I will only keep them three days, and toss what may remain, being that I am cautious, having been tested with an allergy to mold.  I have little concern over the ones selected and prepared at the places where I dine, being that they are high-end, and so the managers and chefs are beyond selective and particular regarding all things; although, I will order from Pizza Hut upon extremely rare occasion, and cannot say that I am confident in their ways, especially these days.

I copied one of your snail photographs to nominate it, but have simply yet to do so, being that I am not fond of my laptop nor length of my fingernails (royal pain).  I would love to know what kind the little critter happens to be, though.

I don't really worry to much about it. I was just being argumentative. I have the worst allergies too. Sounds like you just really live life on the edge!:rotfl:

Well fuckin nominate it, right after you trim your damn finger nails. That picture is badass! When are you going to find some mushrooms Miss. "Shroom Detective"???

:noway2:  Nope! Not until you find out exactly which species the snail happens to be, as well as the pink mushrooms, and also wash your filthy hands and potty mouth out with soap.  I looked at the suggestion Maynard was kind enough to make upon your behalf, but I don't know.  You will have to send the photograph off to your county ext. office, or the link I provided can probably help you, as well.  I do not do my own manicures, nor feel like going to the spa.  I already found two mushrooms, posted the photographs, and that was enough to last me through summer, maybe even fall.

Im searching for an I.D. I doubt it is keenans suggestion. It seemed like snails were getting a bad rap in this thread. I just read some good things about that annoying slime they produce. This is  story about a snail named Bailey. There is also a video at the end where you can hear a snail eat.

After reading that I'm all guilty about destroying land mollusks almost daily.  I really hate to kill stuff unless I'm going to eat it, but in the pnw they are relentless.

I've tried all sorts of things over the years - traps (just yech!), salt (bad idea for the soil), de, physical barriers, slug bait (which I don't use anymore) and am now trying to figure out a strategy for my new greenhouse to seal it up and eliminate eggs and critters that will invariably hatch from eggs in the soil.

Perhaps there could be a fungal option for keeping these critters at bay. What is happening with these critters? It sounds like you have a green house? They grubbin down on your goods?

I'll be erecting my greenhouse shortly - 2x4 framing, joins with simpson ties, with a nice ir thermal film.  8x12 or I'm waffling about making it a bit wider.

Gonna try to seal it up so that these foul little bastards cannot slither in.

But that's less than half the prob, the soil I bring in for the raised beds will be full of their eggs.  I try to destroy as I shovel but it's a fool's game.

They eat everything and I can do without the slime on my edibles.

I had a theory that they don't like traversing a sharp edge, so used some sheet metal scraps to surround plants...  Kinda worked.  Might have been the ZINC, most of the scrap I used was zinc plated.  I bought some zinc sheeting/ribbon to use as flashing and moss deterrent.  Will tuck a ribbon under each side of my cap shingles on the shop and I should never have to deal with slime on that roof again.

Anyhoo - to bring this back to the fungal - clean soil.  If I heat treated the soil in a layer spread out over/under black plastic, then maybe I could reinoculate it with good fungal stuff?  Anyone done this?  It would be a total bonus if I could start this project with a good chance of also producing some good fungus, eh?  What's that big ol' garden mushroom I've seen sold somewhere?

Wonderful!  I enjoyed Ms. Bonta’s article, and in adding Ms. Bailey’s heart warming experience, she provided further fascinating insight. The video was extremely nice. Thank you for providing the link. I am personally interested in identification of your snail, simply because I think it is cute.  I have plenty of snails within my own gardens.  Since nothing seems unusual due to their presence, I have not bothered to identify them.

Meanwhile, there are some slugs having appeared last year.  They average 4.5” long, while their underneath side averages 1” wide, and they are extremely fast movers for slugs.  They have an unusual pattern of black markings atop brownish-gray, a yellowish color as their underneath side, which is extraordinarily flat, although they are extremely thick.  Their underneath side resembles lemon rind texture.  If I try to pick them up bare-handed, they stick to my hand, and their slime is almost impossible to remove from my skin, even with hot soapy water and washcloth.  I no longer handle them, for that reason, and have yet to notice slime trails.  They are so sticky, that I can easily pick them up with a stick.  Something about them appears to be extremely intelligent.  When I see one, I typically see another one or more nearby, as if they are a small cattle herd.  I do not frequently see them, but since they are new, I have been meaning to take the time to identify them, and you helped.  This is the first link I accessed, and one of the replies regarding mushrooms may be of interest to you:

“Beatriz Moisset says

I read recently that some slugs and snails act as spore dispersers for mushrooms. Some of the spores survive the trip through their digestive tracts and are deposited at a distance from the mushroom. This is more ecologically important than it seems at first sight because many mushrooms form mycorrhizae, which are symbiotic with trees and other plants. The web of life is so exquisitely complex!”

http://www.beautifulwildlifegarden.com/feeling-sluggish.html#comments

I do believe it is good practice to frequently wash your hands, and particularly after playing with critters, even when they are your own, while I also consider it good practice to sterilize your shoes and additional gear, whenever traveling from one habitat to a new habitat.  My ski network abides by the same practice.  Whenever we beach one place, we clean the skis prior to departing, in order to prevent transferring plant life and more from one ecosystem into the next one (same principle as washing your hands, as well as properly preparing your food).  Speaking of which, I found the following :

Fry day, I just noticed your great photographs.  I like the last one best, and wonder what the purpose of that opening happens to be...odd looking.

Did you ever ID those wood lovers that were haunting the doc's dreams? I was thinking *possibly* a pale Armillaria gallica.

I started to toy with an idea of using two strips of electrified aluminum to keep slugs and snails out of potted plants. I tested it but never got around to making a setup. The slug reacted to electric current about the same that it does to salt.

Yes still un-IDed. Someone named Agaricales sensu lato(whatever that is), I doubt he was correct. I am pretty sure they are Acaricales though. The mystery lives on! I like it. The gills were very unique, I call them veiny. Here's a link to anyone interested. http://mushroomobserver.org/178208?q=2BmMz Thanks for input everyone.:hippie:

Agaricales sensu lato means it belongs in the order Agaricales in the broad sense. The nomination likely means that that was the most specific Byrain could say for certain so far.

Agaricales just means it's a gilled mushroom so I think he nailed it, albeit in the vaguest way possible

I would be a little concerned of the salt leaching up and screwing with the plant. I don't know if it actually would or not though.

Elevate them off of it. You could just put a no snails welcome sign on the pot.....maybe they will understand and back off.
