Grind 'em up and mist with water. Shove back in pint jars with filters on top and you can get one more flush as they dry out in the middle where there is still nutrients.

You can also bury them outside in potting soil or garden loam and sometimes get another good flush.

You can use them to inoculate some straw & dung outdoors.
I often get additional fruits when I dump spent casings in my garden.

That's an excellent idea that I never even considered. It would be much more effective than dunking; which I believe to not fully penetrate an older cake with very thick mycelium coverage. Depending on what time of the year it is, you can put them outside with some straw and manure, and get a good patch going. Water it every day and you will be surprised.

Others have said they use them for spawn and make casings, but I find that older, spent cakes are poor candidates for spawn. They easily contaminate (due to being "exposed" for lengths of time), and the older mycelium is usually weaker when it comes to growth speed, strength, and recovery time. You can try it; you have nothing to lose really. But, I say go for an outdoor patch if you still have time in your area. It?s getting cooler in northern climates, and not really the best time to start a patch. Or you could try the novel idea posted by Swami, it sounds like a wonderful technique that would most likely work very well. I would try it if I grew cakes...

Hey, how is this advanced anyway?
