Yes, it is very smart indeed. Grow in every possible direction where there is any trace of nutrients. Get it to gro in only the most direct path and I'll be impressed

I agree with the MeanOldMan. That mycelium looks to be about as smart as water.

Actually Paul Stamets has shown fungi to grow in the shortest path to oat flakes at the end of a maze on a plate of agar.Ive read the article on the web from various news places. It should still be around somewhere.

By showing that through experience, the mycelium knows where to grow to get to a better food source. I thought it was obvious...

It hasn't shown that at all.

The myc pic shows it growing in all directions, not a directed path.

The slime mold experiment is irrelevent to myc, "look what my dog learned, that proves my cat is smart"

Diffusion of nutrients from the prize (trail of breadcrumbs to follow) is the reason why someone could "show" the myc following a maze. If the whole maze has equal nutritional value, the myc will grow equally in all available directions, completely unaware of any prize that awaits it.

He's going to REPEAT the process, and if the mycelium grows in the right direction that time, THEN it has learned something.

This is just a novelty grow. Funny idea though and it is still a true experiment.

In psyc. 101 experiments, we used a "T" shaped maze with Planaria.

I don't think we should make it any more difficult for P. cubensis than we do a flatworm......

i'd love to be proved wrong, but i believe mycelium to be stupid as they come. it just grows wherever it finds food. going down every possible avenue then stopping when it runs out of food. now if you could show that once it finds a big prize, all other eating zones cease looking, THAT would show the hypahe were communicating. but i won't wait up.

this experiment is typical of rodgerrabbit's immense imagination and creativity - who could forgt his shroom bra, shroom bible, and shroom log pics, to name but a few. c'mon rodger, let's have an encore!

and the link referred to above by stamets is still bugging me for a review.....
