honey does wonders

Something for you to try. Now I know we have all heard the "mix honey in with the water" deal and that seems to work just fine. I have had major success with that. But I got to thinking the other day when I was casing if mixing some honey with warm water and then misting it over the crumbled up cakes before covering with the soil mixture. Let me tell you, it worked like a charm. I even got a few monsters out of it. Not sure if it was due to the honey or just genetics but either way I was very pleased. i'll try to post a pic of them on this.

Yeah I asked a question the other day about adding Karo to my popcorn while it was boiling and someone said they had done it in their substrate and it seemed to help. I never heard of doing it your way, though I might have to try it considering it seems to have helped you. I bet honey in some ways is better than Karo if shrooms can absorb the nutrients in honey. Honey is a rich, perfect food with lots of vitamins and amino acids. I hear that most people prefer Karo over honey. Hmmm maybe Karo has some or more of the nutrition that Honey has. I'll have to try to find out what nutrients are in Karo because that sort of stuff is not contained in the nutrition facts. Does any one know exactly what nutrients in Honey that shrooms may be able to absorb?

I will say one thing about Karo syup. I used that before i used honey and i've never had more problems with molds and trech contamination. i started using honey and the contamination went wayyyy down so i would suggest honey over karo anyday.

karo is just corn syrup,
which is corn sugar and water.
corn sugar = dextrose.
so karo is just dextrose disolved in water with a few preservatives, vanilla, etc. mixed in.
honey is a much more chemically complex substance,
varying considerably depending on where/when it was 'made'.

lamblancer: I only misted it with honey once. After I put my verm. in my tray, about an inch, and then I misted it down lightly. The trick is not to put too much on there. I should already be moist due to the water used to give it some moisture. I crumbled up my cakes on it and misted them maybe three times afterwhich I covered them up with my soil mixture. I Got away from using regular potting soil because I was having too many mold problems with it. The wood used in the mixture seemed to be the cause of it because it was covered with contamination before anything else. I switched to a succlulent mixture for cacti and such and that seemed to work very well. Didn't have near/none of the problems I had before. On my current project I'm using an African Violet mixture found at Lowes for about two dollars or so. I just cased it last night so I won't see any signs of contam. for at least another three to four days. I'm hoping to get some monsters again but it's not looking very good right now. Out of fourteen jars I innoculated only one, maybe two, are going to be useable. The rest developed a green mold in them that I'm thinking was due to contamination during the homemade spore syringe I made. I guess the tools used wern't as clean as I would have hoped they would be. But there is always tomorrow right? hope that answers your question and maybe adds a little more.
