Reishi fruiting on Liquid culture!

I have this bad habit of forgetting things. I made a whole jar of Reishi LC and just flat out forgot about it. Until today, I found a random jar of LC and noticed it had some funky growth in there. At first I thought maybe there was some weird contamination, but when I looked closer I realized it was Reishi and that it was pushing out a fruit.

Simple honey LC about a spoonful of honey in aprox.100 ml water. Inoculated with an agar wedge.







I took the top off and threw it in a fruiting chamber, it would be pretty cool to get like a mini conk out of it or something, but I doubt that will happen.

Kind of funny to me how much we worry and obsess over our cultures and spawn and bulk projects, and then something like this happens to remind us all how resilient and tenacious these organisms can be.  :-)

awesome. now let's do that with a tub. I've seen photos of the japanese growing red rieshi where they have a whole room/area with logs submerged with reishi on them. it could be the way they moisturize the log, or something else, I do not know, but I found it interesting to see the picture.

It might be pretty hard to get that much sterile liquid culture though. I think though, that if I tried doing it on purpose I might be able to get decent results from a jar of liquid culture. Something like feeding it more nutrients along the way. The reishi forms a thick tough barrier on the surface of the LC so no contaminants will make it in if the top if left open. Theoretically one could inject through this layer and keep the beast fed.

Honestly I wouldn't have thought it was possible, I thought reishi would need something a bit more substantial than sugar water. Though by the time it fruited it had evaporated down quite far, increasing the amount of nutrient per volume in the LC. So its more like super LC underneath that mycelial mat.

I believe honey also contains some proteins and other compounds other than just sugar. Nonetheless absolutely amazing. I had a oyster LC that pinned once. It formed that same mat you mentioned. Never developed color and got big though...

That's strange, I'm not sure how you got it to do that, I have a pretty old jar of reishi LC and it hasn't done that at all.  Maybe because I refrigerated mine?
Cordyceps militaris on the other hand does it quite readily, forms a scoby within a few days like kombucha.  Shake it down and it forms another one right away.

It formed pretty quickly within a few weeks. It resisted all attempts to break it up too. Placed it on a stir plate for hours on end trying to break it up. Eventually gave up.  Probably why I ended up forgetting about it.

No more growth after putting it in the fruiting chamber. I think the sudden change of environment shocked it, the white edge has now turned yellow.

So I have a little bit left in a new jar of LC which I quit stirring for a few days and a mat began to form on the top. So I plan on refilling it with some rich honey water to try to feed it and see if I can manage a bigger fruit on purpose.

My lions mane did this as well as my reishi but lions mane was the only one to start fruiting. I took the entire mat off the top and blended it with some fruit punch... made an amazing smoothie. My reishi mat was about a 1/4 inch thick in a 1 gallon mason jar.
If you add just a tiny bit of agar just enough to slightly suspend the bubbles it colonizes the top faster. I should take pics next time I do this :p Im a crappy documenter :shrug:

If you use the no tilt tek with the stainless steal pipe you can keep feeding in the nutrients via sterile injection through the port directly to the bottom of the culture. also if left open it will contam. Theory sound but it happened in mine green mold grew right on the top of a full colonized mat after opening. I suspect however that some of the nutrients may have found it way to the top from moving the jar.
