed here, are known to possess toxins or harbor parasites that can affect or infect humans. While short-term handling of a snail by the shell is probably safe, it is strongly recommended to wear gloves when handling them. Always wash hands thoroughly after handling snails and do not touch your face or mouth with dirty hands."

This is why I never eat fresh mushrooms,slugs/snails can carry some pretty nasty shit that you don't want inside you.
We all know how much slugs/snails love to eat fungus and crawl all over them leaving those shiny trails and droppings on them.
The best thing to do to avoid eating slug tainted fungus is to make tea bringing the water and shrooms to a quick boil thus killing any nasty shit the slugs/snails could have left behind.
Same thing goes for the choice edibles I find.I wash them well and fully cook before eating. If I remember correctly one of the parasites they carry attacks the brain and can be deadly.

The mushrooms I eat come from the grocery store, and that has worked well for me, thus far.

Those are the ones that will kill you! Stamets talks about how Agaricus bisporus from the store is full of pesticides.

The snail didn't look any different from the ones I have seen besides the fact that it was huge! I had a picture comparing it to my finger but it was blurry so I deleted it. I am really glad you guys like it though. I spent ten minutes taking about 15 shots and only kept the ones I posted.

This appears to be a relevant read:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23485617

I will only keep them three days, and toss what may remain, being that I am cautious, having been tested with an allergy to mold.  I have little concern over the ones selected and prepared at the places where I dine, being that they are high-end, and so the managers and chefs are beyond selective and particular regarding all things; although, I will order from Pizza Hut upon extremely rare occasion, and cannot say that I am confident in their ways, especially these days.

I copied one of your snail photographs to nominate it, but have simply yet to do so, being that I am not fond of my laptop nor length of my fingernails (royal pain).  I would love to know what kind the little critter happens to be, though.
