I have seen those on TV too, there like 6 for $20, anyways they look pretty bright on TV so it seems like it would do the job, allthough I know nothing really to do with shrooms and lighting...

I recently bought a couple of lights for my reptiles that I might end up turning on my grow chamber for an hour or so every day or so. They are self ballasted, mercury vapor lamps that put out almost as much uva and uvb light as natural sunlight. The price is a bit steep at $45 bucks a bulb, but, for reptiles, there is nothing better. I thought as long as I had them, it could not hurt to experiment. If anyone is interested, You can read more about them at www.uvheat.com

Hello all,

I hate to see this thread on the "touch-lights" (or tap-lights, whatever they're called) die... for us inconspicuous growers, this little battery-operated light might be really handy if you can't rig up a plug-in fixture to light your terrarium...

Does anyone have any more info or first-hand experiences with these lights? Such as, how long they'll go on a set of batteries, will they do well in intiating pinning and fruiting?

thanks
c

Well I took my tap-light apart and I is a small incandescent bulb. Im not sure how it rates spectrum wise but would it be possible to plug in a small circular flourescant light into it?

mrselfdestruct:

Excellent work on the tap-light dissection. I'm glad to see that this thread didn't die a premature death...

Why would you need to switch the incandescent bulb with a fluorescent one? Does a standard incandescent bulb not provide the adequate light spectrum to initiate pinning and fruiting?

thanks
c

Well from what I know about lights, Incandescant bulbs glow too hot and cant be placed close enough to an object with out cooking it. Flourecents have greater life span, emit the entire color
spectrum, and dont generate heat. Also, Flourecents are more energy efficent, and output more lumes per square inch.

I was also wondering about lighting.....i have several water dragons....and a python.......i use a 18" flourecent fixture that represents every color in the light spectrum ...(so they say)...all those good uv rays and stuff
as well as heat bulbs day/night...the 18"s dont throw off that much heat at all.....and all my lights are on timers.........sure would like to see more post's on lighting req/ideas..................for my dawg of course..............

I should point out that light does not play much of a part in the growth of mushrooms. They are not like plants, they do not get any energy from light. Just a little blue spectrum light is needed to promote morphisis.

Remember, in nature, the mushroom germinates, colinizes and begins to pin while in total darkness underground.

hey max......the reason this post caught my eye was that when i was young (and drunk)one time i went to the beach.....it was real overcast and pretty cool out.......to cut to the chase i burnt like a piece of toast (missed 3-4 days of work)someone told me afterwards (the prick)that the sun (uv rays)can go thru clouds like i go thru underwear.does the sun penatrate the top layer of soil?....btw my 18" flour. bulbs only send rays out about 15-20" or so in the cages...........they say there worthless after that(cept to read a book)im wondering if anybody exp. with them? Theres bulbs you can buy for just about every color in the spectrum for plants and reptiles. What do i know............im just a lil turd!
