I've worked in enough restaurants to know this little, what do you think goes into a bootleg pudding or a signature BBQ sauce from a restaurant you've never eaten at?

Generally impossible to know without seeing the ingredients listed, even if you could see it and taste it - very difficult and with some ingredients down right impossible.

I wasn't talking about specific ingredients of sauces. In general you can assume any sauce-like mixture or pudding isn't going to be healthy to begin with and will likely have a lot of fat/sugar/sodium.

However, you can make reasonable estimates as to what percentage of your food is coming from where unless you're blind or you have no nutritional intuition whatsoever. With a sandwich, a small percentage of the calories will come from the sauce but a large percentage of those calories will be nutritionally deficient fatty calories. It's all logical deduction, and a calorie count gives you something to base your estimates off of.

Depends on the sauce and the restaurant really, but that was only two examples. Take a sandwich, what went into the bread? Could have HFCS and you're better off with extra calories than with HFCS

Number of calories doesn't say a lot about what you're eating, unless its exaggeratedly high like 1000 calories in a sandwich - then you pretty much know its garbage. I'm all for mandatory open-book recipes, I don't see why it would be reduced to the least useful piece of information on a nutritional menu though

How is the calorie number on menu forcing you to do anything?

Its funny arguing with you. You ALWAYS jump to the most extreme conclusions without even thinking it seems. Seriously dude. If you feel forced by a restaurant menu, seek help.

It should be obvious when bread has HFCS (which isn't that bad for you really - it's worse to take in a bunch of empty calories than to have a little HFCS. The only time HFCS is really bad is when you're eating a ton of it and not burning off all the energy).

Number of calories does tell you everything about what you're eating if you gauge rough percentages of ingredients. What's important in your diet is where your calories are coming from, so if you can only have one bit of information the overall caloric content is the best thing to have because any reasonable person can judge what percentage of their meal is contributing to what percentage of calories - which tells you how nutritionally dense a meal is.

What single piece of nutritional information do you think is more useful? The caloric content is the most useful thing you can be given - unless it's the caloric content of a pot of mystery slop.

LOTS of people have no idea how to eat healthfully, or think it can only be done by eating stuff that doesn't taste good or starving yourself. Are you also against nutrition labels on grocery store food? I see no difference between the two. I work in the food industry, and I honestly think people would be grotesquely surprised at the ingredients. The amount of salt and sugar we use, and the food industry as a whole uses, is embarrassing. Calories doesn't cover everything, but it's a start, although I think restaurants shouldn't need laws to do so, and I suppose lots are already doing it anyway...including McDonalds of all places.

"Adults worldwide eat almost double daily recommended amount of sodium" http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/03/130321110920.htm

Given how prevalent heart and blood vessel issues are in the modern world, it's blatantly obvious that people are very careless and/or ignorant with their eating habits. Tracking calories has been shown to be beneficial, so knowing exactly what you're quantitatively ordering, imo, is a boon for public health.

Food in restaurants are generally pretty processed, unless you're buying a salad without dressing or plain water I don't see a reason to be confident in knowing what you're eating.

Personally I'm more concerned with ingredients, especially chemicals and the odd "color" or "flavor". Unless you're paying $20+ a plate or are fortunate enough to have some kind of organic whole food restaurant at hand, most of what's on the plate will be heavily processed in some way. GMO's aren't a concern to me, referring more to preservatives and aesthetic enhancers.

That's all I can really say though not being a doctor or nutritionist, I don't eat out anymore having worked in a dozen restaurants across 9 cities from coast to coast. If that industry dissipated, I would celebrate

You care more about food dyes than nutritional density?:hmm:

Anything that is proven to be unsafe is usually outlawed.

Yes, I care much more about unidentified substances in food labelled simply as a quality of said substance than an arbitrary number.

Do you really believe that only "safe" food is legal? I'm not even going to go there.

Yeah it's not like packaged food in US grocery stores is required to have nutrition labels, that would just be big-government lunacy. Think of how the extra ink used would add to food costs.

I love when restaurants are telling calories per plate, because a lot of the times there are also other things about the restaurant that makes me feel like they are more conscious about what they are serving their customers.

What are you saying is an "arbitrary number" calories? Sorry the second half of your first sentence is incomprehensible to me.

No, read what I actually said. Any additive that has been proven to be unsafe is usually outlawed.

It's way more important to me to know the nutritional density of my food then it is to know which one of the seven food dyes that are permitted to be in food in the US are in whatever I order.

It forces them to pay more.  Or don't you think that compliance with nanny state nonsense will come at a cost?

You have to be a blithering retard not to already know what is highly caloric and what isn't

Don't forget type II diabetes. Subjecting your body to drastic sugar spikes can have a negative impact even if you're not remotely overweight.
