Fan for glovebox..
    #1844559 - 08/23/03 10:59 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I had a similar thread to this before, but no one posted any replies.

I am looking for a fan for my glovebox. How many CFMs does it need to be to pass through a hepa filter with enough force to properly work as a pressure glovebox (almost a sort of hepa hood). I am not too good at math - what is the static pressure of the average hepa filter? How much would a good fan cost?

I am not sure of a complete answer to your question, in exact CFM requirements. I think it would depend on the filter in question, and how much of that air you would like to pump through.

You need a fan that can push air with a large amount of force (pressure). HEPA filters are very fine, and it takes quite a bit of effort to move air through them at an acceptable rate. Blower and squirrel cage type fans would be the type you would want. Your average computer fan and the like would not really be strong enough for this type of filter (although some of them can be quite powerful and could be used, especially in multiples). Also, I am not sure if you have already purchased a filter, but look for one that has a large surface area, this will allow more airflow, with a less powerful fan.

You really don't need very much airflow for a glovebox. As long as clean air is introduced before you begin working, then it will work fine.

Hmm well I found this on ebay

Bearing System: Sleeve
Voltage: 100-125 VAC
Frrq.: 50/60 Hz
Current: 0.60 A
Power: 47/41 W
Speed: 2700/3000 RPM
Noise: 51/55 dBA
Air Movement: 180 cfm
Static Pressure:11.3/13.0 mmH2O

Would that do?

Honestly, I cannot answer that. It will move air through a HEPA filter, but at what rate, I do not know.

SO is that 180cfm=cubic feet per minute? like that seems like a pretty heavy duty fan goin on there. but then again it is only aorund 45 watt power consumption...sooooo yeah i guess i am another dead end for you except that you might want to try and find out what cfm stands for...might give you a better idea.

CFM = Cubic Feet per Minute yes.

But, the fan will not move 180 CFM through a HEPA filter as it is a serious restriction. I think pretty much any fan will work to an extent, but you should get a decently powerful one. It does not really need to move large volumes of air, but its pressure potential needs to be decent. Again, I think this is highly filter dependant.

In that case could anyone link me to somewhere where I can purchase an apporpriate hepa filter?

You can buy filters at any big chain department store such as Wal-mart. These are replacement filters used in HEAP units. Look for one that is shaped to your liking, and has good surface area. There really is no need to get technical with the fan and filters. Just get a fan that pumps out decent airflow, and a filter that is large in size. You are more likely over-do it and have a flow hood with gloves attached, than have a glove box that does not flow enough air. Look for a squirrel cage type blower fan (used in air conditioning units, and cars, instead of the box type (computer fans), and you should be good. Adding a speed control (or purchasing a fan with one), will help eliminate over pressure.

I just bought a 1400 cfm squirrel cage blower off ebay for 50 bucks.

If you check Stamet's Mushrooms Cultivator, there is a complete formula for blower size (CFM) and HEPA dimension so you can calculate proper size requirements... PM me if you need the info. Glove box requirements are not as demanding as a flow hood, as flow hoods require a laminar flow of air, achievable only by the correct combination of fan/filter.
