i was wondering how long could cubensis mycelium in rye could be kept healthy (fruiting, when demanded or for bulk spawning), under an average temperature of ~20 Celsius, perhaps varying 3 or 4 degrees during the day period, shaking whenever it starts to clump (keeping loose and airy)...

My knowledge is limited to only Rye grain but I've seen pints and quart jars last for at least 3-4 months. You can usually tell how your jars are doing by the yellow piss. The more piss the more its consumed...etc...As far as clumping, it isn't a problem when spawning, you just have to break it up with your hands or some other tool.

A PF cake lasted 3 weeks in the incubator before fruiting, and it is doing quite well

I have spawned 6 mo jars successfully. There are many factors involved in determining the fitness of an old jar.
I had a 6 mo apple in my closet that had only shriveled from dehydration, inside it was fresh and tastey.
BTW...my agar work will be gaining some headway very soon! I have some spores that will have a nice home very soon. I'll let you know what happens.

thanks everybody for the inputs! i've seen PF jars last months this way!
i really appreciated the yellow piss hint! i've checked out i have actually a little over 6 month (neglected as hell) jars stored but there's no sign of bacterial contamination so i thought i could use some (i was worried about the piss).
thanks Josh for the good info and for hosting my babies up there! i'm sure they're well laid back. just give it a good load on the gentamicyn!

good air exchange on the jars is a good thing IME if you want to keep them for a while, seems to prevent the "piss" to a certain extent. better to use slightly dried out spawn, than spawn swimming in its own "piss", as the "piss" gives a huge welcoming hand to any stray bacts IME.

Why is it gross? People drink wine that is aged far past six months. Cheese is aged too.
I cut a slice out and ate some fresh material from the middle. In a blind taste test, I doubt you would have been able to tell this one from a new apple.

yeah josh, did you leave the apple for the elfs or something?
i thought that was a little lazy of you too! =)
but it seems there's people who will always be able to grow shrooms in places where others would grow mostly trichodermas and colorful molds.
dried apples make good tea.

this is not bad. ir kept cool, dry and free of molds an apple can stay good for 6 months. seagoing ships used to take them by the barrel for vitamins for taht verry reason. in general, apples could be kept crisp for 3 months and after they shriveled they only needed to be kept alive and contam free and they could last for longer. it is when they contaminate or consume all thier nutrients that they are no longer good.

The apple was left at the bottom of my closet in a paper bag by accident. I was amazed that it had not molded when I saw it.
