Mushroom identification plz (north coast nsw, australia)
    #3998829 - 04/01/05 06:34 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Hi everyone,

I need to get some mushrooms identified as im a novice picker. All these where picked around north coast NSW (australia) after we recieved 4 days of rain and cold weather. All where on manacured lawns beside the road. I have tried to below accurately describe the mushrooms as per the identifying guide, but im having a hard time due to the lack of 'heres a picture to the description' information in the glossary refered to in the faq.

Anyway... onto the picks. (note - my camera is not the best

Pick 1

The 4 pictures above are all the same mushrooms (the light varies alot in each pic).
Habitat - found next to cow paddock on a manacured lawn. I believe next to pine trees.
Gills - They look more like a lots of tiny(.5mm) holes than really alot of gills. They are a dark yellow/brown.
Cap/Stem - Largest cap is 10cm, smallest is 4cm. Stems between 3-5cm
Characteristic of Stem - Yellow, wavy, moist, looks to be solid, thick.
Characteristic of Cap - Ranges from a dark brown to orange/yellow. If i break the cap open its yellowish inside.
Spore print - brown/yellow
Bruising - Doesnt seem to bruise much if at all
Scent - Stronger than the others i picked, but i cant really describe it.

Pick 2 (cube?)

The 2 pictures above are i believe a cube.
Habitat - found on a very well manacured lawn next to a nusery.
Gills - White reaching from centre to the edges.
Cap/Stem - Cap is 4cm. Stem is 4 cm
Characteristic of Stem - White, hollow. Dark brown line where the top use to connect onto it.
Characteristic of Cap - Gold/yellow to a light brown in middle. round at top.
Spore print - No spore print on white paper.
Bruising - Doesnt bruise any specific colour.
Scent - Smells like mushroom. Sorry best i can do

Pick 3

The 2 pictures above are from right next to the road, i.e. within .2metres to 3 metres off it. There was _alot_ of them. Also found near(20metres) the next pick(below)
Habitat - found on a very well manacured lawn near the road next to some normal looking trees.
Gills - Dark brown reaching from centre to the edges.
Cap/Stem - Caps are between 1cm to 3cm. Stem are 2-3cm.
Characteristic of Stem - White/brown.
Characteristic of Cap - Brown near the middle, thinner then the last pick(above). Fairly flat to concave on the young ones.
Spore print - Brownish, but then again the gills are still moist so it more looks like dirt.
Bruising - Doesnt bruise any specific colour.
Scent - Smells like mushroom.

Pick 4 (more cubes?)

These next two (above) where found next to a well manacured lawn not near any trees. I have put them both together for a comparison.
Basically the both look very similar. The bigger one looks identical to the pick2 mushroom. The smaller one looks more like the pick3 mushrooms but much larger.
Are these two mushrooms the same? BOth have a brown tint in the middle, and one just looks darker than the other.

Pick 5

This one looks like a cross between the last 2... its in between on all accounts. The gills are a light brown. The top has a deep brown centre, with light brown outside. Sporeprints chocolate brown.

Pick 6

Ok, these ones are the last i picked. I see quite a few of them and when I first picked one ages ago, I didnt eat it cause I thought it was a poisonous type, and I didn't have access to a digital camera at the time.
They look different to all the previous mushrooms pics. I don't think they are the same type as the previous pics, but they may just be really young?
Anyway,
Habitat - found next to a horse paddock in grass.
Gills - I cant see the gills as the tops are closed in around the stem.
Cap/Stem - Caps are between 2cm to 3cm.
Characteristic of Stem - White
Characteristic of Cap - spherical, white, with a tinge of brown.
Spore print - No spore print.
Bruising - Doesnt bruise any specific colour.
Scent - Smells like mushroom.

Pick 7
No pictures, just a quick description.
Basically they look like a big flat white mushroom, some are _huge_ with a 30cm cap. I've seen them living next to the roadside for a few months now. Nobody picks them.
I ran out of room in uploading pics, so I cant upload a pic for this one :/ Plus I didnt actually pick any of them as they seem to be too large to be anything like what a cube or other aussie physcoactive looks like.

Thank you for anyone who answers my post.

Regards,
metalslaw

I cant give you an ID but i can say Pic 2 which you suspected to be a cube is not a cube. Wait til someone more experienced identifies the others.

None are cubes, Cubes directly grow from cow shit. I think i see some poisonus ones so don't eat any of these. But non of them are active Im pretty sure of that.

No active mushrooms here.
1. Boletus - Could be nice eating.
2. Amanita - Did it have a volva?
3. Stropharia.
4 & 5. Agaricus.
6. Lepiota - very early should grow tall and large.

Have a look at Bluemeanies site for some good Australian species, http://www.shaman-australis.com/%7Ebluemeanie/index.html

Thks all,

I threw them all out yesterday after chatting in a mushroom chat room.

I also read that blue meanies season doesn't kick off til its really cold (bout a month and a bit away), and they grow out of bark. And cubes really need cow shit to grow.

I have a local hunting ground, but its well known by the locals :/ Lets just hope i'm first in after the cold rains.

Thank you to all that replied, esp magicrooms, as now i know what not to look for

Regards,
metalslaw
