I'm thinking of buying one, for the summer season.  I can handle the licensing thing on my own so what I'm here to ask is:

Should I get a learner bike first?  I've been told that you'll generally lay the bike down a few times in your first year... I've ridden dirt bikes up to 150 or 200cc (can't remember) so I'm familiar with off road riding...

How many cc should I be looking for?

What should I know when buying a bike?

What's insurance like (I'm in Canada)?

I'm open to comments for or against bikes as well

If you have the money consider a Ducatti :drooling:

If youre leaning towards the more afordable side, suzuki has a good selection... Honda cruisers kickass in my opinion... Go for something 6 speed... Youre ready for it... Trust me, theres nothing worse than getting stuck with a 'learners bike'

Insurance don't know. But if you get a street bike the Yamaha R6 is the way to go. It is a 600cc. They are easy to ride and suupppeeeerrrrrrrr fast.

Dont buy a new bike. im a little bit leniant on cc's.. i think a 600cc sport bike is fine if you understand and respect the power that you will be dealing with. what kind of bike do you want a full on sport bike with fairing, a naked sport bike, cruiser, hog?

I dont know what you mean by you handling the liscence on your own but i HIGHLY recomend that you take a motorcyle saftey course. I dont know what its called in canada but here its MSF

Don't start out small, you'll outgrow it fast and regret it. The 600cc class bikes are fun and nimble (Honda F4i) but if you plan to be riding 40+ miles a day, the cramped position can get to you. Standard bikes are great because they have an upright seating position, and the handlebars are easily within reach. Check out the Honda Nighthawk 750--an extremely affordable, good first bike with decent power. Dirt cheap to insure as well. Buy used privately, there's no reason to buy a bike fresh from the dealer unless you're swimming in cash and can't decide what to do with it all. Avoid cruisers unless you want to be lugging around some 700 LB. behemoth. Not fun, and not my style, but some people dig the cruiser scene (no thanks). Honda/Yamaha/Suzuki/Kawasaki are equal in reliability nowadays, there's very little difference between the jap manufacturers. Go with them or German (BMW) but buying an American bike is not recommended.

Not sure on Canada, but in the U.S. we have a weekend rider safety course that you can take (optional) that teaches you some skills as a newbie moto rider that might keep you alive out there. That, and you get an insurance break if you passed the course. Highly recommend you take a street rider course, even if you rode dirt. I thought the rider course was corny, but it was so good I ended up taking the advanced. The stuff can save your life, it has mine.

In case you might be interested in my opinion, a motorcycle is a very personal type of item and mode of transportation as well as being one of the finest senses of freedom, thrill of risk (just putting yourself on one in traffic is risk enough) and a giver of the realization that you completely control your destiny as you ride. It is a fun, rewarding and mentally therapeutic activity all in one.

Peoples' preferences of bikes will vary with as many people as there are to answer and as many bikes as there are to choose from.

It really comes down to how comfortable you want to be, how fast you want to go, how deep you want to be able to lean into the twisties and what you expect to bring you the most pleasure as eye candy when you admire your bike from afar.

It's a personal decision you need to make for yourself, I think.

Other things to consider are whether you want a bike that can easily and comfortably carry two people and some baggage or if it'll only be required to haul yourself alone.

I suggest going and sitting on all kinds of bikes (they all have a slightly or majorly different feel from each other) and get a feel for the weight, the balance, your position while sitting and in stance (when stradling the bike, you should be able to flat foot it) (both feet flat on the ground) check your comfort and the positioning of controls as compared to where you'd like them to be, etc.

Lastly, consider the looks of the bike and be sure that it makes you a bit excited just anticipating the ride.

My Vmax is for sale, but I wouldn't consider that type of sheer muscle-bike to be one for a beginner.  We all want you to be with us, alive and well, come autumn.

Good luck in your search.

do you live in a big metropolitan area? if so, a scooter might serve your needs just fine while being a lot cheaper and safer to boot.

Go to several dealerships and pretend to be very interested in purchasiong a new or used bike at each one. Sit on as many bikes as you can that appeal to you.

Or, go buy a Vespa scooter, they're kinda trendy now.

ah ok, in that case a bigger bike would probably suit you better. the only bike i've ridden on that made a big impression on me was a Ducati 9something - beautiful bike, but way too big for a person of my stature.

well i would get a cruiser exclusively... I dont know much about street bikes. But for cruisers I talked to my dad and he said to get something around 600-800 cc and it will have enough kick to keep me occupied for a while but not be too much either.

hehe the xerox replica is like 30 grand. forget about that one waay too much power .. or any ducati for a first bike if you drop them=lots of money.

sounds like you want something comfortable? newer race replicas are very uncomforable. the honda cbr600f4i has a banana seat if you want a sport bike thats what i would get honda reliability and toughness.stunters use them cause they dont fall apart when you drop them like yamahas and suzukis.

if you want a naked sport bike then the suzuki sv650 is the one i would get.

The side fairings alone on Ducatis bikes cost $2,000 that would really suck droping one. and maintiance is much more than a jap bike

Ducati can be a pain in the neck to own.  Not quite up to par with the other imports for reliability, harder to get serviced, and expensive when service time does come.

I think Buckwheat called it right on.  Check out the Suzuki sv650 or the sv650s; v-twin power, reliable, tons of fun, and cheap.  The "s" adds a mini fairing and slightly more aggressive riding position.  Awesome commuter bike too.  Ok, I'll get out of your thread now.

I'm looking to get a bike in the near future, too. As I have until recently had zero interest in motorcycles I have very little knowledge of them (other than from a technical pov). Hopefully some of you who know what they're talking about can give me an idea or two of what to look for

I'm looking for something purely for transportation, so I don't really care about looks or anything fancy. It will also be my primary transportation, other than a bicycle (I don't have a car or license for one). I know enough about small engines to do most of the repair work myself, so I'll also want something that doesn't have any fancy or hard-to-find parts.

It'll definitely be a used bike, and probably one of the cheaper ones I can find.

I think I want a classic style street bike. No sport bikes or cruisers. I'm not very tall, only 5'7, so I don't want anything huge that I'll have to tiptoe on. Also not very large, 120 pounds, so nothing too heavy. Speed isn't a big deal to me, but I don't want something slow. What is a good cc range to look for?

Any tips are much appreciated!!

Trendal- the "old standby" for what you described is a Kawasaki Ninja. 250 or 500. I'd stay away from the 636, even though it looks a lot sharper, it's a beast if you don't feel totally comfortable on the bike. You can get a used 250 for under 2k, but make sure you get one newer than 1996. For commuting, if you feel you can handle it I'd recommend the 500, if only because it has a bit extra power on tap in case you need to pull away from a tailgater or pass someone at highway speed.

I'm looking to get a ninja 250 this summer too. I know it doesn't go much faster than 75mph, but that's fine when all the back roads max out at 50mph.

I'm 5'9" 150.

I plan on getting a honda 250 rebel. you can get them hella cheap used.

I know alot of people don't like the bike, but personally like the styling.
plus I've had friends who owned them and never had a complaint.
they are nto fast but, that's not what I'm looking for.
I just want to cruise.

an R6 is WAY too fast for a first bike. They are rated at 133hp, which is more power than most econoboxes.

I would reccomend looking at the GS500 if I were you, they're plenty fast but not quite as crazy as an R6. They are also cheap and easy to work on.

Look into the nighthawk 250 too or the nighthawk 750 if you plan to do highway.I personally would not go on to a highway with a rebel/nighthawk 250 for the city 250's are great but i drove a rebel 250 in my msf class and it would actually be dangerous in the highway. Poor brakes/suspension for highway speeds and no power to get out of the way.

Yeah I was just looking at the rebel 250 and it seems just a bit under power for what I want.

I'll take a look at the nighthawk 750.

whatever they are called they are death machines...I know i would try and see how fast I could get the fucker to go and i would get into a wreck at 130 MPH + and die. I am more of a laid back person compared to the way i used to be. Being in your mid-thirties will make you that way.

I agree w/ everyone that says to not get a "learner's bike" the first time I ever rode a motorcycle was my uncle's honda st1300, something like 1100 cc's, that was a big bike, I rode dirtbikes for a lil while with friends but never owned one and a couple summers ago I got a Suzuki GSX-R, I've torn ducati's assholes open with that bike, it's 900 cc's plus I installed a fogger 150 shot of Nitrice...one insane bike, I've forced cops to let me go on highways before cuz they couldn't keep up.

Aw burn :frown:

I've got the opposite problem - my gf thinks me getting a bike is a great idea so she can ride around on it with me...but I'll be pretty damn paranoid about having her on there.

One of the reasons I don't drive cars is so I don't have to put anyone else's life on the line :smirk:

I'm thinking of buying one, for the summer season.  I can handle the licensing thing on my own so what I'm here to ask is:

Should I get a learner bike first?  I've been told that you'll generally lay the bike down a few times in your first year... I've ridden dirt bikes up to 150 or 200cc (can't remember) so I'm familiar with off road riding...

How many cc should I be looking for?

What should I know when buying a bike?

What's insurance like (I'm in Canada)?

I'm open to comments for or against bikes as well

Bikes kick ass.  get like a 600 or 700 cc.  1200 would kick your ass.
Hell my 600 would go up on its back tire all the way threw third gear, thats not saying much though.

Inevitably your going to fall, your bike is going to get dented, scratched, and bent.

If you like dirt bikes, get an Enduro.  My favorite is the Honda XR 600.  Its a dirt bike that doesnt mind going 100 down a free way one bit as long as you get the on/off road tires.

License???  who the hell neads that?!?!  Insurance costs a buck fitty.  I dunno i got insurance last year and they never even sent me a bill.  I got pulled over a few times and it said i had insurance so hell yeah!

btw your gonna kill your self.

The argument of sport bikes being more dangerous than a cruiser is not backed by any factual information, it's just a misconception. I've been riding sportbikes aggressively for several years, and in my opinion, cruisers are more dangerous.

Cruisers are generally overweight, underpowered, have weaker brakes + suspension, and the riders are usually middle aged men just getting into riding with very little experience. Poor brakes + poor riders+ poor acceleration + heavy ass cruiser = dangerous.

Every other vehicle on the road is just as dangerous as a sportbike if the operator is incompetent.

I think mental maturity and a good awarness and knowledge is the key to riding any type of bike. Blame the carpenter not his tools. The quality of the tools are only that of the one that uses them.

Sports bikes are for handeling at high speeds thats the purpose of its being.

Chopers are for laying back and being like yeah whats up im checking you out checking me out.

Cruisers are self explanitory.

Enduros are for the guy that likes to mix it up, you can book down a highway, you can cruise along rivers, you can ride it on trails and train tracks.

I just got my M1 learners permit today.

I'll be enrolling in a course soon because my learner's permit expires in 90 days.
Once I complete the course, I'll be allowed to ride on the highways and with passengers; the only limitation being 0 blood alcohol until 2 years elapses.

So my question has turned to this.

Body Armor.  What do you wear?

ABS? Foam? or just a thick hide & helmet?

Thanks

ps: i'm looking at the sv650s now holydiver!

There fun, but then agian we have snow here so winters it would just sit there............unless you travel and ride it,

But

Dirtbikes are the best......i ride them in snow and everything, i love them

ez to get away from the police too

Congrats on the permit, that's awesome.   I've been riding enduros the past few weeks, and it feels great to be back in the swing--few things compare riding a bike you really love.  I PM'd you my opinion of that particular bike up for auction, and the SV650S will treat you right...v-twin power.

Helmet:  Best bang for the buck as far as comfort/looks/safety/economy that I've found is HJC Helmets  These are DOT and SNELL certified, about as good as you can get.  No need to spend $500 on a pimped helmet, a good CL-14 from HJC is fine.

Gloves:  Leather or high quality synthetic, something to hold up when you go slide on pavement.

Boots:  Leather or synthetic boot that covers your ankle, again, the sliding thing.  Tennis shoes are worthless, may as well be wearing flip flops.

Coat:  A well-made riding jacket with protective armor.  Recommend:Firstgear

Legs:  Jeans at the minimum, but actual armored riding pants are best (although I've slacked and just go with jeans anymore).

All this might seem excessive, but these are really wise investments to make for yourself.  All it takes is seeing a riding buddy go down hard one time, skin ground down to the bone...ugly.  Protect yourself, because a fall at any speed will not be kind.

good post! good gloves are a must! get some nice leather ones, thick. boots i find unnecessary, but a good leather coat is a must!! the kevlar just doesnt seem to do... (my kevlar tore open...). and for your legs jeans are fine (they held better than my kevlar jacket!).

alright boys and girls, I just off the phone with my insurance company.

They want me to pay $8000/year to insure a 2005 sv650, blue book valued at $5000.  $4000 of that is personal injury.......and the 8000 doesn't even include collision!

Any other ideas? 8k fucking..... flabergasting... I don't even know the fucking word for it....

$8000???? That's got to be a mistake. You could insure a supercar for less than that. Are you sure it wasn't 800 or 80? I was quoted $150/six months for insurance with the works on a ninja 500. I know the 650 is the next class up but even still...

WTF?!!!

Call me foolish, but I don't even have my Harley covered for collision or fire/theft. Just liability and bodily injury and it's only
$343 a year. Add collision & fire/theft (comprehensive) and it goes to $865 a year. Book on my Road King is $15,200 last time I checked.

I think your agent is screwing you.

I made sure before I hung up the phone, asked for a complete breakdown of why.

I'm 22 and a male, and for whatever reason, her insurance system calls the sv650 a SUPER SPORT.

I was like "wtf are you talking about, it's 650cc"

she said "I guess it's a light bike"

I'm so fucking steamed right now. This is a huge roadblock for me.
Also, consider that Canadian insurance (specifically Ontario's no fault insurance) is highway robbery. They make billion dollar profits, then hike premiums with nobody to hold them accountable.

Any other bike suggestions that might qualify me for a simple street bike? not this super sport business?

Oh and lastly, insurance covers 7 years of drivers abstract, and 6 years ago, when I was 16, I crashed my parents minivan.

Were you insured/of legal driving status when you crashed? That'll raise prices but that rate you were quoted is simply absurd. Even people who have had their licenses revoked for multiple DUI's don't get rates like that. Granted I know nothing about the Ontario system, I still think someone was shooting for the moon on that one.

If you're looking for a similar bike, try what I have- 2002 Kawasaki Ninja 500. The 500 is generally not considered a sport or super sport, since it rides more like a standard, and the rates are much lower than the next step up (Ninja 636 or similar). Plus it's a pretty solid and fun bike.

What I meant was, nobody can charge more than a motorcycle is worth (over $4000) for one year of insurance. No way, because nobody would pay it.
Theres been a mistake. You just have to call around and find someone who knows what they're talking about.

I wasn't saying you'd pay it, or that you were out of your mind.

that's a shame about the exorbitant insurance prices, especially on the sv. if they're classifying the sv as supersport, i'd hate to see what they're classifying gsxr 1k's and r1's as... or how much they're charging.

as for the ninja 250/500... they're not bad bikes but the technology is seriously outdated. an sv of similar year will be a much more satisfying bike in every way.

i think you're on the right track with the sv. i have 3 friends who between them own every model in the sv line (650s, 650 naked, and 1000s). i've ridden all of them and they're stellar bikes. the 650 seems an ideal learner bike, they handle wonderfully, have a helathy amount of torque thanks to the v-twin, and at the same time won't be as unforgiving as the inline 600's if you grab a bit too much throttle at the wrong moment. plus, if you get the naked version you won't have much to fix when it goes down.

i can't fathom why insurance would cost you so much, i have an atrocious driving record (mostly speeding tickets....) and i was quoted a little more than 200/mo on my bike, which is a fully faired inline 6.

personally, i hold the title to my bike and choose not to insure it. if i had financed it, that would be another story, but where i live you're not required by law to carry insurance on a motorcycle and i'm a broke-ass student, so i don't. i know that i can repair the standard low-side damage on my own, and i doubt that if i total it i'll be in good enough shape to concern myself much with the costs of repair. more than anything, i'd like theft coverage because they're so easy to pick up and toss in the back of a truck... i lock mine to something with a big ass cable and hope for the best.

as for riding gear, that's the one area that i'll really stress it's important to not skimp on.

get a good snell approved helmet, i own an AGV that i've been very happy with.... HJC's newer lids are of better quality than the old ones, same goes for the newer KBC's (very nice imo). around $300 US should get you in a nice lid, make sure to try on several as different manufacturers and lines cater to different shaped heads.

as for pricey helmets.... when i have the cash together, i'm going to go out and spend $600 or so on a Suomy or a nice Arai, and i don't consider it a waste in the least: you get what you pay for in comfort, lightweight materials, good venting, and most of all safety... how much is your head worth to you?

a good leather jacket w/ hard armor is a must too. dainese, alpinestars, teknics, spidi, and icon all make a nice product and are listed in descending price order. buy and wear a good set of gloves too, road rash on your hands doesn't seem like fun.

as far as footwear it's the one thing i slack on. i usually just wear a pair of suede/leather shoes. boots are a good idea, though.

hope this helps, good luck finding a bike.

alright,

After more digging around, it seems like the magic number is 500cc, above which insurance companies begin charging men under 25 through the ass.

I'd like more suggestions on bikes? the ninja ex500 would cost 2200 to insure for a year, as an example.

any ideas for something at 500cc?

alright,

After more digging around, it seems like the magic number is 500cc, above which insurance companies begin charging men under 25 through the ass.

I'd like more suggestions on bikes? the ninja ex500 would cost 2200 to insure for a year, as an example.

any ideas for something at 500cc?

Maybe the Ducati monster 620 will not be classified as a sport bike but they are nice real nice. Suzuki gs500 2004 and up are like the ex500. Some SuperMotos are in the 550 range.

the Ducati monster 620 is 618cc and no Ducati bike is under 600cc's.

yeah but if it's not classified as a sport bike or a high risk bike by his insurance company then what does it matter. the qoutes i got for a Ducati 749 where cheaper than for my Cbr00rr because Ducati's are crashed less. And a GSXR600 might cost more than my bike because its the choice bikes of squids and theivs also.I remember reading somewhere that Hayabusas have a 30 day crash expectancy by some insurance companies:crazy:

im only 21 now. i live in california where its a law to have insurance. i says to myself i says "look, your 18 and on a ninja. your going to get raped for tax"  especially cause my parents had nothing to do with it. so i never bothered to even get a liscense. i got stopped one time randomly as im starting my bike, i wasnt even doing anything illegal. they thought i was somebody else. luckily, i didnt have anything illegal (but i did have a pot growing book, pruners, and fertilizer lol), but i got taxed like $900. moral of the story: "get the fucking insurance"  ~~>  :mrt:

Insurance companies have their heads up their asses!

My Road King has a 1450cc motor and there are 475cc 2-strokes that would blow it off so bad it'd look like it was standing still!

To go by motor displacement as a guide for rates is totally rediculous!

Hell yeah...it's time to burn some motherfuckin' rice.

P.S. Are you tentatively going to pay $20,000 a year in insurance?

I found a quote for 1,800, so yeah....

that was the best I could find.

I'm 22 and a male. I might as well drink poison and light myself on fire before I ride, nothing can make me worse in the eyes of the insurance companies.

I'm definately looking forward to getting into this.

He's not tied up at all... He's held lightly by a bungee-net and loves riding on the bike, yes.

He adores the attention and the vibration is very soothing to him... He sleeps 60% of the time.

I hope when he did that to your bike he did a face plant. Fuck rip offs.
Looks like you got it back in decent shape though.

It's amazing how fast he's growing... The breeder said not to feed him Iam's food because it makes them grow
too fast, so I'm only using approved food and he still is growing way fast.... When he outgrows the milk crate,
I'll be bummed... It'll be time to buy a sidecar.

He actually likes wearing his Doggles™ ( http://www.doggles.com ) ...Way too cute.

When he's in a sidecar, I'll get him a leather skull cap, larger Doggles™ and a rebel flag bandana... He'll be awesomely cool.
