Ummm Rap was not mainstream in the early 90s late 80's.. How old are you btw?
Rap was definately more of an underground thing back then, same with what was good hip pop. Take a look at top 40 lists for the 90's, most Rap like NWA, Ice T, etc... never got on those charts.
Some of those artists I listed are more mainstream than others but what is your issue here? Does it bother you or something?
I hired local rap acts for my 18th birthday at a hall I rented out for 200 people, I've seen a ton of the old school rap groups I listed when they came to my city, one of my friends was a successful local rapper, a white one at that who played a lot of clubs here in my city for like 3 years during 89-92.
Yeah, oh yeah that was all mainstream, not.

alot of my homeboys are comin' up in the rap game.. my nigga fred was on that making tbe band 2 show, and this guy i used to work at a barber shop with, Pitbull, is signed to Lil Jon's label. Point is there's still mainstream shit that isn't bad. All the emcee's and groups Thor listed are great, but some of them are just hard for me to listen to anymore, alot of it is so dated that the messages are just kind of lame now. and the beats, while they mave have been good back then, can't compare to some of the slick production today.

I don't know how big a distinction there is between rap and hip hop but if you listen to Alphabet Aerobics by Blackalcious I think you'll realise alot of talent lies in it. Other GREAT hip hop artists include:
