NASA picture of the day - The Kepler * 2
    #14232169 -

I thought this was pretty fucking cool.

An illustration of the 1,235 potential alien planets discovered to date by NASA's Kepler mission.

* The black dots are planets next to accompanied star.
* Of the 1,235 planets only 54 are the proper distance for liquid water to be present.
* Standing alone for reference is Jupiter and the Sun.

Kepler Mission is a NASA program supported by a space observatory — the Kepler spacecraft — designed to discover Earth-like planets orbiting other stars.

oh i see

have you seen that equation that carl sagan often cites where they try to find the likelihood of there being more advanced life then us out there?

its pretty fascinating, check out COSMOS (its a tv series from the 80's) if you havn't seen it.

Yeah The Drake Equation, I just learned about it last year actually. It's awesome. You're right, I should check out COSMOS, been meaning to, just haven't gotten around to it. You know how it is.

If the whole COSMOS series is any bit as awesome as this part right here I'm sure I'm in for a treat, you know?

yeah i'll be honest with you, it's THE BEST television show I have ever seen.

i've learned more from that show then i learned in all my schooling about science.

carl sagan has taught me very much.

That was an epic series.  One of my professors was friends with Sagan.  She went to the University of Chicago with him and told me that when they would drive up to the observatory in Wisconsin, he would tell all these cool ghost stories.

He was a user of psychedelics.  Also in the book Cosmos, He says that Kepler's mother, a rumored witch, sold hallucinogenic drugs. Kepler is one of my favorite scientists.  He was an underdog in his time.

haha i havnt heard he took psychdelics, i know he smoked weed all the time

i like his quote referring to athiests

"am i an athiest? no.. they must know a lot more then me"

i think he was agnostic. a true scientist.

I read about the psychs in a paper called: Psychedelics and holistic thinking- a tool for science.  I was trying to find a link for it but I couldn't. It is a good read.  It talks about other scientists as well, for instance, Richard Feynman.

Man all of those shows "The wonders of the universe" "The Universe" "How our unviverse Works" etc are all absolutely amazing shows. their was was i watched recently with Mogan Freeman and it showed how everything in our bodies is made from stars and supernova's. We are nothing but star dust. Blew my mind for like a week

:awehigh:  Drake Equation is fucking awesome

For some reason that's a really neat little bit of random knowledge.
I don't believe in ghosts, but no doubt it would be fun to listen to Sagan tell stories about them.

Also, as far as Sagan and psychedelics, I always thought this was a good quote:

"I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, un-available to us without such drugs." - Carl Sagan

Nice quote.  I haven't seen that one before.  Thank you.
