diversify out of us dollar
    #17912174 -

I would like to diversify my investments out of the US dollar.  What are the best ways to do this?  My thinking is that holding Swiss franks or Singapore dollars would be preferable, considering the Feds reckless QE unlimited policy.  Is my concern even justifiable?
Are there any easy ways to invest in real estate outside the US?
Then there is gold and silver as well.

There might be some decent paper currencies in the short term, such as the Australian dollar, Canadian, or maybe even the Singapore dollar, but the problem is the world is starting a global currency war.

When Japan announces that they are essentially going to devalue the Yen, what do other counties such as South Korea and Singapore consider to remain competitive in the global economy, a devaluation as well.

There is no safe paper currency in the world today, not one currency is back by anything, gold will change this issue at some point the in the future. All currencies are going to lose tremendous purchasing power in the years ahead, and most people will suffer a lower standard of living as a result. Gold and silver will be the only safe haven when it is all said and done.

I really like palladium and particularly the one ounce canadian maple leaf palladium coins the royal mint made for just a few years.  advantage of a coin versus a bar and denominated in $50 canadian dollars.

Now, the reasons I like palladium are many.  It is truly rare and needed for catalytic converters that are going to be more and more in demand as pollution chokes china and people there and elsewhere drive yet more and more cars.  Palladium is only mined in a few places mainly South Africa and Russia.  South Africa seems to have a problem keeping the electricity going at times.

The Russians have had a stockpile of palladium leading to some price point uncertainty based on supply.  The good news is the industrial demand practically guaranteed as the other choice is platinum for catalytic converters at 2+x the price.

Silver is good too.  Canadian maples denominated in $5 coins seems better than Eagles denominated in $1 USD.  But both are 1 ounce although the maple is a little higher purity.

One of the problems with the metals is keeping it safe from theft or confiscation.  Then try leaving the US with it...I fear the TSA will just take it.  Does anyone think that increasing their allocation of PMs in their investment portfolio is wise? If so what percent would be appropriate?

I am going to look at Palladium.  I have not considered it before.  Thanks for the suggestion.

You are welcome.

Traditionally PMs is recommended at 5-10% of investment portfolio in physical metals.  GLD and SLV and even PALL are not to be confused with physical metals.

I would stay out of currency trading. The old pros are the sharks eating everything else in the water. You could buy and hold foreign currency, but you lose to inflation, and appreciation isn't too likely, in the long run. If the U.S. goes down everyone else goes with us. The wealth of Switzerland is really just the wealth of U.S., U.K., Germany, France etc.
There is probably an easy way to invest in foreign real estate, but I think it would only be easy if done through a mutual fund or similar instrument. There are real estate funds, and there are international funds and some are concentrated in specific geographic areas. So I assume would you could find some international real estate funds with geographic concentration. The problem with these more "exotic" funds is that they charge higher expense ratios.
This has nothing to do with real estate, but in my couple of decades of investing, my international growth funds (invested for purposes of diversification) have under performed all my U.S. funds.
