Higher Goals
    #1812603 -

Who here has some sort of purpose that they sort of strive for, some sort of higher goal? I mean, where you still live your life and experience everything here and now, and all of that, but some sort of direction that you are heading into?

Myself, I am heading into a career in music, where I can write and record my own music and perform shows with my band, release records, etc, and sustain myself on that... basically getting to a place where I can create music and share it with others...

So, what about you guys? Any desire that pulls you in that direction?
Peace.

Myself, I think it is important to have at least something that keeps you looking forward to the next day, something that would satisy you to work towards.. enjoying every step along the way, etc. It keeps us motivated and positive thinking, and keeps us moving towards continous happiness... keep in mind, it isn't necessarily the destination that is what brings happiness, but the entire process of getting there...

With my goals, there isn't some destination, I want to continously move forward within my music obsession, eventually getting involved with conceptualizing and writing movies...
Peace.

I want to see a new world... or at least the beginning of one. I try to do whatever i can to get people to start and try changing their own life. To see that they too can reach their dreams... But more than that, to build something new. Something of my own creation, sculpt a building, something that echos life when you walk inside... I have everything to look forward to.

I hope EVERYONE here, and elsewhere aspires to be something more. They need to dream, they need to do something they love. THen everyone could make and master a skill... and do something well, we could multiply our efficency, and hopefully change some social structures we are all getting tired of. I think then you could see a brand new world...

I guess that is the world that i strive for... to do anything and everythign i can in my power to get everyone there.

Its like being a chemist... you set up the corresponding chemicals and conditions, you follow the direction for synthesis... and you begin to work! and you master it... and multiply it... and were making social change pills for the whole world!

I love your words, Zero7a1. I am going to be accomplishing the same thing, using my music as a well-disguised media.

We need something to dream for, right? Something that we can set out and create that is ours and reflects our deepest thoughts.. whether it is raising a child, building a skyscraper, or simply finding something beyond what you are doing now... we're here to find meaning and purpose, I guess.

And good luck to all of you, too.

I feel this is a good quote, about how i want to live my life...the virtuous way.

"Only do things you believe in passionately. Anything that you don't believe in, but you still do, is poison.
Spend every minute you can working (playing) as hard as you can. If your work isn't making you happy, you should find different work.
Dream big, dream a lot, and don't be afraid to fail over and over. If you do nothing but fight for dreams, even a low success rate is better than fighting for nothing.
Give away and share as much as you can. Ultimately a microbusiness can only compete on a global level if people believe in it as much as you do; it's not about getting customers. It's about building a team."

I too, want to influence a positive change in this world, and i do...person by person. But ive started focusing on me...and not burdening myself with unsolvable problems, such as humanity.

Re: Higher Goals [Re: PDU]

I read all of your posts and find them very beautiful.

I have come to realize in recent times that theres nothing I could do for myself...that would make me as happy as helping somone who suffers... All I see is suffering...people dying and crying...i know theres alot of that going on right now... I want to see it stopped... I identify those people with my family, and it makes me sick to think about my parents not having food or a family not being able to feed their children

americas motto seems to be out of site, out of mind...

I dream about giving more to the world than I have taken... but I know have alot more work to do...

A Mahatma (great soul) said this [Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj]
"I dont understand you people! [people in general]... your always waning what you dont have, and because of that you suffer...why dont you want what you DO have! then you could be happy! its so simple!"

that sums up my problems right there... i'm always looking for happiness outside of myself... but when I think about it.. theres nothing that I want more than what i already do have...my beautiful family... the blessings and experiences I have had... i feel very much in debt to the universe...not to mention that the simple fact that there is somone out there who cant feed their children no matter how hard they work...its insane in this world... i cant comprehend that...i think if I did I would be running towards them to help

I think this world needs more compassion

and so I hope that I can one day spend my time living productively...in nature... as nature

i feel a need deep inside of me to run to those I see suffering...

but i'm not a saint... i have not done all of these things with 100% of my time... i feel the need for that though

also I have to exist in this world... i need to get a job... I know how far money goes in third world countries, so if I could sustain myself here, while giving what i can to others...that would make me happy... that is my goal.... renouncing the world while living in it, trying to help it...

i also aspire to be involved with music....musics a wonderful form of meditation

Thanks Rastafari.

Its amazing, just look at this thread (not to mention many others)..So many people from varied race's, societies, upbringing's, exposure's...and we have a collective goal, to save the world.

Its hard for me to understand how "normals" can classify drug's as such evil's of society..

We all have a vast interest in psychedelic drug's, and we all want to save the world, co-incidence? of course not. It makes me so furious.

I wish i could show people 1 by 1...and i do, but i can only reach so many...undoubtedly a few thousand at best...throughout my lifetime, That drug's shouldnt be generalized, and demonized. Last week i shocked a social worker, and she admitted she was wrong, that felt good.

Anyways; " think this world needs more compassion "

And understanding, i believe understanding lead's to compassion, but people just dont care...

"americas motto seems to be out of site, out of mind..."
You couldnt be more right, GREED is bread into us...North Americans...but especially American's..."if it doesnt impact me, it doesnt matter"...so depressing.

I wish i could force understanding upon some people, but i also feel guilty...Who am I to impose my value's on someone else? Yes, i may be more vituous, but their live's are their's to live. I can live mine as i want...and as much as it pains me to see them living falsely satisfying live's...I feel so conflicted about my "right" to try and change them; "show them the light" so to speak.

Rastafari, you're the one finding negative things in swami's posts about your posts. Check this:

"I dont understand you people! [people in general]... your always wanting what you dont have, and because of that you suffer...why dont you want what you DO have! then you could be happy! its so simple!"

This is what you said in your post right? And you agree with it, correct? Well, why is it that you sit there whining and whining about how you want no suffering??? DUDE it's only making you suffer, which adds to the suffering of the planet! Do what swami says, want the compassion that's already here, don't be idealistic, acknowledge that suffering is an inherent part of the universe.

I mean, most of us have some direction where we are heading out and can reach a lot of people, from the Peace Corps (which is a direct way of doing it, a very selfless act, I must add, kudos, man! have fun) to music, art, etc... it only takes a few acting from a higher mindset to effectively change the world...

Not to be facetious (Gawd knows that I would never do that!), but how much education does it take to tell people to be faithful to their spouse (most African AIDs comes from heterosexual relations with prostitutes) or, if not, to wear a condom (or at least use Saran Wrap and a rubber band)? It is not like teaching new farming methods.

Hm.. their spouse might already be affected... and most of the people don't have any money or food, condoms would be out of the question... seems like most AIDS probably doesn't come from prosititues, then...

Some people receive little to no education in their life, sometimes entire countries... your point is not noted. hehe

Yeah, well, Bush is a man who is only pushing his own (and the puppet masters behind him) agenda to get rich.. while he is further ruining this country.

There is a point of return now, but Bush will see to it that there won't be long for very much longer, and spending that much money that we cannot afford to give just to turn around the rest of the worlds sour opinion of him and his presidency is pointlesss, and it won't work (to stop AIDS in Africa, or his real reason for doing it, improve his popularity on this side of the Atlantic).

People here aren't brainwashed by his propaganda, and when you aren't subdued by it, it is so simple any easy to see what he is really doing, what he is really trying.. and I realized it well BEFORE I came over here... anyone want some fucking oil? I can give you your fucking oil!

If you can vote, and you are over there, I strongly urge you to fucking throw this guy out of office on his ass, just like his fucking father.

heres some #s:
-34.3 million people in the world have AIDS -- 24.5 million of them in sub-Saharan Africa. Nearly 19 million have died from AIDS, 3.8 million of them children under the age of 15.
-Reduced life expectancy in sub-Saharan Africa from 59 years to 45 between 2005 and 2010, and in Zimbabwe from 61 to 33.
-More than 500,000 babies infected in 1999 by their mothers -- most of them in sub-Saharan Africa.

Ten percent of the world's people live in Africa, but it is home to 90 percent of the world's HIV-infected children. In sub-Saharan Africa 470,000 children die every year from AIDS. For more than 90 percent of these children, the deadly virus is transmitted from their mother.
Of 30 children born to HIV-positive mothers, approximately 10 will acquire the virus simply by being born. Another four will become infected from breast-feeding. Most of these children will not live to see their 5th birthdays.

we do more than just educate, we set up support centers, give free testings, and there are so many orphans....its an epidemic..

I agree that what is happening in Africa is dangerously troubling, and there should be people there helping, but the thing should be a world effort, not Bush donating BILLIONS of dollars that we can't afford to give... all as a very obvious ratings scheme... he's too worried he'll get ousted, and he should be.

What about this debt of ours? We can't keep the power on in half the country.. all because of one mistake... we are off fighting wars in a handful of countries, we have provoked the Israeli/Palestinian conflict to its ugliest.... we haven't found the men behind the outfits suspossedly out to kill us all (or that helped Bush advance his security laws, give him something to "fight" agansit, in the promise that they could make it out with their lives that were promised to shortly end if not....).... most of our states our bankrupt.. most of the people in the country are egotistical shells of human beings that show very little purpose....

Where does the money come to fight these wars, keep our economic situtation under control, and to send billions of dollars everywhere? I'm going to the embassy to vote agansit Bush when it is election time.. not that it will matter, as the absentee ballots will likely get locked in a room somewhere, yet again....

Maybe the english should feel remorse for their Imperialism. Strip a country... divide it... Rape its lands... Go right into the jungle... and bring out from it the bounty of disease. I dont know... does anyone here think that British Imperialism could have a lot to do with what is going on now in africa? I mean despite the fact they would probably be just as poor and undeveloped? I mean i knew that the french were in there... i didnt know too much about the other ones. Maybe its just the fact that the english were so big... and no sun ever sat on their soil  :smirk: . But yeah... do you think imperialism for that matter, ravaged that country? It seems as if Africa has always had these brutal problems. I wasnt meaning that there was a bad difference of imperialism... im sorry if my words seemed partial, but i see how my lack of description, and no mention of another "party" involved, could have been construed. My apologies, and thanks for teaching me something everyone  . But i mean all in all... i mean do you think its the waring, imperialism, that has brought Africa down... Sort of left it to ruins and decay?

Yeah George bush is a tool Fireworks_God, no doubt about that.

Africa was for the most part fine, living in their tribal societies, accumulated a lot of natural knowledge, just like the Native Americans, until we came in, shipped a lot of them off to do slave work, and then divided the continent between the English, French, Spanish, and Dutch..

Before that, they were entirely self-supporting, until we crippled that system, used them for what we wanted, and then pulled on out.. leaving them with the responsibility to live in OUR world. Of course, we really haven't helped them do that, and everything went down hill... we were like the locusts who killed all the crops and left the continent to the four horsemen. It isn't any wonder that the only really sucessful country is South Africa, and that it was largely under British influence until the end...

I mean, our society has been evolving for centuries, there's wasn't evolving, they were happy where they were, and then we profited off of them and gave them our standards, when they obviously don't have the knowledge base to live up to our standards.. we ruined the continent. Soon enough the whole thing will be a sparsely populated desert. Maybe Bush should use that money with money from the rest of the world to build up a STANDARD meeting education system.. as education is the only tool that can save them, and we haven't yet given it to them...

Bush is going to effectively waste the money, and do it all on his own, to win the approval of the rest of the world... too bad it will only reinforce the rest of the world's opinion of him as the cowboy who wants to do everything on his own, instead of cooperating with the rest of the world, which is what would improve his rating over here..

But then, I don't credit him with logic, so of course he doesn't get that..
Peace.

I know this is off-topic, but I think this needed some commentary:

Pre-colonial Africa was not just tribal societies, even if we restrict the discussion to Africa south of Sahara. There were city-states and empires both in the west (Ghana, Benin, Mali), and in the south (Great Zimbabwe).

Quote:
Before that, they were entirely self-supporting, until we crippled that system, used them for what we wanted, and then pulled on out.. leaving them with the responsibility to live in OUR world.

Ghana traded with the Arabs more than a thousand years ago, as did Benin and Mali later on. They were not entirely self-supporting, because they paid gold for salt, cloth, horses and weapons (source). And I don't understand what you mean by "OUR world"? We all live in the same world, but I presume that's not what you meant. Are you referring to the fact that McDonald's hamburgers and Coca-Cola is available in Africa or something like that?

Quote:
Of course, we really haven't helped them do that, and everything went down hill... we were like the locusts who killed all the crops and left the continent to the four horsemen.

But such things have happened before in Africa. The city-state called Great Zimbabwe was depopulated and abandoned long before european conquerors arrived, because the soil eroded due to too intense farming. Or as the same thing is called nowadays: raping of the earth because of greed.

Quote:

South Africa was free from british rule in 1910 when the Union of South Africa was formed. This was long before any other british colonies got their freedom. Perhaps that's why it took so long before the non-white majority got their political rights: apartheid was a boer invention, not a british one.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Are you saying that "we" are forcing these poor african noble savages to evolve, and that they would be happier if they could just stay unevolved? Or what are you getting at? Please elaborate.

Guess I didn't know too terribly much on the subject, but I was expressing the impressions that were made on my mind... Thanks for enlightening me, you've cleared some things up.

Africa was for the most part fine...

In the Biafra holocaust circa 1967, some 3,000,000 Ibos were slaughtered & deliberately starved by fellow Nigerians as they were the equivalent to African Jews; well educated, successful and hated for it. Eurpean influence had NOTHING to do with this genocide.

I was talking about before we started to get involved.. I am not too terribly informed on the subject, but I guess I thought I had been.. it seems to me that before we got involved, however, they had been quite happy in their existance, and really didn't want to become involved with us, just like the Native Americans...
Peace.

Slavery and brutal tribal warfare existed in Africa long before the white man came.

The Native Americans were not peaceful beings. They also raided and killed other tribal members.

Yes, but that doesn't mean that they didn't want to leave their existance, necessarily. But, yeah, the world sucks, we're bad when not tuned into the higher consciousness, can't change the past, etc. etc.
Peace.

I think the point is that when A does something bad to B, that means that A is being a bad guy, but it doesn't necessarily turn B into a good guy through some inverse guilt-by-association law...

Do what swami says, want the compassion that's already here, don't be idealistic, acknowledge that suffering is an inherent part of the universe.

spiritual idealism is the most scarce resource around. we all know what a perfect body looks like, and the methods to work toward it (if that's what you want- I know I like looking good naked...) so why should your soul not work towards a more perfect state?
realism = lazy, we need visionaries to keep the evolution of the human condition moving forward.

that's a huge (chasm spanning even) leap of reductionism. men are not men, some men know more of the good life than others do, likewise some cultures know more about the good life than other cultures do.

I like clean air, clean water, and meaningful work. with those criteria, can't you see how an argument for native values makes sense?

Suffering is not an inherent part of the universe. We ourselves make suffering, and we can also get rid of it.

Eliminating addictions, working towards a state where suffering does not exist is not impossible, and the fact that it is idealistic doesn't make it a bad thing... it's a lot better than saying "Oh well, my life sucks, I experience suffering, nothing I can do about it".

Myself, I'm a little bit stronger than that..
Peace.
