motorcycles are dangerous

Because people seem to never pay attention to anything while driving. A little back story; my uncle died a long and painful death from crashing his bike in 96. I watched him die for 2 weeks before they had done everything humanly possible and we decided to turn off the respirator. Since then I've been afraid to ride, but I also know the accident was his fault. He was drunk and angry and had just had a terrible fight with his woman and was driving down the wrong side of the highway and ran into a cop head on going 80+.

The past few years I have been on this thing where if I'm afraid of something I make it a point to do it or face it, this is the only thing left. Come spring I'm taking the msf course and getting my endorsement, saying goodbye to driving a cage for a while and ride full time. I live in an area where other than the random hurricane it's totally doable. Once I made this decision I started to look at my and others driving habits differently. I used to think I was an really good driver, and for the most part I was. Now though I realize I wasn't paying as much attention as I could have and sometimes wonder if there is a rider out there somewhere that curses my existence.

So does anyone have any tips or stories that might help me not get squished on the mean streets and anything else you think might be important?

Just pretend all the cagers are out to kill you. stay near the powerband so you can get out of trouble with a twist of the wrist. Make sure to stay out of peoples blind spots, always be in their mirrors.

What kind of bike are you getting?

Since I've never ridden anything other than a scooter, I'm leaning heavily towards one of the honda 500's. Not really into sport bikes. They look cool but I'll mostly be riding around town and a short trip to drill one a month. Once I get more confident maybe looking at a roadtrip to see my peeps in mo.

I recently spent two years out of work due to some asshole in a car who said in the police report "i wasnt paying attention and turned out n front of him"  him meaning me

This prick was sitting in the turning lane facing s waiting to turn left while i was going n

He waited till the worst time possible to turn i didnt even have time to depress the brakes and t-boned him in the fender at 60mph

Broke both bones in my forearm both exposed (meaning both bones came thru the skin)

Broke my hand

Cut my right thumb tip off

Torn rotator

3 surgeries on my arm + 1 on my hip for a bone graft

One to reattch my thumb tip

And still need one on shoulder later

I was cleared to go back to work but on the bright side my house payed off

Don't get a 1000cc as a first bike.

Motorcycles have a roughly 4x higher chance to be in an accident causing injury than a car.  It's not THAT dangerous as long as you're hyper-vigilant while riding.

Hello.

I've had Harley Davidson's and motorcycles in my blood since I was born. The first time I sat on a bike is I can't even remember I was so young. My first bike I got when I was 16, it was a 250cc. My first REAL bike and a Harley I got a few months later at 17. It's a Sportster 883cc. I fucking love that bike.

People say loud pipes save lives. I can't stress enough to take a motorcycle course. In VA it is mandatory to do a 3 day safety course for you M endorsement.

Always wear a FULL FACE MASK. Yes,I have a street legal helmet that is thinner than 1 inch, I wear it if I have a passenger, I give them the full face mask. That thing will save your life.

Be a defensive driver. Always keep your bike inspected, and tune it up every year after winter.

The last piece of advise I have is work on your leg muscles. Having strong muscles in you legs will amount to a ton of more control on your bike. Especially if you have a passenger. We can talk about that later.

PS I had a moped as a teenager. I've been riding for a long ass time. Hope some of this was useful.

That was the idea but by time i got out the hospital and not able to go back to work for some time wasnt able to afford to get it out of impound

I let someone on my 883 who never used a bike before. That was stupid of me. This guy thankfully held the break in, but he revved the bike up SO loud you could probably hear it for a mile away or more.

Needless to say that sound I won't forget. It sounded like death. Set has some sound advise!

Well my uncle has a bike but the government took it from him. They said he was driving without an official license. Apparently they gave him a license under the name of a foreign golf player and he was known for drinking with members of bowling committees in his free time. This made the owners of the golf courses somewhat skeptical to the notion that he may remain a tennis player & not find the temptation to join the bowlers overbearing, so hard to refuse that he would quit his formerly claimed favorite sport to go off with bowlers.

You mention drivers, but sometimes I see a driver & what I'm seeing is someone not driving but doing some similar action associated with driving but not really driving. You know what I mean as if its on an automatic steer? You don't even know if the person driving in front of you is driving or maybe his cousin is. You suspect that he might be pretending to drive but really wishing to give otheres the impression of driving whilst never truly driving driving.

I used to rent cars for a week and then dispose of the automobile to find new wheels. I was always in a need for speed, always had to have the latest set of wheels. I would let them borrow my car for hours and not expect them to return it for days, and it was fine by me because a cousin in Cuba woudl send a car down regardless. He always had a spare car to distribute to my family circle, for we keep a close bond to each other & all our supported through us all contributing our funds to discover the "ideal" motor. We were never satisfied with a car that couldn't drive 500 miles and back without having to stop. We wanted to go all the way there & back quickly.

In fall 2008 an owner of a car company officially declared me a certified driver with years of experience. They believed that I fulfilled all of their expectations of how someone should maneuver when on the road. People would come up to me & give me a thumbs up because of how precious my driving skills were. They would say something along the lines of "I really appreciate you having an aptitude for driving carefully, you appear to proceed with the utmost caution when behind the wheel, as if you are protecting the streets by you driving. For the more you drive the less risk of someone crashing. They also would mention how other people needed to be somewhere now and would speed just to get there in time. Which was diff from me, who would let other people get to a location before me. I was in no rush to get to the destination I chose as my most desired location to reside at. I've never received a speeding ticket & I've always drive at the recommended speed limit, never daring to press the wheel down a little more so I can get that little extra amount of speed to get whereever I need to go quicker.

There was a guy on here last year who had never been on a bike before, bought a 600cc super sport, never took a course, and was riding with no gear other than a helmet.  Absolutely idiotic.  I wonder if he's still alive.

I've been riding dirtbikes since I was 8, and street bikes since I was 17. I love motorcycles they are my life, and I currently own 5 motorcycles. I ride all year long too even during the winter months unless it's snowing. This is what I've learned throughout the years.

Always assume other people/cars don't see you
Watch your mirrors when stopped or coming to stop
Don't ride in the center of the road that's where all the oil and dirt lays
Approach blind corners and hills that you can't see around cautiously

Basically, always expect the worst. I know that might sound a little crazy but it's kept me alive. I have had extremely close calls, ones that probably would have killed me if I weren't always on the lookout. I'm not trying to scare you, but other people are idiots and terrible drivers.

The #1 cause of death on a motorcycle on a public road in the USA is people in cars pulling out in front of you. I've had it happen so many times I've lost count. You have to assume at every driveway, intersection and parking lot there is a car that is going to pull out in front of you.

It's gotten so bad that I'm not riding on the street anymore. The sad truth is I'm safer at a race track.

Wow, thanks for all the excellent advise. I will most definitely take the msf course and go back to take the other courses they offer. Being in the national guard I have to take the military rider course also if I want to ride on a base. Maybe later on when I have some experience under my belt we can organize a shroomerite riders meet or something. Someone should start a users forum for motorcyclists, there seems to be enough people for one to work. Keep posting, I like reading about others experiences.

I'd get a grom but I have to ride at highway speeds to get to drill.
