Woo Hoo! Biked over 100 km in one day, for the first time ever! * 1
    #20022166 -

I love the Netherlands. I have not biked or owned a bike for over 20 years before coming here. Literally my last bike before that was when I was 5, then nothing. Came here, started using bikes again (due to the awesome lanes and sweet flatness) and now I'm happy to say I just biked over 100 km, packed with all my stuff.

8 euro bike that I got from a junkie, one brake working (somewhat) and my huge suitcase roller thingy strapped to myself with the bike chain, probably looked like a hobo moving

This is the route, and I got to see plenty of nature, birds, horses, foresty forests, fellow bikers and helpful Dutch people helping me find my way. Great experience, recommended

The way I started was at first in-city biking, then Leiden to The Hague (20 km) then Leiden to Amsterdam (42 km) then Amsterdam to Utrecht (40 km). I didn't know for sure that I could make the 100, but hell yeah, it worked! Next, the Moon

I know it's no world record or anything, but given the amount of depressed inactive people posting in this section, I figured it's a good time to celebrate small victories

Awesome! But if you're not used to all the exercise, you're going to be rather sore and stiff tomorrow when you wake up.

Actually I saw that coming, so I made sure I was well rested, and listened very well to my body, gave it breaks when it asked for em, paced myself, and am now happy to say that I have absolutely zero sore muscles (the next morning).

I did do some running and biking around before, moderately, so I wasn't jumping the horse here. Very good way to get around and detox and stuff.

Now the friend that I am staying with, actually pimped up my bike properly. I now have breaks that work (and don't sound like a train, grinding metal on metal ), new pedals, bike bell, proper cargo holder in the back for my luggage, it's a beauty to behold

I'll very likely get lost and be pretty far off from my planned route but yeah, happy waiting

Congrats - it's rewarding getting out for the day and doing something other people find difficult to comprehend. By all means, 100km's isn't extraordinary, but it is out of reach of many/most people.

Unpleasant on a beater bike IMO. (I'm a bit of a bike snob.)

I highly recommend doing some overnight and/or extended trips on your bike sometime, if you have the opportunity - sounds like bike touring would be right up your alley.

I am interested in doing some bike packing (offroad touring) once i return to my hometown (surrounded by secluded wilderness) at the end of the summer.

I agree, bike touring and night riding sounds like a lot of fun, now all I have to do is find the right biking buddies or a nice bike trippy girl to ride with, and I'm off

Below is a photo of me arriving that night, posted to show the awesome quality of the bike (not ) and the irresponsible amount of luggage I was hauling.

Notice the black cable going around the big bag, that is actually the bike chain strapping the bag to myself, I locked it across my chest, so that it wouldn't fall off to the left or right (which it tended to do, a lot). The contraption was reasonably secure, but meant that each time I wanted to embark/disembark I had to use the keys, take off the first backpack, etc. I was extremely proud of myself for coming up with this kind of in-the-field gremlin engineering

Very nice route! You could do that again in fall and look for liberty caps along the way :awesome:

Don't tell me you have those little plastic doohickeys on your spokes that go up and down and make a cool ass noise as you ride!  Or do they light up?  Either way

And that is definitely something worthy of celebrating.

I love putting 50+ miles in on the bike on a beautiful day out in the country where you don't have to worry about traffic or anything else.  It gives me such a free feeling, and it doesn't hurt stopping for breaks at a few wineries on the route for a glass or two at each place.  If we didn't have shitty weather today I would be out there now, but will have to wait until some better weather.

That my good man, is exactly what the plan is for fall, assuming I'm still here

Well this is an 8 Euro bike that I bought from a junkie, and it came together with the colorful hippie thingies on it. They do make some sound as they go up and down, I myself like it and find it meditative, others may differ, I don't know

On the back wheel there's a green diamond shaped thingy that lights up and as the wheel spins, it makes a green light circle. I've been told (when tripping) that it's nice for fellow trippers to focus on as they ride along. I suspect it leaves some bitching trails or something

I got really excited/jealous when I saw them because I haven't seen them in ~15 years.  We used to have them on our bikes when we were kids, but haven't seen them since.  Same with the light things.  You got a hell of a bike for 8 euros :hi5:

I tried a google search to find them  :dancer:

Aww man, you totally made my evening with this post, I am now extra proud of my little space bike

In the meantime my mate and I installed a cargo platform on the back and also a big ass basket crate thingy, and so now it fits a ton of stuff on the back. I will probably be able to just park it somewhere and straight up use the cargo area as a painting easel. It's developing to be quite the massive DIY contraption

Oh and it seems dealextreme / dx.com seels those valve lights as well. Apparently I have something like this.
