Migraines and mushrooms
    #19627055 -

I notice a huge decline in the number of migraines I have every week after a good trip but after a month or so I notice the onset of the migraines (auras and pain) start to come around again...lets say I started micro dosing, would I have to gradually increase all the time? Would I be able to do this without it being noticed at school or work? ANY advice on migraines and micro dosing would be greatly appreciated

a low dose (1g or less) will feel similar to the abortive medication that is triptans.  The low dosages will become less and less effective, just as triptans.  How often do they occur, frequency, etc?    Sometimes all that is needed is to break the cycle that you can fall into.  What have you used before, preventative or abortive?

What is your approximate age if you don't mind me asking?  Only reason I ask is b/c they normally begin to show back up in the late twenties/early thirties and can last well into the mid 40's, but the good news is they normally taper off by then, so you got something good to look forward to... right?

But no, IMO the micro dosing will work for a bit, then you are in for some kickass rebound that triptans (which mushrooms are part of) will be less effective.  They say that you really don't want to make those meds not work for you when you need them... scary feeling

If I'm not taking anything a few times a week which is debilitating, I can't work or concentrate in school even if I just feel them coming on it's enough to put me in a horrible, confusing mood. I've been on topamax and it works but makes everything taste weird so I lose weight and I'm already only 125. I'm also on immetrex every 15 mins during a migraine. I'm 26, female and I've had these non stop since I was 16.... I just don't know what to do and I'm at my best for the couple of weeks after I trip so I thought micro dosing would be a good option. I have a constant pain in my temple also I've just learned to live with and even that feels better afterwards. All this happened after a wreck though so that may be completely unrelated.

Does anyone else in your family suffer from them?  I understand about the debilitation, withering on the bathroom floor is not the best place to spend a few hours :frown:  How long did the break last after a good trip?  If you a like me, a few weeks break can sometimes be awesome.  Caffeine taken twice a day will work as preventative for me.. sometimes.  Have you noticed a cycle, like with me, I may get one 1 time a month, then 2-3, 4-5, 2-3, then once a month again.  Dopamax does kinda suck, but it works to an extent, but when you miss a dose... instant drop over the event horizon migraine.

One of the best abortive meds is the name brand maxalt, but it is expensive and generic makes me sick for a few days afterwards.  It sucks literally sitting there with the pill in your hand wondering if the headache that just came on is going to turn nasty, knowing that nausea will be waiting for you for the next few days.  Weight loss is a struggle for me too as of late...  but back on topic, I have used tea to stop a migraine if it hasn't fully developed yet, still takes 1.5-2 hours for some reason, just like all triptans.  pm me if you want to swap "things that work for a time"

No no one in my family has any history of migraines or cluster headaches...and the relief can last 3-4 weeks usually, I just wish there was something more permanent is all. Plus, you know, some of us are paranoid and don't like taking pills that could be tampered with by the government haha

FWIW, i did a personal anecdotal sort of study once.

a long time ago in a land far far away I grew some mushrooms and had all the time in the world to eat them, so I was eating them like every other day. Decent amounts too. So somehow i heard that by eating tuna fish sandwiches (or by ingesting foods high in Omega 3's) would kind of replenish your brain and allow you to maintain the same threshold.

SO between my friend and I we alternated as one being the control group and the other being the variable. On monday I ate the shit out of some tuna sandwiches, and he did not, then reversed it on Wednesday, then Friday, each eating the same 3-4 dried grams of penis envy's.
He bitched out after the first week, but i kept going on my own and I just kept up eating tuna because it seemed to be working. Basically over the course of 2 weeks I tripped about 8-9 times (some days i did back to back days) and never really increased my dosage.
Except towards the end I started to run out of dried mushrooms and started eating them right out of the substrate. I remember I ate a mushroom that was wet weighed at 56 on the last day and had a blast. Not sure how much more that was than my normal 3-4 g dose, but it was enough to prove to me that either we really don't build up tolerance to mushrooms, or tuna works to some degree.

Most people don't find this out in a normal setting. How many people do you know that have tripped x days in a row and wasn't at some festival.
generally people have such a good time after a day of tripping that they couldn't fathom diving right back in again, having exerted so much energy the day before.

Jesus dude I could not trip that much....well I could but I would surely lose my job after the first week. I'm a little confused though, are you saying micro dosing could work for extended periods of time if I just add some tuna in there? Don't they have supplements that would be easier than eating tuna all the time? I'm not going to lie, I laughed a little while reading that but I'm willing to try just about anything at this point.

Thanks for the advice everyone, it is greatly appreciated

well, the thing i read talked about omega 3's and fatty acids and then cite that tuna fish is a great cheap source of that... so that is where the tuna fish sandwiches came in.

as for migraines, never had em. hell, I can count on one hand the times I have even had a headache in my life, and most of those were from severe hangovers.

my post was primarily about the shaky notion that a person has to keep upping the dosage on mushrooms. I don't really have any evidence for or against that notion, but all I can offer is anecdotal shit about how I tripped almost non stop for 2 weeks while eating tuna fish without having to up my dosage to get an increasing threshold. so either the tuna fish works, or there is no resistance per se.

From what I have gathered online and from my own experiences, the micro dosing will work for about a month.  Most people dose like that for the depression aspect of it, but the effect it has on migraine is very similar, will work for a bit, then not.  And when it doesn't work anymore, then you have lost one way to abort a migraine effectively.. which are already rare gems.

Try it next time you feel one coming on, get .8 - 1g of cracker dry material and grind it up as best you can, steep in hot (not boiling) water for about 15 mins, stirring it around, then pass through a coffee filter and squeeze the last bit of juice from it.  Then drink.  For some, 45-60 min the migraine will be gone (if you don't have a tolerance to triptans, or it hasn't gone critical), but for me it takes 1.5-2 hours (I can feel a head change in 1 hr, but for some reason the relief of the headache takes longer).  the bad thing about using them as abortive is the rebound happens after about 8 hours, where as "traditional pharms" the rebound is ~24-36 hours.

for micro dosing, you want to shoot for .25-.5g daily, or even twice daily depending on how you react.

honestly, what do you have to lose?  I can tell you that (making tea anyway) is nicer on the digestive system than the pharms, but they really don't work as well as the $20/pill :frown:

For the dude taking large doses frequently, let us know how well that worked out for you about a year from now   :frown: regrets

666th post lol....and a gram of what I have right now will give me OEV's and that's not really what I want during a migraine (I'll already not be in the best mood). Idk what happened but these cubes are potent and it's not just me either, I've had several friends have them on a 1.5 and another friend completely lose his shit on 2....  given that info would you start out at the .25? I don't want to build my tolerance too fast but I want it to work at the same time.

What about triggers, have you kept track of foods, and are your teeth making good contact?

You know yourself better than internet people do hopefully, but I would wager a large amount that you wouldn't have to worry about a migraine interfering with a triptamine experience, remember, the gold standard of migraine medication is triptamines..

are you still taking the topamax daily and just looking for  something less side-effecty for preventative?  If so, I understand the hesitancy then.  You might be better off starting with .1 then, but if it feels like a migraine is coming on, you will need a higher dose, know what I mean?  If you are basically in the middle of a migraine cycle (as in they come back anytime whatever medication you are using wears off) then it will take a much larger dose to stop it.  Can you explain what happens and the time frames during an episode?  Have you been to a dr, blood pressure, etc?

You should really be careful about how you use imitrex, is it taken orally?  Every 15 min does not sound right at all, there is a reason why you should not take more than 2 doses of it in an entire day.  Just like any triptamine, you really need to give it ~2 hours to really work.  This is definitely not the place to get REAL medical advice, you do know the pub spills out into the real forums right?  Let us know what you are taking exactly

Weird you should say this, I've had tmj since my car accident and my jaw pops when I chew and stuff so probably not, I didn't know the two could be related. I've yet to find any foods or drinks that are triggers but I tried to drink once during a migraine and I do NOT suggest it, drinking made it 10x worse

Yeah I take topamax twice a day and I am looking for something less "side effecty". Yes I take the immetrex orally and it does seem to help after about an hour. It says every 15 but my insurance only pays for 9 pills a month so I'm almost afraid to take them so I usually only take the 2 doses anyways....I've never been to a doctor during a migraine if that's what you mean, it's pretty much impossible since I would have to drive myself there and I always choose to ride it out over the pain of driving.

This sounds exactly like my migraines before cannabis. I can't say what mushrooms have done to that effect, due to doing cannabis first. However, before doing any of these, I would spend about half of a day every two weeks laying on the bathroom floor (its the coldest), only lifting my head to chuck in the toilet before I lay back on the floor. Ever since smoking, frequency has dropped to one migraine every 4-6 months.
