Has any one used craiglst to buy a car!? EDITED I got the jeep!

So I have been car shopping for awhile. Man dealerships are just so fail over 75 percent of the time. Way over priced and in my price range need a fair amount of work and have lots of rust.

They call them stealerships for a reason

I have found some older lower mileage for age but decent deals on craigslist.
So have any of you done this. Im a bet sketched out about it.


I know more then some about cars can do basic maintenance cant fuck with the transmission.

I bought a car off craigslist and I got scammed hard.  I still don't own a car and it's been almost a few years now.  But I financed a motorcycle that was under 2.3K for less than $75 a month, so I'm happy.

Craigslist buyers, sellers and ad posters are sketchy people for a reason.

You got scammed twice. I will be pay cash and have more then 2k and if I was go the stealership route I would get at least 3k for my current vehicle.


I am not financing.

Also moped is not an option here, Winter is coming.

I got scammed more than twice but it wasn't from the dealership.  I wanted to build more credit and I'm doing so, so blow me.  1100ccs isn't a moped and OP doesn't know dick about cars, so he has to ask the internet.

You should take pity on whoever you buy from, don't haggle the price and feel enticed to buy it the moment you see it.  Hope all goes well in your search OP, cuz fuck you man.  I don't have a .gif to show you what I'm really feeling.

Maybe you'll get lucky and somebody will just rob you up front.  Or alternatively, you get lured into a house and murdered so that they can use your corpse as the husband's and claim insurance money on the house and his death.

That's how most people sell cars, imo it's not anymore sketch than buying a car off autotrader or something. I'd just avoid used car lots posting on craigslist, I bought from one and the guy was hiding a lot of problems it had (actually made an effort to conceal them). Just use your best judgement when it comes to buying from someone who seems honest and read up onto things to look for when buying a used car.

Also when you test drive it... take it for a long test drive before you hand over the money. Like a half hour. If the check engine light is on it can be turned off by disconnecting the battery and it can take 15+ minutes of driving for it to comeback on

92 honda civic for 2k lasted 2 years and 35k miles (had 156k at end). I took shit care of it.

The car I currently have was purchased from craigslist.

But my Dad is a dealer, and knows his stuff. The car had some faults that were not
presented by the seller, all is fixed & working now. So if it wasn't for my daddies help, I would have been having frequent problems with it.

Unless you know what you're cars, I'd be weary.

I've bought three cars on CL.  All served me well.  And I got pretty good deals too. I most recently bought a Honda Element for about 4k below retail blue book, and we have enjoyed the hell out of it.  :shrug:  The other two cars I drove for three years and then turned around and sold them for what I originally paid.  Negotiation is your friend on craigslist, and cash talks.

There are lots of videos on what to look for in a used car on youtube that can help you detect potential issues.

My advice:

1. If someone wont show you a car at there own home, walk.  I understand that people will have there own reasons for not wanting a stranger at there home, but I don't care, not when thousands of dollars are at stake.
2. Do a lot of research on the car your looking at to determine if its generally a reliable make and model, be sure to cross reference the specific engine and transmission combo as some makes have defects that develop only in certain trim levels.
3. Research the scheduled maintenance for the specific vehicle you intend to buy so you can determine if it has already had expensive but necessary work done on it like the timing belt.  This will at least allow you to anticipate work that may need to be done on the car right after you buy it.
4. Look on youtube for videos that show you what to look for in a used car.  Look for unevenness in body seams, slight differences in paint color when you compare two body panels, look under the seats for rusted springs (potential sign of flood damage) ect...  Again, look on youtube.
5. Use your instincts, and never hesitate to walk away if it doesn't feel right.  A car fax is a good idea, and some mechanics will do a vehicle inspection for under $100 if you don't think your up to it.

I have only bought cars off of craigslist for the past decade or more.  I know my way around a car so paying cash via craigslist is way better than a guarantee rip off at a dealership.

The con to craigslist is that it takes more time and energy to get your car.  Many people want way to much for their car because they cant admit that they owe more than its worth or that its just not as good as they think.  You have to be quick, because the good deals go quick leaving the crap deals to hang around for days/weeks taking up most the space on craigslist.

My car just got totaled and I'm expecting an insurance payout soon.  I might go to a dealership and pay the extra just to save time since I'm really busy at work and with moving.  Its a cost you pay for convenience.

I'm selling a car on Craigslist as we speak. Its a great car, but I need the money fast so its going for a few thousand less than I could get for it. I've had friends get really good deals too. Just make sure you check everything before you buy it and don't buy the first one you look at

buying used cars from dealerships is just as bad if not worse then craigslist because they figure since they're in a suit they can spoon feed you bullshit.

use the internet
see what cars have 1 star reviews under 10%
see what the people dont like

and buy those ones

I've sold a couple of cars and a boat on craigslist before. I was very up front about the problems they had and made sure they understood them. I'd just say do it on a person by person basis. Go check out the car and the person, see if they let you know what problems it has or if they just try to play them off and go from there.

Same, I sold a car on craiglist. It isn't that sketchy really... just use your judgement as best as you can and don't be afraid to haggle a bit if you think it is unfair.

I got a 15 year old car in 2008 that lasted me to the better half of 2012, after driving the crap out of if for like a grand, the milage is most important. Make sure the owner knows about oil/coolant changes. That's really all there is to it
