WARNING: If You Download Torrents * 6
    #17869210 -

I can't believe these network providers are so easily rolling over under pressure from the music/movie industry.

If you download torrents, install PeerBlock, make sure your client encrypts connections, and use only private trackers!

--

In a new warning system launched Monday, Internet service providers will begin alerting users engaged in online piracy and possibly limit repeat offenders' Internet access.

Called the Copyright Alert System (CAS), it'll be adopted by five of the most popular service providers, including AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Verizon.

With "the implementation phase" that begins Tuesday, content creators, such as movie and music studios, will send notices of those who are thought to be downloading files in the "peer-to-peer" format to Internet service providers. Alleged violators will then be notified by their Internet service provider.

The citations are meant to educate consumers about the consequences of piracy, says the Center for Copyright Information (CCI), an advocacy group formed by movie and music studios and the Internet service providers to create CAS.

Users will be sent a maximum of six alerts "with an increasing degree of seriousness," CCI says on its website. There are two "educational" alerts, two "acknowledgement" alerts that require a response from the recipient and two "mitigation" alerts that impose "minor consequences to emphasize the seriousness of the problem," it says.

For those who receive six warnings, Internet providers may reduce their Internet speed or redirect them to another landing page to review and respond to alerts prior to resuming service.

"Consumers whose accounts have been used to share copyrighted content over P2P networks illegally (or without authority) will receive alerts that are meant to educate rather than punish, and direct them to legal alternatives," writes Jill Lesser, executive director of CCI, in the organization's blog.

Those consumers who believe they received an alert in error will have access to independent review, she says.

The warning system was scheduled to launch late last year. But citing Hurricane Sandy's effect on its final testing schedules, CCI delayed the implementation in November.

"We need to be sure that all of our 'I' s are dotted and 'T's crossed before any company begins sending alerts," Lesser wrote in her blog in November.

Someone from a another forum I use to visit posted this and thought I would share.

Quote:
I keep seeing users posting in threads recommending other users to use peerblock/peerguardian when downloading from torrent sites.
Last year it went round all of the good torrent sites that peerblock/peerguardian doesn't work so not to use it.
Here is the thread that was posted on most of the torrent sites that i use, hopefully it help everyone steer away from using those two programs, as it says the best way to keep safe is to change your ip or proxy.

Why blocking peers doesn't work (peerblock/peerguardian)
Simply blocking the access to a peer list that participate in a torrent download does not stop ANYONE else accessing the same .torrent and viewing the list of those in the list.
Your real IP will still appear in that list and can be traced by the very people you are trying to block!.

If an "Anti P2P" organization (APO) were to be connected to the "pool" of peers using an IP obscuring software program you would see their FALSE IP address along with your OWN. If this list were to be used to reverse look-up these IP address's you can be identified (unless you are also using a program to obscure your IP.

This image has been resized, click here to view the full-sized image.

You will still be seen in a list like the one above if the APO is using an Internet connection other than their own, or one they are known to use.
What PeerBlock (PeerGuardian) is supposed to do

Prevent the participation of APOs in file sharing networks. But, "Does PG2 work?"

All the blocking of APOs does is to stop them from injecting "bad" data into the torrent stream. Or even worse (on their behalf) contaminating the downloaded file with a virus or trojan. It has also been reported the APOs post purposely infected torrents to snare the unwary file sharer.

PeerBlock (PeerGuardian 2 - PG2) is undoubtedly a fine program and works the way that it says. It was developed with the nobelist of intentions - it is just that it is useless (IMO) in keeping you from detection.

There are also other side effects of using a program such as PG2 - sites that you want to access are blocked as they are in the list of IPs that PeerBlock has determined as "hostile". Sure, you can tell PeerBlock not to block HTML requests and your browser will be able to "see" these sites (such as the BBC) - but this is like locking the door after the horse has bolted.
There are legit reasons that you may want to block IP addresses

However, these are not really relevant to keeping yourself secure from detection.

Some of the reasons are described above but the fact that they are excluded from access to your computer from their own IP address doesn't mean that they are not present in the peer list all the same!
Peer Guardian and ip Blockers Don't work

From the comments of the isohunt tracker for the download of Up (An Oscar Nomination, 2010)

Got a not from ISP courtesy of Disney Police, PG2 wasn't working the day I got this copy, should of just waited, note to all it is being tracked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! use ip blocker or peer control program.
Note:

PG2 means PeerGuardian 2

If the "Disney Police" were looking for p2p'ers who were downloading "Up" they would more than likely to havebeen using an Internet connection other than one registered to a Disney company. Blocking ip addresses that have been identified to be belonging to Disney or one of their affiliates would only, possibly, stop them downloading parts of the file from you. Their ip and hence their connection would be prevented from accessing your computer and thus (possibly) not being able to download the parts of the file that you are downloading. Their ip address would not appear in your Peer List but, as I predict, the ip that they would be using would not be their own!

The only advantage of blocking the likes of Disney is that they will not be able to upload "bad" data into the torrent-stream (or wrse malware - although I have yet to see this proven). This only prevents the torrent from becoming corrupted, slowing down and possibly useless.

I presume that the commenter means that he or she recieved a NOTE forwarded from their ISP and that PG2 is Peer Guardian 2. The conclusion that Peer Guardian was not working on the day that they made the download is an indication, to me at least, that PG2 is no defense against the detective efforts of the copyright holders.
Undercover Cops rather than "Disney Cops"

The ONLY way that you are going to stop the agents of the film and music companies from detecting your participation in a P2P file-sharing network is to obscure YOUR IP!

Also Private sites FTW!

If everyone uses Peerblock, doesn't that mean there will be no torrents to download anyway?

No, PeerBlock doesn't work that way. It blocks only incoming connections from known honeypots and music/movie studio networks. Besides, torrents will still work even if you block ALL incoming connections, it's just not very efficient that way.

Here's basically how it works. Your client gets a torrent file from a tracker. Then your client reaches out to other peers named in the torrent file to start the exchange. If a movie studio is in the swarm looking for people to sick their lawyer on, then when you reach out to their client, it will not be able to establish a connection to you because PeerBlock will recognize their network and block the connection. But you will still be able to connect to other people because their IP address is not in the PeerBlock database so connections from them are allowed. See how that works?

In any case, use only private trackers that are invitation-only. It's unlikely that a music/movie studio will be able to snag an invitation to a private tracker because the invitations are only handed out by current members. Nobody is likely to hand a music/movie studio an invitation. Even if they did, they'd probably be detected and locked out pretty quickly and PeerBlock would block them regardless. But avoid open trackers like Pirate Bay anyway. Stick to private trackers like what.cd or revolutiontt.me or whatever. Of course, you'll have to get invited by someone who is already a member first and you'll have to keep up your ratio or you'll get banned.

As for wares, if you mean Usenet groups, they're generally safe because that's not peer-to-peer. You're only vulnerable if you upload a copyrighted work and don't hide your IP address through TOR or spoofing or whatever. On the other hand, Usenet doesn't usually have the same breadth of content or quality of a torrent tracker.

Simply blocking the access to a peer list that participate in a torrent download does not stop ANYONE else accessing the same .torrent and viewing the list of those in the list.

This is true, but from a legal point of view, simply having your IP address on a list is not generally enough for a lawsuit against you. If this were not true, I could add anyone's IP address to a swarm and get them in trouble even if they don't download anything.

The studio lawyers need to actually establish a connection to you and get data from you on the record before they can formally go after you for sharing intellectual property. To that end, PeerBlock does exactly what it's intended to do.

You know what's incredibly ironic (and stoopid) is how those of us who pirate movies make our copies without the god damned annoying as fuck FBI warning you can't skip. The rest of society that's honest and pays for their movies is force-fed the FBI warning even when though they paid for their movie.

So the thieves don't see the FBI warning and wouldn't give a shit if they did, and the honest people are forced to see it even though they paid not to see it.

Fucking studios and the fat, old men who run them will never understand. We'll just have to wait for them to die off and younger people with progressive thinking to take over.

Oh, jesus. It's always a lady old enough to be my grandmother's mother. Pulling out a coupon for every item, then she finds the ONE coupon the cashier missed. Then the clueless cashier has to call a manager. Once that's sorted, out comes the checkbook. Then looking for a pen. Not to mention you wait for her to ring up $397.84 of frozen food so you can pay for a lightbulb and a box of condoms. But this was the only register of fourty seven registers that was open.

Fuck this world.
