I don't know. Im thinking hes got a reason. Maybe a similar reason as to why he went to HK and then
dropped the info that the US spies on the Chinese before he left.

Russia is not his final destination.

"were going to have to make some choices as a society"

Does that sound like the statement of a president who is trying to defend the NSA program? where's the fear mongering?

He won't come out against government surveillance, because that is the republican's job. He is holding out a carrot in front of them, trying to lead them towards responsible governance by giving them something to attack him on that he wants to be debated. Obama doesn't have to run for re-election, dropping a few points in the polls doesn't mean much to him, and this will all have blown over by the time midterm elections come around.

I highly doubt they are going to exercise this power over potheads, at least not any time soon. 50 years? Maybe. The reason is, they've been ignoring the constitution, waging war without declaring it, monitoring the entire nation without warrants or probably cause, and they get away with it because no one really cares, everyone is too comfortable. However, if they began busting potheads and things like that, people would start not being cool with all this corruption, and it wouldn't be so easy to get away with. That being said, this is a step towards authoritarian dictatorship. The people cannot be expected to be the ones who control the government, that is what the constitution is for, and without that, we're fucked. Most people don't even know what the constitution says.

The good thing is that many people DO care about this right now. Just not nearly enough. And then
of course you have the idiots who WANT this for the sake of national security. Bunch of scared little

It's a matter of comfort man.
Some people live in the matrix the US has created and some people would rather choose to live within this matrix than give a fuck about the future generations.

Do what little(or great) good you can in this life.

If you are a violent killing machine, go overseas and die for your flag.

If you are a pacifist, find a niche in the comfortable society the "crazy soldier people" have made possible for you.

1.  My argument against the idiot class is that data-mining is clearly not unconstitutional.  The phone company knows who you called, for fuck's sake.  Are they acting unconstitutionally?
2.  At no point have I argued that this is effective.  In fact I have stated that if it is useless we should stop wasting the obviously enormous amount of money spent on it.

Potheads getting busted?  At what point are you guys going to embrace the fact that you are utterly insignificant?

This has nothing to do with me being personally scared of being monitored by the government, it has everything to do with them blatantly ignoring the constitution, which states that

"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

If the phone company has my records, so be it, it is between me and the company, we are private parties. But it is an invasion of privacy both for that company and for me if the information is monitored without warrant. Even if it is only "metadata".

If the constitution and law does not rule, then people rule, and that is not good. I am NOT in favour of rule of the people, I am in favour of the people setting up a system that will rule them after it has been installed. If they don't like it, they can change it, but they CANNOT SIMPLY IGNORE IT!

Yes, I am. Are you implying that this is an absurd think to be frustrated at? I've got news for you, its not! So many people are so disillusioned these days they forget that rule of law existed for hundreds of years before this military industrial complex was formed. Change the laws if you want, but don't ignore them, or else it is a person who rules, not a law, which is above all people, even the rulers. Change the law, change the constitution, if that is what the people want, but do not simply ignore it, only the law should rule, not individuals!

When exactly was this mythical time before corruption and militarism existed in American politics? Before the Japanese were rounded up in internment camps? Before Lincoln suspended habeas corpus?

I hear this all the time. And it pisses me off.

Everyone knows that both parties are financed by the same people, but that is how politics have always been in this country. Just because they are beholden to these elites does not mean their differences are not real. They say radically different things, and rhetoric matters. Elections matter.

Democracy works.
