looking for some insights on buddhism
    #20057080 -

is the act of pursuing or even producing something just ego-driven? is, for example, painting, playing music.. or having a romantic relationship and interest in studying math something that the buddhist philosophy sees as "futile" to a meaningful life?

should one just be still and observe to a degree that it is closed to activity and interaction? something like a hermit?

any thoughts?

There is nothing about any of those activities that is inherently ego-driven.  What Buddhism would say is that there is simply no such thing as the "self" that is doing those things.

No.  They just are.  They are pure movement, pure arisings that are neither good nor bad in themselves.  When enlightenment is achieved, at least according to Mahayana Buddhism, one sees that nirvana is samsara and samsara is nirvana.  One continues to inhabit the same world of form, but sees the emptiness (sunyata) that lies behind all forms.

futility is an attitude
buddhism is not about adopting an attitude, it is about stepping outside of your attitudes and being even minded about what is happening.

The Buddha has no expectation that everyone would have a desire to get off the karmic wheel, and he even spoke about the differences between the common person and the monk and how they could both progress in life. He spoke of hard work and commitment to family and a focus on the heart for the commoners.

So yes, it's ego driven but it's not just ego driven. The path we are on is the correct path, fortunate or unfortunate, and it's not all black and white commoner/monk. Should one just be still and observe...?

It depends on what one wants to do.

why there is reality and patterned, law-like consistency at all, rather than noise or non-reality is not a question physics answers. It's a question physics presupposes an answer to in order to provide other answers.

thank you everyone, you've all been really helpful.
i don't have much knowledge about the buddhist philosophy and was quite confused thinking about how can one experience something or interact with someone if samsara is just an illusion and all actions are motivated by the ego or the need for sensation.
at that moment it seemed like the ultimate answer (in buddhism) would be for people to become monks..

any good books you'd recommend so i can dig deeper?
also hinduism too seems to have pretty strong points and interesting stories, i feel somewhat compelled to this too..

if you're going to look into hinduism then i'd suggest advaita vedanta, that's if you want the strong points, but not so much if you want interesting stories

yes, i've been taking a look at the advaita vedanta. i'm interested in both the "denser" philosophical aspects of it and the incredible tales. the bhagavad gita seems pretty spot on too!

Futile is a life without mindfulness. Restraining the mind to certain activities/amount of food/amount of sleep etc., is useful because the unenlightened mind is addicted to pleasure. This attachment to what is good and aversion to what is "bad" is the main fuel that keeps you and I in the cycle of birth and death. These activities you mentioned are not inherently bad, but to a serious practitioner (such as monk) they are avoided.

Forget all that crap. It is a silly myth designed to make you feel guilty about how you are as a unique person. The absurdity of people sitting like stone buddahs all eyes closed in a world full of magic and play and form etc is insanity. Look at children at play---though not many do nowadays which is tragic because of the materialist fuekced up myth with its satanic gadgets which capture the souls of more and more children and suck their imagination so they find this mysterious magical world of trees and streams and hills and air and clouds boring. No, they gotta be staring at a screen
But PLAY. An animal know what it is like to sit and contemplate. Ever seen horses under the shade of a tree on a hot day? They're amazing, still, eyes closed, but they aren't making a freakin religion out of it. They are just being still and when the mood takes them they go back to easting grass and galloping about having fun.

There is not historical evidence OF a chap called Siddharta Gautama. However, as is usual with mythological stories ther are cryptic references as to what is REALLY being pointed at, usually only for the initiated. And this is consciousness changing substances. For example, checkout Mike Crowley talk below

the buddhist tales tell us that in an attempt to seek enlightenment and inner peace siddharta restrained himself from all things and put his own body under extremely painful circumstances (food deprivation, sleeping over nails and so on).

after years without getting to the bottom of his questions siddharta realized that what he was looking for wasn't achieved by forcing suffering upon himself but rather having some control and acceptance about it. he then became buddha.

no deprivation but a powerful control over the mind.
at least that's my perception of it.
