The Definition of Spirituality
    #1874714 - 09/02/03 03:47 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

spir?i?tu?al ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spr-ch-l)
adj.
1. Of, relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; not tangible or material.

To me (and others in here), spirituality does not incorporate metaphysics (ie. the supernatural). My mind is neither tangible nor material... it is a process that a bodily organ (the brain) goes through. As such, I think this fits well with the primary definition of spirituality.

I think this is a key issue for this forum.

Gee, I thought spirituality is "that which baffles". I did not understand what was happening to me; therefore I had a spiritual experience.

Well, you see, if you assume that the D in Definiton is inserted between spirit and uality, you get Spirit Duality. And this implies that we all have two lives to live. Get it?
Peace.

No, God came down and told me that I wasn't thinking unconventally. It is suspossed to be Spirit Duality BACKWARDS, which gives us God's real, unexposed name. So, here goes:

Y..T..I..L..A..U..D....T..I..R..I..P.. ? computer crashes and fireworks_god dies..:?
Peace.

This, of course, implies that God was trying to kill me (which he suceeded) and that he is still trying to eat Hitler and Saddam's baby..
Peace.

" Of, relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; not tangible or material."

This is exactly why I believe that spiritual beliefs should never be subject to scientific scrutiny unless they have some kind of bearing on the physical world, as science is really more concerned with the material...

However, when someone uses Spirituality as an excuse for some material happening or physical event, (eg- "I can move objects with my mind, because of my spiritual powers") science has free reign to scrutinize the hell out of shit like that.

But it should be noted that supernatural events, by their very nature, are nearly impossible to reproduce on command. Anybody who claims this ability is probably bullshitting. The way I look at supernatural events is, "Hey, they happen sometimes. No one can control them, but they tend to happen to people who are receptive to them more often than people who arent."

And personal, internal experiences (eg- Shroomism's communication with Aliens and astral travel) Simply cannot be objectively investigated because they happen inside one person's mind. I have travelled astrally before, but my journeys never took me to any place like Earth, and I seriously doubt I could project myself to a specific location (like swami's house) for the purpose of independant verification.

I never leave home withou it.

I believe it. Do you confuse sarcasm with intelligence as well?

sar?casm ( P ) Pronunciation Key (s?rkzm)
n.
A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.
The use of sarcasm. See Synonyms at wit1.

I suspect you need sarcasm to make your case.

What exactlly does this have to do with spirituality though I wonder.
Perhaps I stepped into the good ol' boys thread.

To many, being spiritual is an effort to improve one's wellbeing and the wellbeing of others by leading an ethically sound life.

Confounding as it is to materialists, I agree with Adamist.
It can't be defined.

A definition in this case is seeking a handle (read control) on that which cannot be controlled, defined, or confined to a lab for study.
And I'm glad for that.

Sure you can. There are lots of definitions actually. This one works best for me:

spir?it
n.

1.a. The vital principle or animating force within living beings.

define -
1. To state the precise meaning of.
2. To describe the nature or basic qualities of; explain.

Either one of these definitions can be either objective or subjective, but Sclorch's post is titled "THE definition of spirituality". (Which implies some objective definition, which simply doesn't exist in a form that we can express.)

No... there was no emphasis on "the".
You're a smart guy, but your reading comprehension allows you to miss important things like this: To me (and others in here)...

I hope that was merely an error and not a lame attempt at a Straw Sclorch.
