Good books or guides on meditation.

Being on a break from psychedelics has not only been cleansing, but has allowed me to greatly re-prioritize my life a bit. But I feel that lately, my life has been lacking something. I think it's the insight that psychedelics were giving me.. So I've recently become very interested in natural ways to expand the mind, and experience the psychedelic experience; through meditation.

The problem is, there's a shitload of information out there on this subject, and countless "beginner's guides" to meditation.. and each method appears to take a great deal of time to learn. I don't mind spending a lot of time learning how to get into meditation, I just don't wanna spend a lot of time learning the WRONG way to get into meditation.

So from those of you with a lot of experience in meditation, can you point me in the direction of some books, guides or methods of meditation?

I'll give +5 :mushroom2:'s for good honest suggestions. It would also be pretty beneficial if you could tell me a little bit about your personal experiences with meditation :smile:

The best book I've read on meditation is:

"Teach Yourself To Meditate: Over 20 simple exercises for peace, health & clarity of mind: Over 20 Exercises for Peace, Health and Clarity of Mind"
by Eric Harrison

It gets to the core of what meditation is without attaching a load of dogma or spiritual stipulations. It covers pretty much all the main types of meditation and sets you up to progress ahead. All it asks is 15 minutes a day for a couple of months.

This is the only book I suggest to anyone who is interested in starting to meditate.

I've been meditating on and off since I was around 15 (I'm in my 30s now.) When I meditate regularly everything is better. I tend not to get caught up in petty dramas, my mind feels clean and clear and my body feels good.
I have issues maintaining a long term meditation practice due to crappy sleeping habits. I tend to err on the side of massive sleep deprivation, so during periods of little sleep, meditation isn't something I can do well. It is something I wish I could maintain indefinitely though.

Im no expert on meditation. The book im going to suggest isnt specifically a meditation book, although it is. Meditation is quieting the mind. I cant say this book changed my life, because psychedelics and life did that :cool:

But it did reinforce alot of thoughts i have. It also changed the way i approach meditation. Now, in a way, my whole day can be a meditation for me... And it usually is, but i let it slip sometimes when this earthly life and daily routine bites backs. Like i said im no expert :smile:

The way I do it is to sit, if you want, and breath in and out through the nose, noticing the breath.

This is the exact kind of reply I was looking for, thanks! I'll definitely check that book out! I was hoping for an almost, "meditating for dummies" book. Your experience of daily clarity is exactly the reason I wish to get into meditation in the first place. I've heard so many times that it's the similar clarity you get after a good trip. I'm excited to get started!

The power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.

Ive studied and practiced meditation techniques over the past 3 years and this book is just awesome..I feel good while I read it.

Tolle has a wonderful approach to writing and his methods are quite different than the conventional techniques offered in most meditation books.

The book that really helped me break through into meditation is called "Turning the Mind into an Ally" by Sakyong Mipham. He does a real good job of not just supplying directions (which many before him have done), but also of examining the common problems everyone has in their practice. It really helped me realize that everyone goes through these same problems and it's all part of the process. Highly recommend.

Lately I've been enjoying "A Gradual Awakening" by Steven Levine. Not sure if it would be best for a beginner though, but maybe.
