Why is graduating high school such a big fucking deal?

It's not like you are much better off with a diploma than if you dropped out.  Unless you go to college after high school, your diploma is pretty fucking worthless.

And it's not that hard to graduate high school.  Why the celebration?

Whether it's important or not, it's a milestone. You only do it once... yadda yadda yadda.

You could say the same thing about Prom. Kids and their parents make it up to be a big  when really its just dressing up and hanging out.

I was saying the exact same thing when I graduated. the reason I think it's a big deal now is because you only get to do high school once.  Pretty much after high school its... "welcome to this shit hole we call modern society, have fun! hope you make it."

Basically RP, it's a big deal because if you can't even graduate highschool, you're not going to be reliable for a job.  It shows you cannot follow through and complete something, at least in the eyes of a company.  (as far as the personal goals you've completed, they couldn't care less, they just want to know you can complete a given task whether you're interested in it or not).

That's why a College diploma is so much more important than a highschool.  A highschool diploma is only important for getting yourself to that higher level of shitty class jobs, you know, instead of scrubbing toilets you get to flip the burgers.

Not long ago, graduating high school was not legally required and thus worthy of recognition. 

Nowadays, it is a celebration of mediocrity.


I consider it kind of a "cultural remnant"... or whatever....? :shrug:

I do agree, the legal requirement to graduate really ruins it.  Not only that, education has changed now that it's a legal requirement.  Education has gotten dumbed down to help push people through the 'graduation process', so that way teachers don't have to deal with it and students aren't getting held back constantly.

Really makes a high school graduation these days pretty worthless.  Oh yay average graduation GPAs are 2.5, how amazingly mediocre and dumb.

I'm 27, I'm back in college and I have a GPA of 4.0 (Only been back a year, but that's two semesters maintaining).  I don't find it necessarily Difficult to maintain a 4.0, just takes some actual dedication and will to learn.  It blows my mind how many people gets D's and F's in my classes, and how few A's there are in general.

There's always the exception. But you can't deny that the majority of people who do not graduate highschool are probably living shitty lives

I'd like to add that graduating high school is a big business.  Lots of money is made of the fiasco.  There really shouldn't be a disconnect between college and high school, yeah know, since you "HAVE" to go to college to be anything.

If they'd just continue the education process past the 12th grade, call it, I dunno, 13th grade, then maybe we would have a more successful and educated society. If that is indeed what we are suppose to have to "make it."

But yeah, it's so you can overpay for a class ring, year book, graduation photos, invitations, etc., $, $, etc.

I don't remember a graduation ceremony for elementary school.  Nope, not for middle school (junior high) either.

QFT.  There are exceptions, my cousin is an exception, he's got a house, all the toys you could want, doing great and doesn't have his GED yet.  Then I've got other friends who are scraping by wishing they had gotten their GED but can't find time away from work to study to get it. 

Then there are educated people who still can't fucking make it, like me... Getting a bachelors in science will probably do me better than an associates in arts anyway...


I only had senior photos taken.  Never got the class ring and all that waste of money crap.  Yes there's a ton of money involved, it sucks.  You CAN legally drop out if you take your GED, but I think they charge for that too..

When I got my GED and joined the army in 2001 the army paid for it or offered to I just paid the 85 or 90 bucks. :smirk:

All I did was show up and they gave me my diploma. I barely did anything. Mind boggling.

High school was a fucking joke for me. Freshman year I was suspended for a month after a bad incident that landed me in jail, but they let me back in like it was nothing and I had a 1.7 GPA by the year's end. Senior year I actually made it a point to skip as many classes as possible while still being eligible to graduate, which I ended up doing with a 3.1. I never went to a single school assembly even though they were mandatory, opting instead to hotbox cars, until the very last assembly where two proud lesbians announced their love for eachother and their startup furry porn website.

99% of the arcane math was forgotten to make room for things that matter. Computer networking, weight conditioning, and botany were the only educational classes I had. The rest were repetition of what I had already learned, or thinly-veiled indoctrination.
