Sydney Australia - Macrolepiota/ Lepiota/ Amanita?

These keep fruiting near me. I'm familiar with Macrolepiota procera in the UK - these seemed a bit like the familiar parasols to me, but the ring is fixed and they're smaller. Checked that it wasn't Chlorophyllum molybdites, and the spore print is definitely white, not green (sorry, no photo). Any ideas? I checked this guy's blog, also Sydney-based, and he didn't get a positive ID.











Habitat:
Wood chips, local public garden bed

Gills:
White, free/emarginate, fairly closely spaced.

Stem:
~60mm, ring around half way down

Cap:
60-115mm, white with brown scales, ovate to flat

Spore print color:
White

Bruising:
orange/red

Smell:
Mushroomy, very similar to Macrolepiota procera

I'd call these Chlorophyllum brunneum

I'm 99% sure these are what I id'd them as. They're certainly not a poisonous or toxic mushroom, even if the species isn't correct, it's an edible Chlorophyllum.

I've eaten these in the past with no problems and would encourage others to test their edibility. There's a silly rumour that Australian Edible mushrooms aren't edible and cause gastric problems. I've yet to experience this and I think this rumour is just parroted by authors to prevent them from being sued or end up on the news, or something.

If you choose to try these, only try a small portion first, wait a day to see if any problems present themselves. If none occur than it's safe to say your body can digest them without further complications. If you do try them please report back with your results.

I've heard it stated in a subtly different way, but essentially meaning the same. Several authors I have talked to stress the point that Australian mushrooms that look like edible European mushrooms are often different species of the same genus, and their edibility is unknown. I can't say that I disagree with this, but many species ARE the same, and many species ARE eaten here in Australia regularly and safely, regardless of the fine points of taxonomy.

Great - the ones I picked are gone, but I'll check the patch, have a taste if there are any youngish ones left, and let you know. They've been fruiting for ages and they're a good size, so it would be a good patch to have a minute's walk from home!

I am a bit more cautious here as everyone warns about how understudied Australian fungi are. This site has already hugely increased my confidence to get exploring and picking, as the books I could get my hands on are not comprehensive at all, and don't include many non-native mushrooms.

Anyway, the patch of these is old now with nothing new coming through, so I'll give it a go next time I see them. Plenty of woodchip beds around, so eager to see if I can find subs locally when it gets colder.
