I know some of you out there are into bikes. Well, I'm planning on buying one this summer. I'm looking to get a nice Honda cruiser, maybe 600cc or so.

What can anyone tell me about bikes in general.

Yea, I've been on dirtbikes enough to know how to handle them. I still have alot of decisions to make.

A friend of mine owns a 700cc cruise, and is going to let me try it out when I get home.

I'm going blind into this, but at the same time I have alot to learn, hence this post.

Yea, I'm a mountain boy thorugh and through, born and raised on back roads and a rural area. I've wanted a bike for awhile, and with my summer job I'll finally have the income level to get my frist one.

Can't wait to tear up some back roads I know.

no matter what. before you buy, or immediately after...

TAKE
THE
MSF
COURSE!!!

not only do you learn neat stuff on a closed obstacle course with someone else's bike, but you also get a discount on your insurance.
everyone should take the MSF, even people who dont have a motorcycle. It makes you more aware of everything, and awareness is the most important thing when driving or riding.
Be humble. there is no room for pride or ego here. The hard pavement doesnt care if youre a country boy or not.

Thanks for the heads up, but I plan on taking a motorcycle safety and handling course. In Pennsylvania, you must take a course and earn a motorcyclists permit. Or something like that.

p.s. Mountain boy, not country boy. Damn flatlanders....

If I were you i'd go with maybe a more sporty bike, being that you live in the mountain - more windy type roads are more fun and sport bikes tend to handle a lot better.

Right now I have a GS500 its kind of sport/touring and it gets me around the city fast and cheap but its got great handling. I'm thinking about moving up to a honda shadow 650 within the next year or so.

If you're set on a cruiser look into the 650s and then it usually goes up to 1000cc/1200cc which is brutal on insurance (in canada anyways).

The suzuki SV650s are nice sporty bikes, good to learn on and tons of power to keep you learning.

  Please don't get a "can-a-tuna"!

Look into a Suzuki GSXR750.  If you get a 600, in about a year you are gonna wish you got a bigger bike.  600s are fun to learn on, but you will want more power pretty quickly.  If you do wanna go 600, then look into a Honda F4i.

Don't start off on a 600cc sportbike like an F4i... your dirtbike experience will help but there are many aspects of handling a street bike that are different. The new 600's are still extremely fast.

Get a beater like a GS500 and learn how it handles... you may drop it... sometimes shit happens. Take MSF and get some decent gear... especially boots that offer ankle protection. I crashed and flew over 100ft in the mountains and survived because I was wearing full leather.

I don't understand why people are always telling beginners to go bigger than 5 or 600 because they will want more power. 500 is a lot of power for riding around on the street and you will not grow out of it in any short amount of time. I think it's irresponsible for people to recommend supersports for beginners. Too much power + too little experience = people get fucked up.

honda shadow is your best bet.

they come in 750cc or 1100cc. only 4 gears. enough torque that when you downshift to slow down, your rear wheel skids.
and theyre fuel injected, so good economy. plus, hondas last forever.

but again. if it's your first real motorcycle on the roads, always ALWAYS get something small. you can always sell it and get something bigger if you REALLY think that you have exceeded the limits of the bike (nearly impossible).
dont even think about a modern 600 sport bike. those things are waaaay too fast for a first bike. and what's the point of having a bike that fast anyway? youll just be pussy-footing it around in low rpms most of the time.

i highly recommend the Suzuki SV650. It's a naked standard. Unlike most sport bikes with 4 cylinders and most of the power in the higher rpms, this one has a v-twin with plenty of low-end torque to cruise around traffic with. it's a great beginner bike, and youll never get bored of it.

Well, first things first.

How much are you looking to spend?

If its not a lot, i suggest you get an older japanese bike. The parts are everywhere, they are super cheap, and and they still run forever.

I have had a 1979 Kawasaki KZ1000 for 4 years and its always run like a dream. And i might have spent $4000 on it in the last 4 years. That includes performance upgrade on the engine, which i could do in my own garage with little skill.

Irresponsible to recommend a powerful bike? Riding should always be within safe speeds on the street. If you plan on using all your bikes power on the street, be it an old, slower heavy bike or a newer high displacement rocket on wheels, then you shouldn't own a bike to begin with. If you wanna hit 150 mph or accelerate full throttle, then take it to the track. I just don't see the point in spending $2K on a beater, just so a year from now you can spend $8K on the bike you really wanted all along. Just cause a bike has alot of power doesn't mean you have to use it all.

i was gonna suggest a honda shadow too.  they're pretty damn tough.  a guy at work has the 1100cc with ape hangers.  cool bike.  sounds wicked!

i have modern 600cc sportbike, a yamaha R6 =)  it's fucking sick.  i love it.  i feel like this when i ride it. :hotidea: haha

I'm not gonna read this whole thread, these come up every spring, But to add something thats probably already here: You can have a lot of Fun on a smaller CC bike. Almost all of the bikes i've owned, built or ridden and really enjoyed were not over 600cc old triumphs or yama's or some shit like that.

tourist trophy! i'm going to buy it right now. seriously.

gixxers are cool though. i'm not sure i want a liter sportbike. the 600 is PLENTY for me. who knows though, maybe later down the road. next bike will probably be a cruiser. i mean, if i want more power and accel from the 6, i can always add full exhaust, intake upgrade....lighten parts, change the gearing...things like that. but it's wild as it is. lol

i'd definitely go for a 1000 something cc cruiser though =)
