UK Lib Cap Status?
    #2046636 -

Alright everyone,
After a disappointing pick yesterday morning, I wondering how everyone else is doing this year?

Has anyone been picking recently in the UK, if so, any luck? Also, does anyone know whats happening with the season this year, I heard it has become 'late' with the majority of them appearing later than usual?

Cheers.

Greenfields.

I got 200 in a couple of hours last week from my patches, but that was still a decrease cos before I'd found about 600 in the same sorta time! This year has been the best I've seen, so much better than last year it's unreal.

I think it's virtually over where I stay cos we had the first frosts start of the week, and that's wiped most mushrooms in general. You see the decrease of all types when just walking around.

Hi,
Ah well, thats a shame - do you think it would be worth going if we had a night of rain and cloud cover?

I might try and grab a few more from friends, scrape together my one trip of the season!

Cheers.

They are everywhere just not in as many numbers as usual due to the driest year on record and still no relavent rain for the forseeable future.

mr_kite,

Frost doesn't inhibit the growth of Liberty Caps, their has been many years when Liberty Caps haven't even shown up untill the first frosts. They even fruit well into the next year. In my experience it's like the first frost(s) gives them the incling that winter is upon us so they fruit like crazy to reproduce as quickly as possible.

Hi all,
Cheers for your responses, appreciated. I missed out on a pick this morning due to last nights carnage  but my friends returned with a harvest of about 100. I'm planning a hunt tommorow as my area has experienced a fair amount of rain and isn't due any frost tonight!!

Also, when looking for libs I often find a similar type of mushroom. It's got a grey/purple cap shaped like a witches hat (slight nipple), greyish/white gills and a slightly thicker stem than liberty caps. I've heard claims that these are in fact magic, could anyone confirm/deny this and identify them?

I picked roughly 300 P. semilanceata last thursday in the Peak District in a couple of hours.

It's not the worst season I've seen in my 15 years of picking !

Stop complaining and start cultivating people !

Alright,
Well after a two hour stroll around some hopeful fields I've been persuaded that season is over. BioTek, I might well take your advice and get some (more  ) cultivation on the go!

Hi again,
Yeh, after hearing about some friends success on the day after my attempt it seems your right. I was strolling around grassy, slightly hilly meadows that have had cows grazing them. Care to share any tips on what makes a good field in the Shropshire area?
