Wild Bird Seed Preparation & "Sterilization"

In this tek, I'll show you how easy Wild Bird Seed (WBS) is to prepare for sterilization.
I've never had a problem preparing WBS in this manner and have been using it for years.

Link to My Journal

Supplies

- Wild Bird Seed (No cracked corn or fruits)
**Note: truskool says this tek will work with cracked corn in the WBS**
- Water
- Large Pot
- Pressure Cooker (Can be used as the Large Pot)
- Gypsum
- Strainer
- Measuring Cup for Measuring WBS
- Tablespoon for Measuring Gypsum
- Spoons for Stirring & Scooping
- Liquid Coffee (**Optional)
- Jars or Bags for Pressure Cooking WBS

Wild Bird Seed Preparation & Soak

*OPTIONAL - Pack a bowl & Crack a Beer.
- Fill your Large Pot with enough Water to cover the amount of WBS you're going to dump in it.
- Measure out your WBS & Pour it into your Pot filled w/ Water.
  - I've found around 1.25 cups of WBS per quart jar is just right, but remember not all WBS is the same.
  - No need to remove any floaters and/or sunflower seeds.

- Rinse your WBS until the water runs clear.
  - I use a spray nozzle & my strainer to help rinse it quicker. Normally, it takes me 4-5 pours from the Pot.
- On the final rinse, dump all your WBS in your strainer. No grains in your pot.
- Pour in a pint of liquid coffee & 1 Tbs. of gypsum per 4 cups of WBS.

- Fill pot w/ enough Hot water to cover the WBS.
- Stir up your gypsum in the water, then carefully pour your WBS into the pot.
- Give the WBS a good stirring before setting up for the night to soak.

- After 14-20 hours, stir the WBS & start the stove on High.
- Stir the WBS occasionally, once every 5 minutes is fine.
- Bring the WBS to a boil:

- Dump in the Strainer Immediately, or let Boil for no more than 60 Seconds. It depends on your soak time.

- Toss in your strainer until the exterior of your grains are dry.
  - This normally takes 30-90 minutes, maximum, depending on how often you toss.
- When the grains are dry to the touch, load your jars from 1/2-3/4 full.
  - Bags I fill to around the 5 quart mark for LC inoculation or 4 to 4.5 quarts for G2G.

Sterilizing WBS

Jars
- Tighten lids fully on your jars.
- If you're using My Lid Tek or equal, you won't need to cover the jars with foil.
- Start the Burner under your PC with enough water in it for the PC run.
  - Each PC is different, so I don't know how much each person needs.
- Load your jars in the PC while the water is warming up.

- Give the water a few minutes to warm up, then put on the lid & tighten it w/out the toggle weight on.
- Wait until the toggle valve starts spewing steam (the pressure gauge will go up a bit.)
  - This ensures that there's only Steam in the PC. Therefore, the Entire Interior of the PC will be 15 PSI & It'll hit pressure quicker.
- Put the Toggle Weight on your PC. Be sure it's the 15 PSI Weight.
- Wait until the Toggle Weight starts spewing steam or Rocking, then start your timer for 120 minutes.
  - You can do 90 minutes for smaller batches, but anything beyond 7 jars, I recommend the full 120.
- During Sterilization, the toggle weight should only Rock 1-2 times per minute.
- Let cool overnight, then inoculate as soon as possible with MS, LC, agar wedge or G2G.

Bags
***Sorry, no pictures in this section**
- Place a tyvek arm sleeve into the opening.
- Fold your bags accordion style, following their natural folds.
- Load your bags in your PC so they won't open. Make sure to place spacers between the bags & walls of the PC.
  - This ensures that steam will pass by all sides of the bags & the heat will penetrate better.
Also, it stops the bags from sticking to the sides of the PC.
- Once your bags are loaded, Place a plate or something PCable on top, as to not allow them to open in the PC.
- Start the burner on the stove.
- Wait until the Toggle Weight starts spewing steam or Rocking.
- PC according to amount of bags in the PC.
  - 1-2 bags = 120 minutes. I do 140 for 2 bags.
  - 3-4 bags = 180 minutes.
- During Sterilization, the toggle weight should only Rock 1-2 times per minute.
- Let cool overnight, then inoculate as soon as possible with MS, LC, agar wedge or G2G.

**As always with my teks, if you have questions or something is unclear, let me know.

Probably a stupid question, but I am new to mycology and mushroom cultivation, how else will I learn? So now that you have the WBS sterilized in the jars what tek are you going to use them for once they are colonized?

i like a certain % of bursted grains,so i simmer accordingly,
and the soak will get you most of the way to hydration, but simmering is where the sweet spot can be found

Its also used to get the right moisture content by steam drying the grain.  The boil is used to get the WBS piping hot so that you can steam the extra moisture off.

:stoner:

Ive prepped WBS like this for years.  It works perfect IME.  Im better at knowing what works over how it works

The grains are hydrated by the long soak. The boiling is to get the grains hot enough to steam dry themselves when you toss them in your strainer. I also seem to recall it helps kill some nasties that will germinate from the soaking that a PC won't get otherwise, but that may be hearsay.

Proper hydration & to allow for the grains to steam dry.

I don't get any slime after the soak & boil.
But, no, don't rinse it off. You'll rinse off the gypsum, too.
