Totally on the same wavelength as you. I get in such heated discussions with my otherwise rational and intelligent friend who wanted to call everything god. :nonono:

Astoundingly, I'm generally much more reserved in person, in that I tend to avoid conversation. When I do make conversation, I find myself doing much the same thing. Except at some point, I throw something at someone and call them names.

Why would you believe in something you can't rationally justify? I can't comprehend that. :strokebeard3:

I've always awaited a satisfactory answer to this one as well. Usually I just get "I don't need ration or logic in my life, I have Jesus :crazy2:"

Quote:
  •     The creation of the world is the most marvelous achievement imaginable.
  •     The merit of an achievement is the product of (a) its intrinsic quality, and (b) the ability of its creator.
  •     The greater the disability (or handicap) of the creator, the more impressive the achievement.
  •     The most formidable handicap for a creator would be non-existence.
  •     Therefore if we suppose that the universe is the product of an existent creator we can conceive a greater being - namely, one who created everything while not existing.
  •     An existing God therefore would not be a being greater than which a greater cannot be conceived because an even more formidable and incredible creator would be a God which did not exist. Ergo: God does not exist.

Anselm's ontological argument was never very interesting or compelling to me.
Platinga made a much better, but still intrinsically weak, attempt at it.

OP should read The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus.
Somehow I always find myself promoting this book on the Shroomery but I think it would be great for those experiencing existential despair.

Me neither, I think the rebuttal I provided absolutely crucifies the argument. Shocks me how many people still rely on it as some form of validation.

Emotional and intuitive reasons. The belief surfaced during some the worst days of my life and gave me the reassurance to keep going.

I know that there is no way my belief can be proven, so I don't try to argue for the existence of God. It is my own belief used for helping me cope when negative emotions surface. It helps me enjoy life the way one can enjoy a sad film. Instead of a bleak and scary unknown.

Maybe I'm just emotionally weak and depend on an irrational belief for reassurance, but it's still my own belief: God is the embodiment of all consciousness existing to create a story of tragedy and comedy through it's own interactions. No morals, no divine interventions, just omniscience. All our fates are predetermined, we are here to experience and appreciate it.

None of this can be proven, so when I approach it with a scientific mind I won't assume it's validity. But it is reassuring at times.

I bet one of you will quote mine the "emotionally weak" sentence.

Hm, I'll have to read that. I'm surprised I haven't yet since I found both The Myth of Sisyphus and The Stranger to be very good reads. Absurdism/existentialism is where its at :yesnod:

OP: how could something exist that does not exist? How could there BE "no" meaning?

But I still get your point... some how there is a universal truth, whether it be a meaning or a lack there of. I prefer to think that the universal truth is a positive one, or a meaning... not something that we need to create bust something inherent to being and I try to live my life in accordance with this universality.

There is no universal truth. It's our instinct to look for meaning. If there were a universal truth, we'd all be in more agreement on things.

That's like, you're opinion, man.  :thedude:

So there's nothing that's true throughout the universe? What about the form of your body? Is it not true everywhere that you are somewhere?

edit: you "truly" believe that there is no truth? Does that mean you do not feel any responsibility for your actions and that nothing will ever really matter?

Typically when one says "universal truth" they are talking about some underlying meaning for the Universe. But there is no meaning. Meaning is a purely human concept. The Universe simply is. Just because something is "true" throughout the Universe doesn't mean it is a universal truth. And we could talk about uncertainty, quantum nonlocality, local hidden variable theory, and other things that may refute the idea that the being of something is a truth. But I think that is irrelevent to the original assertion anyway.

Why does it seem impossible for a human to discover a Universal Truth? Are we not one with the universe?

without life there would be no time, they are both inseparably linked.

life - motion - time - they are all linked and without life the universe would not exists at all.
