Turtle's Dream
    #20520319 -

Hey hey what's up people!?

I'm here to enlist your help for a moment in uncovering the origin of a quote I seem to be unable to find.

I remember (or at least, think I remember) reading a quote which suggested something along the lines of our collective existence being (potentially) nothing more than "a turtle's dream in outer space". Now, I cannot recall where I saw this and am convinced it was in some obscure book or perhaps some nonsensical pamphlet I decided to read. I think I have a problem with reading those sorts of things.

But anyways, yeah, I figured if there was any place on the internet where I might be able to find someone who has also seen the original version of this quote somewhere, this would be the place to ask.

Initially I thought it was from Leary or McKenna, perhaps Huxley, but an extensive probe into the mind of google has proved fruitless.

All I really know about it at the current moment is that it was referenced in two shows: It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (The Gang Broke Dee), and at some point in Adventure Time (I'm searching through my catalogue of AT episodes right now to find out exactly when and where, it could take a while though). I'm 60% certain that I'm 100% certain these are just references to the actual quote, however.

Then there's also the option that it was from one of the Native American creation myths, but I have my doubts. If anything, I think the quote I'm looking for was derived from one of these myths, but not directly from them as it was in relation to the philosophical concept that our perception of reality is not even close to what our existence really is.

Long story short, does anyone here recall coming across a quote suggesting that we could be nothing more than a turtle's dream in outer space? My philosophy professor claims he may have heard it somewhere but has absolutely no idea where.

I would be eternally grateful if someone could point me in the right direction, even if it means having to re-read some 800-page trilogy on the Illuminati attempting to Immanentize the Eschaton.

Thanks folks!

If the turtle is dreaming in outer space then he cannot be the source of the space in which he is dreaming. Logic 101, baby!

BTW, this guy eats space turtles as a snack.

It was in Stephen King's IT. IIRC the universe was something the turtle sicked up one day after it had a bad belly.

Bloody good book that was.

Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not.
