Drunk driver trying to evade cops kills 2 and critically injures 5 at SXSW

Just hours ago.

This dude gets hammered, is out having a good time at SXSW Austin, decides to get in his car...and just like that: Life. Over. Not just his but two others as well, plus others who might not make it through the morning. Supposedly he had prior DWI's and tried to evade a checkpoint, freaked out and hit the gas...and went straight into the crowd. Killed 2, 5 others are clinging to life in critical condition, and 18 more were taken to the hospital.

Yeah. He's motherfucked. He won't see another day of freedom for the rest of his life. 2 lives already confirmed taken and with five in critical -- I mean by the time all is said and done he could have like 4 or 5 deaths on his hands.

It is sad. And this particular case is heartbreaking.

But, it's not a rare event - at all - whatsoever.

According to the Center for Disease Control 28 people are killed per day by drunk drivers. That is about 200 victims dead each week!

Sadly, drunken driving is just part of it....how many people nod off from too many opiates, or drive really stoned on mj, or even drive tripping because they expected the effects to wear off sooner. It is ALL driving impaired...be careful throwing stones.

Also, I believe drivers will soon start getting swabbed by cops to check for opiates and yes....THC if the cops suspect something. I think they are already doing this with truck drivers in some states.....:shrug:

First, we don't know he was impaired.  If he was impaired, we don't know if it was alcohol.  As far as we know, the auto had a mechanical failure and the guy had nothing to do with it.

Innocent until proven guilty, I say.

Not many drivers at all, because drivers on those substances know when they are impaired and normally can judge if they are able to drive. Alcohol on the other hand gives you that invincible feeling of I can do anything, kind of like cocaine except way more impairing.

:thumbup: i'm not one to judge people on their personal decisions (what substances they choose to use) but it doesnt seem all that uncommon for alcohol to cross the line and affect others.

lol...I'm well aware of what alcohol does....however, especially in states where mj is legal and being decriminalized I am very sure that there are going to be tons of tests done on things like response times or hand to eye coordination ...there will be limits and standards set...just like alcohol. MADD will demand it. I would say within the next few years. I, for one, can't drive stoned...my decision making process is fucked.
The other thing is....who the hell thinks ahead of time that they're gonna nod off on a divided highway after a long day and a oxy habit?
