Well, yeah, my point was that HFCS is really not much worse for you than any other type of sugar so the harm comes when you're eating too much of it.

You have to be a blithering retard not to already know what is highly caloric and what isn't

Yeah I can foresee many restaurants having to close under the crippling weight of this extra cost. Writing some numbers on a menu is expensive as fuck.

What are you saying is an "arbitrary number" calories? Sorry the second half of your first sentence is incomprehensible to me.

No, read what I actually said. Any additive that has been proven to be unsafe is usually outlawed.

It's way more important to me to know the nutritional density of my food then it is to know which one of the seven food dyes that are permitted to be in food in the US are in whatever I order.

Without knowing what those calories are, its not very important to know how many there are. As far as healthy/unhealthy ("safe") food legality, I'm not going to get into that - its more than I can chew on right now.

I don't really see this conversation going anywhere

Not until the government put a number next to it, anyway. Now my life has done a complete 180, thanks guys!

Well shit, I'm not even thinking about fastfood. If someone doesn't know that garbage is bad for them - how do they find the toilet?

it is a joke now, but it was the motto of the Polk administration. America was really going to fight Canada to fix the border in Oregon.

I think it would be pretty hard to do this, you can't have each meal be exactly the same obviously. As well as the fact that someone is going to have to pay for all the testing to determine the amount of calories in the food, something I'm not sure businesses should have to shell out for. It'd be nice to be able to see the nutritional information about what I'm going to eat if I asked for it, but making it mandatory seems a bit overboard.

I tend to think its a good idea.

Caloric restriction has been shown to lengthen the lifespan of most types of animals, and its probably the single biggest predictor of weight loss, and health.

I think it's a silly law.. If you wanna be healthy, educate yourself on what's healthy to eat, end of story.

Calories aren't everything.

The problem is those who are sick and unhealthy cost our society hugely in medical bills.
In a perfect world everyone would research their options and pick healthy things, but that isn't the way the world works. I would rather those that are too dumb to do their own research see the calorie counts and do a double-take. Sure many will keep on eating fatty sugar-laden foods, but some won't.

Now that you put it that way, it's the first time I've seen private healthcare as a positive.. That is, as long as health insurance cost no more than public healthcare does at the moment..

But I still think many will choose to be ignorant and eat unhealthy, it is their choice after all, and many simply don't give a shit. Especially as you put it, when public healthcare's got their back. I can tell you I've done some riskier things (mostly as a kid) due to the knowledge that if I got hurt, I'd be covered thanks to our healthcare system.

I'm still against turning public services into businesses though, so the cons don't really outweigh that.

Yeah, it is.  How do you calculate them?  Restaurants operate on the slimmest of margins and have an average life of about 3 years.

You're failure to do the proper calisthenics are costing society billions.  You're continued drug abuse is costing society billions.  You're addiction to the Shroomety instead of work is costing society billions.

By the way, how exactly does it cost "society" anything?

Projecting much?
I exercise a lot, am healthy, do not abuse drugs, and pay out a large portion of my income in tax. I think I am OK but thanks for the concern.
It's funny you always attempt to make something personal. Is it because your argument is so shitty on it's own that you need to needle people to get a rise out of them?

Well you see here in Canada we have public healthcare. This means that a portion of my taxes goes to fund healthcare. It's in everyone's best interest for people to be healthy, as it's cheaper.

Before you inevitably start crying about how the US system is better, I like our system much better than the terrible clusterfuck you guys have. Also I am not a greedy asshole and don't mind collectively paying so everyone can get healthcare, which is a human right in my opinion.

It's an OK idea, if you don't know much about nutrition.
It's a good start but calories don't dictate healthiness.

Obviously not.
However it is a good start and perhaps will prod people into researching for themselves.
Years ago we didn't have nutritional labels on food - now they are mandatory. I think that was a positive move forward, just as this is.

Yeah 34 million is quite a few combinations. Tabulating it by topping rather than by combination seems a lot simpler, no?

If the consumers want it bad enough, then the free marketplace will come up with it on it's own. We don't need the government to tell us how to run our businesses.
