Re: casing methods

I crumbled one Eq cake on top of vermiculite and added some potting soil mixed with vermiculite on top. My first flush produced 45 tall thin mushrooms. Amazing

The SOS tek is in the Grow/Find section of the Shroomery... go to "Grow" and then "Casing"... it's in there...

i don't get it. Do you mix it with the substrate, layer it on top or ate the bottom.

Psychonaut:

Those pics of your water-crystal tek in action are great! I have a couple quick questions on your method, though:

What strain was that in the pics? Gulf Coast?

How many 1/2 pint cakes did you use for that one tupperware casing container?

Do you crumble up your cakes to case them, or slice them like bread?

thanks
c

Green Fever - just like any other casing , you layer it on top.

cactus - That is the Gulf Coast strain. There was only two ? pint jars in that tray. Those cakes where crumbled

The best casing tek i've seen is a combination of old and new. Grain spawn is used instead of vermiculite and brown rice. Quart jars are needed also. 12 quart jars, each filled with 200 gm organic rye grain and 175 ml water. Sterilized for 90 min at 15psi. Spores are injected through one hole in lid. Mix thoroughly. Incubation 7-14 days. When fully colonized the jars(spawn) are shaken to thoroughly break up the kernals of grain. Lay out about 2 inches of spawn into the bottem of a plastic tray. Next the casing is added. Peat moss with a sprinkling of lime and wetted til damp(so you can just squeeze a little water out). Cooked in oven at 180 F(low setting) in a foil basting tray($.50) cover with tinfoil for 2 hours. Casing is made, baked and allowed to cool(overnight) before using.
Sprinkle on the casing, careful not to compact it. Apply to about a 1 inch thickness. Cover the tray with foil and poke about 20 1/8" holes in the foil. Let sit for 4 days. So you can just barely see mycelium poking up into the bottem of the casing.
When it's time to put your tray in the humidity chamber, take off the foil and deep scratch with a fork clean with alcohol. Deep scratching is just fluffing the casing around without damaging the underlying mycelial mat. Put into the humidiy chamber.
Pinning occurs in about 10 days cropping in 16. Avg. per tray of 4-5 flushes big fat QP dry. Or not.
