YAY, one step closer to Motorcyclist!!

Tomorrow I'll be looking at a 1978 Yamaha 175cc dirt/street bike. This thing better not be in dumpy aesthetic condition. Anybody have one of these bikes or something of a similar engine size? It'll be my first motor vehicle!!

If Burnsy hits me, I could find my way into a million dollar settlement...unless of course I hire Lyonel Hutz aka Miguel Sanchez.

I learned to ride on a 150cc dirt bike. I think there's kits to give it turn signals and shit to make a dual purpose. They're wicked fun, but you will get bored of it quickly on the road.

You think I'll get bored of it quickly on the road? I've been riding a bicycle for every transportation need of mine since I was 5, I'm now 21. I think a motorcycle of any size blows bicycling (as a means of transportation) out of the water. I'm only getting this motorcycle for very short distance local travelling, but of course I don't want to get stuck on a crappy bike that I'll want to upgrade from shortly. The other option was to go for a 1980s Honda Rebel 250cc...but the price isn't as right as the $500 the Yamaha 175cc will cost me. Either way, I'm sure I can get rid of the bike for around what I'll pay for it if I end up needing more power.
**EDIT** What kind of questions should I ask the owner of the bike regarding the bike's quality and it's potential longevity? Is there anything specific that a first timer wouldn't immediately think of that I should ask the owner when purchasing a motorcycle?

Might check local laws regarding Freeways/hyways and such. Here in Calif., the minimum size for Freeway is 250cc. Just a thought. Peace

Ahh, thanks for that bit of info. I definitely needed to hear that, however, i never wanted to ride on the freeway...so i think this bike will fit my purposes for the time being. 250cc would be best, but 175cc is what I can get for the price i can afford. Oh well, there's always the future (unless i die on my motorcycle ).

Memorize as much as you can and don't forget bring a flashlight, and bring a friend. one will help you see things you'd normally overlook, the other will help you walk away if you don't feel comfortable.

the pictures really give you a good idea of what you're looking for. It's one thing to say "look for bolts with wires running into them" but another thing completely to see a picture of the real deal.

It's a pretty good size to learn on but you'll probably get bored pretty quick and want something bigger. P.S. that reminds me I got a 2003 Harley Sporster chopper for sale, any northern californians out there?
