Ganoderma applanatum grow.

Ganoderma applanatum primordia forming in a jar of wild birdseed. Using the same technique as the reishi in my signature. With reduced air flow in the chamber to see if I can induce antlers to form in an otherwise antler less species. cloned from an old fruit early this spring. It has decent speed on agar, on grain it performs well, but has poor recover ability. It took several days to see any signs of good growth after being shaken. but once it did recover its speed was more in line with other Ganoderma species. I am interested to see how this grows. Any input is welcome.

:awesomenod: Honestly I have no idea how this is going to turn out. I reduced air flow wayy down because applanatum goes straight to conk in the wild and I am curious if I can get some cool antlers or something but really I don't know. Pretty unpredictable at this point. Will be interesting. It is growing in my fruiting chamber along side 2 resinaceum strains, 1 curtisii, a jar of Microporus affinis and some blue oysters. Seems like it gets a little wet in there for the oysters, but the other species are loving it.

have: blue, brown, pink, yellow, elm, king oyster, reishi, nameko, black poplar, shaggy mane, PESA

want: ABM, ganoderma spp., straw mushroom, exotic pleurotus species, ethno cuttings/seeds.

It's as easy as any other Ganoderma. Its speed seems debateable, horrible recovery time. I thought for sure it was going to take months to colonize with how slow it started out. when it is first inoculated/ or shaken it's growth is very slow, after a couple of days it starts to pick up speed but still has a whispy appearance to it, then it gets a little faster and it starts to fill in like the other Ganodermas and get that nice thick white growth. It ultimately caught up with the others in time to be introduced to the fruiting chamber at the same time.

Its taken a little while for it to show primordia, It's speeding up a bit now. I think that it grows a little slower than other species but not nearly as slow as I was expecting.

I have always read that cultivation of G.applanatum would be unfruitful because it is a perennial, and would take years to grow to any decent size. This is untrue though, I don't know if anyones paid attention but the first year growth of G.applanatum is usually its biggest (fastest). The following years just add a new pore surface and maybe an inch or two on the edge. This one below has been growing off this log for a little over a month now. It is growing back from where I ripped the conk off that I actually cloned this culture from.

This is the same jar as the previous photo. It is going painfully slow.



This is a second strain from about 100 miles away from the first one. It was far slower colonizing so it is a week or so behind and didn't get introduced to fruiting conditions until just about a week ago. It seems to be forming one main primordia instead of multiple smaller ones.

Oh wow looking at the photos in comparison the G.applanatum has really consumed the grain. It is quite a bit lower than it started out. Might be part of the reason it seems like it's taking so long for it to reach the top of the jar.

Pretty cool, it's really eating it up!  It would be really interesting to see how it did in a bottle type grow, with only one small place to fruit from and a larger substrate.

The first strain seems to have stalled out, not really sure whats going on with it. But the second strain, with that big blob is doing quite well, the blob is growing, and growing. Nothing resembling any sort of recognizable fruitbody yet, but as long as it doesn't stall out I am optimistic it will start doing something. Sure is taking its time compared to other Ganoderma, it seems the others are a bit faster indoors, this is about the same speed as outside I think.

Here is the applanatum tonight, I hope that it will soon start forming a true fruitbody.At this point its sort of a giant blobby marshmallow looking thing.

That's water, it seems to have no detrimental effects to it so I am not bothering to drain it. My fruiting chamber fills with mist and it condenses, some mushrooms like this more than others, Ganodermas so far have seemed to love it. Except curtisii, I gave up and stuck that one outside in the garden :shrug:

Part of the reason that I am not draining it is I noticed the applanatum seems to form a red skin in response to standing water, and that's pretty nifty and out of character for that species.

I tried to grow G. applanatum a few years back. Unfortunately, I never got any conks, only what looked like resupinate fruiting body formation.

so i have been trying to find these photos ever since i saw this thread, and i finally did.
one of my buddies does weird art projects with ganodermas, mainly Tsugae.  he was at telluride if anyone was there, he made the cordyceps hat that john holiday was wearing, and also made some strange stuffed bunny rabbits inoculated with tsugae.
he did applanatum in a tub with a mirror in middle (don't ask, he's an artist, u know?)
