Re: Substituting dry verm. with a filter disk...

I would think the SFD would accomplish the same thing as the dry vermiculite layer. However, I have never tried this. Sounds like a good experiment. As for pushing the needle through the disk, you know there's only one way to find that out. I don't feel like ruining one of mine either.

I don't know if I have helped you much. I just wanted to say it sounds like a good idea and is worth investigating.

A sharp heavy gauge syringe needle should have no problem penetrating the filter disks. If your planning to puncture holes in the filter with you inoculation syringe, your going to need the verm layer. Since your substrate might get contamed, through the holes that you punctured in the filter disks.

The non-sharpened syringe needles definitely do not puncture filter discs (at least those from FP). Learned the hard way, had to flame a drill bit and drill through the filter to avoid removing the caps on already prepared jars. Fortunately I had a verm layer in place too, no contams!

It would make sense(at least to me) that if you punctured a hole in your filter patch that the it would destroy the idea behind the filter patch. Having a relativly large hole in the filter patch would be the same as having an innoculation hole in the top of a mason jar. Just me thought though.
