Ontario Liberals want to force restaurant to write down the calorie count next to the price

Personally, I despise the Liberal party of Ontario. It has shown to be the most incompetent party the province ever had and people have been stupid enough to elect them for 12 fucking years in a row.

BUT

I think this is a good idea. Maybe, just maybe, it will make people make healthier choices at the restaurant.

Personally I would want the government to impose a similar law for sodium or even go further as to limit the amount of sodium restaurants can put in their food.

What are you thoughts on this?

Knowing the number of calories of food energy there are in something really doesn't tell you much at all about how healthy it is for you. This would give you a rough idea of value for money though so I'd appreciate it from that perspective.

But it does make it easier not to over eat. Plus there's the guilt factor. You weant to pick between to plates and you don't know which one. Well now you have a tie breaker!

I think the law is good. It doesn't prevent anyone from eating high calorie food, it just makes them more aware of the high calorie food they are eating which is a good thing.

I'd like it better if the focus was on ingredients, public health is a worthwhile investment but calorie count just seems redundant. I'm no doctor though :shrug:

Ideally the flip side on a menu should be the nutritional info of each plate

I feel no guilt whatsoever for eating. If I'm really hungry it's generally because I've burned a lot of energy. If a certain item gets me the most calories per dollar and I have a limited amount of money in by pocket, I'll go with that because I require the energy to keep going. Conversely if I haven't been burning a lot of energy I eat smaller amounts, but food energy per dollar spent is still a big factor if I only happen to have a few bucks in my pocket.

Lots of people don't burn the energy they ingest and get fat.

I'm like you though, I can eat 3500 calories a day without gaining weight. My metabolism is fast, I walk a lot so I burn it all.

Lots of people can't say the same and therefore its a little boost for them, especially if they are actively trying to lose weight but still want a little treat at the restaurant once in a while.

The other thing is that calorie counting is a pretty rudimentary way of assessing potential for weight gain. Eating 1000 calories of sugar does not do the same thing as eating 1000 calories of fat or 1000 calories of protein.

I personally think this is a great idea. I love when food places have caloric content next to the price.

You can reason out what ingredients are in most things you order, but it's very hard to judge caloric levels without being given a number or doing a calorimetry experiment on your own (:lol:). So, if you have a calorie count of a sandwich you can look at it and see that it's mostly bread, so the calories are mostly coming from carbs, but that there's a lot of meat and veggies on it so you're going to be getting nutritional value out of the sandwich not just empty calories. You can also compare between items knowing their calorie levels and visually judging how nutritional the content is. :shrug:

But you can tell by looking at something rough percentages of where your calories are coming from.

Plus its gonna be a source of revenue. Some restaurant owners a bound to cheat and therefore will pay a fine if they get caught

Is it OK if I come and force you to exercise in the square.  And what kind of blithering idiot doesn't already know that that food is bad for you?  I am so sorry that you need your hand held for you at every turn.  I am even more sad for Tymoteusz who is supposedly some scientist but doesn't seem to understand nutrition that is taught in high school.

All this does is levy a tax on poor people

I've worked in enough restaurants to know this little, what do you think goes into a bootleg pudding or a signature BBQ sauce from a restaurant you've never eaten at?

Generally impossible to know without seeing the ingredients listed, even if you could see it and taste it - very difficult and with some ingredients down right impossible.

Staying healthy and fit is really no fucking mystery, either. A calorie count isn't going to help you there, and implementing this under the pretense of helping people 'get healthy' is just fucking ridiculous.
Putting down the fucking fork and picking up a pair of running shoes might help some of these fatasses, not a little number next to their favorite plate of deep-fried lard.

Missing the point, as usual.
This doesn't force consumers not to pack their bellies full of calorific junk food, but it may give them second thought as a lot are clueless as to the calorie contents, and many companies do not readily offer this information for obvious reasons.

I don't see how this has anything to do with nutrition "as taught in high school". No one is saying calories is the only thing that matters - but it's a good start.
