You would probably be better off drilling a 1/2" hole in the metal dome lid and putting the filter disk under it instead of trying to use the filter disk alone as a lid. Using the filter disk by itself can dry out your substrate and would make it a bitch to shake. If you did not already order the filter disks, save yourself some bucks and go get a package of polyfill pillow stuffing from Wal-Mart. Drill a 1/2" hole in the lids and stuff it with the polyfill. Sterilize the jars with some aluminum foil over the tops, and inoculate right through the polyfill. This will allow gas exchange and is a damn sight cheaper than the filter disks.------------------ "I have wiped entire civilizations off of my chest with a grey gymsock!"

Thanks for the tip Space Farmer. I love it when someone shares ideas that save me money. If it wasn't for this message board, I would have never been able to have the success that I have.------------------ I get by with a little help from my friends....

How much are filter disks?? Is there a supplier online to get them at? I was thinking about upgrading a terrium to the HAWK TANK, but haven't ever seen filter disks (but then again never really looked).

PappaKaps, filter disks are available from Fungi Perfecti online http://www.fungi.com/ . They are a bit spendy, but they are supposed to last damn near forever. If you are thinking about the Hawk Tank, I have a couple of modifications that will save you a lot of work and some $$$. Instead of using a glass aquarium, use a large Rubbermaid/Sterilite storage bin available at Wal-Mart or Target. It is much easier to drill into and a damn sight cheaper. I drew a little diagram of the setup I have. I'll try to post it.

Did you guys ever check out the Kaz non-evaporative humidifier you can get in the drugstores for like $17 ??Spinning disk cyclonically picks up water from the resivour and throws it against the splash comb creating tiny droplet humidified air you can pump into a terrarium. In a review of all humidification techniques this want was ranked pretty high. I have broken mine in with three nights of running over the past week and when I get a chance to go to the growers haven of Home Depot to pick up some lengths of garden hose and plastic plumbing pieces I'll test it out in a terrarium and see if the days of stagnant air, mold, and contams are gone. Here's a shrunken picture of the older original unit, the new ones are more spacey looking, gray and the air filter is on the back of the unit even though it still has the popped up top look to it. (I hope the filtered air input didn't pass by your notice!)

Lots of props to spacefarmer for the beautiful diagram. Due to space limitations I can't use my beautiful 9 square foot dome tent and needed an alt. Peace all.------------------ shroomleprechaun ------------------------- "What a long, strange trip it's been..." -------------------------

I don't know if I mentioned, but instead of Plexiglas, I drape the top of the terrarium with a piece of plastic dropcloth. The lid will snap back down over the dropcloth and make a tight seal. I cut away most of the center of the lid to allow light in. The wood I show in the diagram has been screwed to the piece I cut out of the lid, so I can cover the whole to block the light until I am ready to initiate pinning. I put a filter over the holes I drilled for venting the co2 on the other side, but I don't take any special measures to filter the air from the pump. So far it has met and exceeded my expectations. The whole setup only cost me ~$30. I added a couple of wire shelves to keep the fruiting trays off of the perlite. Perlite doesn't work very well if the entire surface is covered. The only addition I can suggest is a fluorescent fixture on a timer over the terrarium.------------------ "Not all drugs are good... some are great."

Thanks space farmer. I already have an aquarium though, it's a friends, so I'll see if I'm going to be able to drill holes in it, but if not, I'll use the SPACE FARMER TANK.Also, thanks for the links for the filter disks shane and spacefarmer.

mushroommagic.com has biofilters for $3.95 for 12. They are the size of a 1 pint jar mouth. I've ordered from them before and have had no problems. Hope it helps.------------------ shroomleprechaun ------------------------- "What a long, strange trip it's been..." -------------------------

PappaK, I'm sure other ways exist, but I drill holes in glass for other reasons using a piece of copper tubing and grinding compound. Cut the copper to about three inches and put the pre-cut (smooth) end facing out of your drill, then dip it in some grinding compound and start boring a hole...it may not be very quick but it works well and leaves a smooth hole.
