Are you sure thats not just new growth?

Only been growing cactus for a few years... Sun burn seems to be not fatal to large cactus... Put it in the shade... Water it... See how bad it is...

Burn one of mine it seems each year...

Peace

No,the whole cacti got black in a day or so,the green that you see is what remained of it! :S

Is the black soft to the touch? It depends how long the exposure was as to whether it will pull through. If it is soft like mush you might be able to save that green growth but I wouldn't cut anything without giving it a chance to recover.

I think black color not indicates sunburn..
From the other hand, some direct sun is not bad for trichocereus, though
if you got him long time now, and now is the first day you exposure him,
on the sun, it might be stress.
On my lophophoras (they dont like that much direct sun) i give them at least 2 hours of direct light, so it looks difficult to me, to be a sunburn..

It turned black after it was exposed to light, that's why I guesst it was burned.

It looks more likely to me, that there is no sunburn, if you consider that the discoloration, spreed after you take away the cactus from sun.

You dont loose much if you cheek the roots though, just 2 weeks without growth.

I dont have that much knowledge, to give you specific answer..sorry!

I have experienced some random cactus sudden deaths or they turn to mush when I get them out of greenhouse to indoors or expose them to direct sunlight long time by taking cactus from indoors to outdoors or so.

I don't know what it was but one of my ortegocactus macdougallii goes another side just black with stock where it was as scion. However, the graft turned black from another side when I get it to indoors and it was side what has got direct sun. Shady side of the cactus was fine. It was like half black mush and half normal and over long time it just rotted.

..and this happened after I bring the cactus from greenhouse at direct sunlight to indoors in to very shady place. It's turns black from side where sun has been shine just in one night. That cactus was moved from very bright to very shady place where it gets only some random light from window. Don't know what it was cause it was very fine and in one night it turns to sick cactus.. Later the cactus just rotted, stock and scion. I think in my case the cactus suffers somekind of shock. I should have take pics from that. It's very nice and fine from another side and another side was deep black and purple. Later on it stays alive long time before rot later kill the cactus, scion and stock.

I think that san pedro in picture has suffered very dramatic change of light levels and temperatures and someway shocked or something? That kind of sudden black has happened me with tricho stock and ortegocactus macdougalii scion. They were just get black from the side where sun shines and another side was healthy until scion and stock just died weeks later to rot.

Tell me more about this. What is the time when you moved your cactus to sun? Does your cactus has been indoors at poor light and then you dramatically get it outdoors to get full mid-day sun? Does this happened over night?

In my case time was about hour or two after noon. The cactus was very fine and healthy and growing.. I moved it shady indoors from hot sun and forget it to table. At morning it was like "burned" by sun but this happened like I said cause of very dramatic change of environment and only one side of it suffers.

It would be help more if you tell exactly what happened and where the cactus has been before you moved it to sun or so. It seems just similar to my problem and with me. Do you make very suddenly dramatically change to environment to cactus? I'm interested to know cause I have experienced opposite by getting cactus indoors from greenhouse where it has been weeks and sudden death occurs when I change environment and temperatures with light intensity too quickly. Don't have found reason for this but now I am very carefully when I move the cactus away from greenhouse and so on.

I would want to hear more about details what causes this accident? However, I don't think I can help you rescue your cactus but would be nice to read exactly what happened?

IF you have kept this cactus at indoors or windowsill.. Do not never ever let them get baked by sun accidentally and suddenly. Even shade at outdoors are very strong light level compared to windowsill and so on. This is interesting cause I have seen similar cases just because sudden and dramatic changes of cactus environment.

If you want some better answers, tell us where the cactus has been before you moved it. Windowsill, under lights or at very shade? How long it has been there? Also time periods and so on are very good information to know. Your posts are like one sentence without information about important things around this. We only know "you moved cactus to light" ....from where? outdoors shady or from indoors windowsill or from under lights? Tell us before and after with time periods so it helps much more to us to know what is really happened. Like you don't have said where this cactus has been before you exposed it to light?

My small torches burned :-(

They were very green from almost no sun, then in direct sun

then they bent 90 degrees and turned completely white and died :frown:

so be careful about full sun if they are not used to it / not large enough, mine were only 1/2 - 1" but 1½ year old

one of them died, the other one I might be able to save, it is 100% white on one side of the cactus and green on the other side, but feels a bit soft now, not sure it will survive :-(

I think you gotta adapt them to the sun
mine were used to no sun
when you adapt them they change shade it seems, just don't adapt them too quickly

Hey,I have my cacti always here as u can see in this pic,it doesn't get direct sunlight in this position,so I've decided to move it next to the window to get some light,it was exposed to full sunligt for 3h or so,first small black dots appeard,I've noticed them in the evning when I got home, the next they the whole new grown cacti was black.I don't think there's anything wrong with the roots since the rest of the cacti is fine.

Dude, seriously.. cut that black part away and for real. Give it location where it can get sun all the time. Do you really keep cactus in the house without giving it windowsill light or what? seems your cactus has suffered long time of the lack of light.

Am I understand right? You have kept your san pedro literally at the middle of house without no direct light? I mean separately direct light and direct sunlight.

Seems you keep your cactus at place where it should not be. Cut it and give it sun at window. My trichos get straight sun before noon till evening and I have also metal halide light giving 15hours light more to be sure they are not etiolate.

...You have kept cactus at some corner of your house where are no literally light at all? ..if so, no wonder it has been shocked from straight sunlight from window.

Seems you have kept your san pedro like some lifeless statue at place where are no real light at all?

It's commonly known that even in the wild or peoples garden cactus what keeps standing all year around at same spot got every spring sunburns, well.. not maybe every spring but if it's sunny enough it's not uncommon for trichocereus to get some burns after winter dormancy, however it's quite minor.

There is very good example of serious sunburn of san pedro seedling when I was kept it all winter and spring at bad light and put it into greenhouse to full sun.:awesome:

Also trichocereus pasacana suffered from top cause of spring time sun after dark winter:

It's easy to see that skin of the cactus just dies and so on. Small cacti still spent their first years at quite shady place and when they are old and long enough, they are starting to get direct sun.

San pedro and others don't necessary even need the direct sun if they are otherwise at bright spot in greenhouse or outdoors. If looking up to the sky, there is large blue bright area giving light to plants regardless are you at shade or not.
I remember I have seen picture from california where is decades old san pedro and there was some writing that it is planted to shade of large tree so the sun will not burn it and it was a massive and beautiful cactus only getting barely sun at late evening and early morning before tree starts to shade it.

Many don't realize the power of sun. I have seen that it's very powerful to greenhouse even I am very far away at north and sun radiance are not so intensive than most of the places in the world. Actually I have sunburned cactus with professional greenhouse lights so why not sun can't burn the cacti?

Textbook case of sunburn there. I couldn't see it properly in the first pictures.

Cut the burnt column away, let the cut callus and then introduce it to stronger light slowly. The new growth that'll emerge will be used to the light and will grow fatter and a deeper Green than the one that was burnt.

My cactus wasn't just lying there like a statue,I was moving it for the past 4months on sunny spots in my apartmet almost everyday,It's the middle of a heat wave here and I think that was the problem.
