It is still 40% larger than Earth. And only god knows if the density of the planet is more suitable for life than the gravity.

40% larger as in diameter or mass? If it's diameter than it probably has 2 or 3 times the gravity. Too lazy to do the math, assuming similar density.

Ok. I lied. 2.74x earth gravity.

Ah. Shit. That's mass, but gravity at the surface is affected by the distance to the center. So fuck, something less than 2.74 x

if only the diameter is 40% larger but the mass is the same it will have *less gravity IIRC

or is that what you accounted for by assuming similar density?

Hopefully by the time I die we will finally have found a similar planet and observed data that can only be attributed to life.

what exactly distinguishes life from non-life? we know a lot how life works on this planet. that's not to say that's the only way life can work, just how it does on this planet

Well let say we see little bit of radiation orbiting the planet and fail to have an explanation for it, we could assume that maybe its a satellite that could have only been built by a living creature. Perhaps we can see their cities lit up on the surface at night. There's lots of thing we could witness that are out of the ordinary. We have thousands of planets to compare what is normal and what isn't. So if their is something unusual, we can definitely spot it.

Assuming the same density, a 40% Increase in diameter results in a 274% increase in mass.

Whoa. I don't know if I did this right, but since mass is a function of r3 while the force of gravity is a function of 1/r2 it turns out the given the same density, the percentage increase in gravity at the surface is equal to the percentage increase in diameter.

That can't be right. I fucked up somewhere.

Oh shit totally right. The density of earth is 5.52 g/cm3, the moon is only 3.34.

3.66*5.52/3.34=6.05

imagine we encountered a giant alien species that was way dumber than us (like caveman-intelligence). and we flew our spaceships to visit but they all just thought we were pesky insects cuz we're so small to them. they'd be as tall as like dinosaurs. we try to teach them our technology but they're all just like "get away you pesky flies!"

3.66*5.52/3.34=6.05
