Dogma for the People
    #1787791 - 08/07/03 11:23 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

To carry on with Sclorch's thread....

I agree that Dogma acts as the opiate of the masses.

I dont know whether I see that as a negative thing though. Perhaps it provides structure for society? One day some of the crazy stuff that we discuss on these boards may even take over as the new dogma! (scary thought )

I guess im saying dogma aint pretty but we need it!

I don't see how this is... almost all war throughout history has been directly related to one dogma conflicting with another. Obviously mine cannot be wrong, therefore you must change yours to match mine, or I will kill you.

Dogma is much more akin to the carrot dangling from the stick in front of the donkey, imho.

Seuss got it right. The dogma of religion is what I think Marx was talking about.

According to m-w.com:
Quote:

1 a : something held as an established opinion; especially : a definite authoritative tenet b : a code of such tenets <pedagogical dogma> c : a point of view or tenet put forth as authoritative without adequate grounds
2 : a doctrine or body of doctrines concerning faith or morals formally stated and authoritatively proclaimed by a church

So, yes, dogma is the opiate of the masses in that our society and perceptions of what everyone else believes dictates how most people live their lives. The dogma of religion, and the second definition of dogma, have a greater impact in some people's lives [talking about today's world], though in the past I think that religion was more central to the downtrodden proletariat masses and therefore that is why Marx singled it out as opposed to all dogma in general. Maybe the other dogmas weren't as profitable or sustaining to the upper class's lives as religion.

I mean in the sense that dogma acts as a shortcut to avoid original thought so people can avoid making their brain hurt by thinking independently!

Ahh... ok, in that sense I would tend to agree with you.

I think I mostly agreed with you, just said it differently, for example:
Quote:

So, yes, dogma is the opiate of the masses in that our society and perceptions of what everyone else believes dictates how most people live their lives

People want to know what everyone else thinks about a situation, and then they take that and apply it to themselves based soley on the fact that lots of people claim to feel this way.

I think we're both right

Marxism is dogma, however, religion is a competing dogma and cannot be tolerated if marxists expect their's to prevail.
