jurassic 5 = worst rap group ever. i'd rather listen to the bling bling shit than listen to a bunch of 30 year old dudes who have nothing better to talk about than now they are real hiphop and everyone else is fake. how can someone listen to hiphop solely about hiphop?

Since Pac died its all gone downhill. The rappers then had meaningful lyrics, original beats.. Nowdays these fake rappers couldnt stand a chance if some artists like pac were around. as long as they get their money they could give 2 shits about their message or the quality of their music.

Same with rock I think, music has been going downhill in general.

tupac wasn't even that great, he's just dead so everyone likes him

There's still lots of good rap, it's just not what gets the most airtime.

Rappers don't have original beats anymore? you're crazy man, the only thing good about modern mainstream hiphop is the beats, the neptunes come up with some CRAZY shit, aint nothing wrong with the beats out today. i'm glad they got away from the same old stale sounding shit and moved on to a more techno-y style

I came in a little late to this thread, so to circumvent having to respond to each individual idea you all have given I'll give you my synopsis. Basically I agree with all of you when you say that "rap is crap" yada yada. But ...

Anyone who says that anything isn't a form of art is devoid of the understanding of what the idea of art is.

Yes, rap today has been sold out.

Yes, the artists that appear on the tellie and the radio are puppets to the companies that control them.

Yes, none of them write their own music, and nor do their producers because it's all resampled and remixed until the shit gets old. A few years later, dust off that beat and put the newest pop face on it and BAM! It's a chart topper for the summer.

But ...

If one solitary soul, despite their lacking of common sense and taste, believes this bullshit to be auditorily pleasing ... then it's art to them. Intrinsically, anything created my human hands can defined as a form of art. Your opinion as to the validity of rap as an artform changes nothing.

Now here's where my real point at hand is. If you disagree with me thus far and think I'm a complete ass of a Jack ... read on to redeem me I implore.

RAP IS BULLSHIT ... HIP-HOP IS THE DIVINE LIGHT. BUT! YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HAPPEN UPON HIP-HOP! NO ONE PLAYS HIP-HOP ON THE RADIO! YOU DON'T SEE HIP-HOP ON THE TELLIE! HIP-HOP IS UNDERGROUND!

Or at least that's where the ill shit is. Shall I direct you?

If you read crap books, you could cast doubt over whether writing is an artform. If you look at crap paintings, you may think painting isn't an artform. WIth rap it's slightly harder cos 99.9% of it is shit, but there's good stuff out there. Like Thor said, I reckon the early 90s stuff is best. Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, they have classic albums that any intelligent music fan/critic will be able to appreciate.

My personal favourite is The Low End Theory by Tribe. Awesome. Smoke a fatty then put it on.

honestly, jurassic 5 is so fucking over-rated. that shit is horrid. i enjoy just about every person on your list, def. del/hieroglyphics, and blackalicious, but i think bling bling rap/hiphop does have its place in music, its party music, lil wayne/cash money records, lil jon and the eastside boys, what better music to hear at a party?

and bone thugs n harmony have more talent than alot of rappers and hiphop artists out there. i also like three six mafia but that's just because sometimes i enjoy mindless pissed off music, it has balls.

Clipse is another good modern rap act, sick beats and they don't talk about cash, and instead of just talking about selling coke and shit, they actually convey how they feel about it and it gets to them after a while. pretty good shit.

Bone is crap .... if you can't do a show without voiceover .... you're crap. My buddy saw them in Boulder and said that they had their lyrics in the background the entire show.

hARDLY ANY RAPPERS ARE RICH. It's almost impossible to make money in rap. A lot of rappers were disappointed with their labels way of paying them. Man, JAh Rule was fresh on Joey Crack's song "WHat's Love Got to do With It." Anyone who thinks Jah Rule wasn't fresh wasn't listening to him. Now he just raps about fucking bitches in the backseat of his Yukon. Rap has really degenerated into a blinded sort of contest about who can be the most qualified. peace out.

Sizzlinj do u seriously think jurrasic 5 sucks, wow that is sad. They are a great group with smart lyrics for once. They have interesting songs and they actually care about how the music sounds instead of a lot of MTV crap rappers. Well thats ur opinion so i won't flame about it. Peace, shroom on.

btw does anyone here like Wu Tang Clan? I havent seen it mentioned and they are fuckin awesome! If you have never listened to their music, download some of their songs and give it a listen, its GOOD shit! I also really like A tribe called quest.
