Ergotamine is a migraine medication I've never heard of anyone tripping off it! You mean just ergot right?

I dont think even ergot would necessarily kill you right away as many of the people who used to get st Anthony's fire in the old days, would have been suffering with the disease for a good while I think until their pilgrimage to the saint Anthony miraculously seemed to cure them of it!

Of course this was because during the journey to visit the saint they were no longer eating the rye bread infected with the ergot fungus! It does go to show though I think that recovery was possible and simply eating ergot once or twice wasn't and isn't guaranteed to kill you!

I wonder about the ergot trip too! How much did they take, and was a little bit of ergot similar to ingesting LSD and if so how much LSD? Was it the same experience only with accompanying gangrene and sickness 100 times worse than HBWR? I've looked around the net for some more recent reports of ergot poisoning and its effects on the mind before, but to be honest there is not a lot of data out there!

Must have been one of the worst trips ever though:

I've always wondered that too. Something else that interests me is the theory that Kykeon was a wine made with ergot. I can't remember what the active constituent is, however. It would be nice if someone reminded me.

If you are wondering what Kykeon is, it's a drink used for ritual purposes in the Eleusinian Mysteries in Greece a long time ago.

I think the Kykeon they used there was different from the type peasants drank.
