School Anxiety
    #20459805 -

Shit.

So I did something I wanted. I picked up a biology minor to compliment my psychology degree. I am a pretty quick learner, but I do lack some rudimentary concepts in chemistry and even biology, which makes me nervous about my course load.

Genetics
Anatomy and Physiology
Sensation and Perception
Statistics
Personality
2 labs

I don't doubt my ability to learn the material, but I do recognize that this semester will be very difficult and I need to find the best ways to complete these courses so that I can reach my goal of studying in a biology/psychology related field.

How do you handle your heavy academic work loads? What strategies do you employ?

Units? Is that the same as credits?

it's 17 credits.

That seems heavy XUL, although I speak from others experiences only.  I start my first week of university in 10 days with only 9 credits, 2 labs and an upgrading introduction to physics course (which is actually alot of work.)

However, through the past year and a half, when i've been working and doing highschool upgrading, the thing that stands out to me, is that i've neglected the other things in my life, to do school. I really regret this, letting my lifestyle decline ... and hope to get back into a healthy balance of lifestyle/schooling from here on out.

In order to prioritize run/bike/swim/diet I will be going to bed early, and waking early (5/530) and getting these things out of the way in the morning. I feel like it'll be a good exercise in discipline, and will add to my sense of wellbeing dramatically.

We move next week, and won't be hooking up cable at the other end. We've had no tv for the last week and already i find myself less distracted, for what its worth.

It might be worth taking a lighter load while you get used to these science based classes though... They may take significantly more effort than you are used to.

Lot's of those classes seem bio heavy, so I'm sure they'll cover some of the background material in the class. Not having a strong chemistry background will probably stress you out in classes like genetics. When I had high credit hour workloads, I liked to mix easier classes in with harder ones. It cuts down on the amount of learning you need to do. That course load looks manageable to me, but if it gets overwhelming and you feel like shit, just drop one of the classes you don't need(assuming you can take the hit and graduate on time).

P.S.
I'm pretty sure nobody cares about minors. I've never had anybody ask about mine, and I've heard the same story from everyone I've asked.

Attend all classes and actually pay attention.
Do all the assignments and recommended reading. Even if they don't check/ mark them, do them as it'll help cement the learning.
Do reading around the subjects to get a firm grasp of the material. Some other bits of info can help things click sometimes.

Well, I changed my mind!

I attended the first classes and a lab for the biology classes. It seemed achievable, but at what price I wondered. It was only the first day and I new I had to confine myself to my room to study biology. I thought about the future and realized that I don't want to be confined to my room for another semester.

Instead I stuck with my psychology courses and a mathematics course. This should be an easy semester.

One of the biggest turn offs for me was the course load. As some of you had said, I would of needed to sacrifice my social life in turn for school.

Instead I am taking an easy semester, attending baseball outings with my friends, and getting ready to graduate.

Shit's good.

a&p sucks shit. statistics is easy. idk about genetics but the other two seem psych related so it shouldn't be too bad. a&p sucks shit though.

Genetics isn't too bad. A&P is a bitch, stats is easy.... don't worry too much. Just make sure to study, it's just a lot of memorization really, not much else.

It's been a long time since I've shouldered an academic workload (or any real workload for that matter), but in the past I've coped with it simply by choosing to enjoy the process of soaking up information.  I also spent considerable thought reflecting on the value of science and the marvellous insights its brilliant practitioners have generously transmitted to the rest of the world.  The more you enjoy what you're doing, the easier it will be, even when it's challenging.

Check out the youtube channels KhanAcademy and FreelanceTeacher. For a 1 or 2 day heavy study session, amphetamines are boss. A more sustainable study aid is rhodiola rosea + phosphatidyl serine. Modafinil is good too. By far the best way to learn my opinion is to get a good textbook for each subject. For chemistry I recomend "CHEMISTRY by Brown, LeMay, Bursten". For Biology "Biological Science by Scott Freeman". Theres no better way than this, lectures in my opinion are crap, they only give you little pieces of the puzzle, without the big picture they're meaningless. Hardcopies are so much easier to read than ebooks. Unless you have one of those tablets that you can carry around with you.

Get a scribd.com account. I guarantee its worth every penny. You can find books and docs on everything on it. Every once in a while when you have time, try taking some kratom and doing a book reading session to get your knowledge up to date. I wish I'd known what I know now when I started my chemistry degree. Woulda been so much easier. I got the degree now but I went about it in a dodgy way.

When I say once in a while for the amphetamines and kratom or any other drugs which make learning more interesting I mean it. Theres a serious danger if you do it multiple days in a row. What happened with me is I started feeling like I can't study without the drugs. Choose kratom over amphetamines. Phenibut is another good one. And try out hypnosis. Go to a hypnotherapist and ask him to make learning more fun and enjoyable for you.

Maths is probably my weakest area but I found relatively statistics easy. KhanAcademy is brilliant for learning rudimentary concepts on all that. He explains it in such an easy to grasp way. They cover everything on that channel too, basic biology, chemistry, physics etc. The key is finding aspects that interest you. What interested me greatly about genetics is the way they can introduce bioluminescent jellyfish genes into bacteria and even animals to make them glow in the dark. The implications. Its so trippy.

PM me and send me your skype details. If you ever need some tutoring on chemistry, I'll sort you out for free. I know the basics of biology too. If this is your first year, I can probably help you out with statistics as well.

And BTW labs are a joke. Writing up the reports can be tricky. I have all my old lab reports, I'll send you some of them so you can use them as templates. I like helping people any time I can, so I'll be happy to help you get the ball rolling. Right now would be a good time if you can skype me.

OP, are you studying things that are closely enough related to your real passion? If so, you'll find all the energy you need. If not, no organizing system will allow you to thrive doing things you don't like or don't care about.

If you do like, some minor points (as this is all you need):
- Study at the library, not at home. Focused bursts of study, with good refreshing breaks (walk outside in park, etc, change locations, close eyes)
- Sports in the morning, energizes you for the full day ahead.
- Good food and sleep. Turn the comp on in the evening at your own peril
- Pussy. Skin contact. Massages. Hugs. Kisses. Keep your electric charge running strong. Try to live on books alone, you'll just fizzle out, and more importantly, you'll be a shitty shrink providing a shit model to others.

Good vibes OP, follow your joy and enthusiasm, wherever it leads :alientransform:
