Re: Kepler Space Telescope Finds Billions Of Earth Like Planets Near Earth [Re: Beanhead]

There's no reason to bring much to this table. It hasn't been validated by any substantial evidence. It seems to be nothing but speculation, just shy of wild guesswork in some cases. What would you like me to do?

No one is saying it is impossible. That would be disingenuous. As far as I can tell, the sentiment shared is that due to a lack of empirical evidence suggesting otherwise, there is no current reason to believe in any extraterrestrial visitors or anything of the like.

Hope that clears things up for you.

I don't think you do get it. All I'm discrediting here is that we are being and have been visited by intelligent life. I'm not saying that it isn't out there in the universe somewhere.

Ah okay, guess I was misunderstanding. Well I don't know, speculate with me:heart:? Imagine silicon-based entities! Away with our limited flesh and blood! What's wild? I told you it was extremely simplified.

Sorry Joie for misunderstanding, it's what all nighters do to the brain once in a while :kingtard:

I dunno, I've been unable to reach a fully culminated theory as to the properties of an extraterrestrial lifeform.

I will admit to being unimaginative when it comes to speculating on the nature of extraterrestrial life. I cannot fathom a concept such as lightspeed or greater than lightspeed travel, and the physical demands that sort of voyage would impose on a lifeform.  My idea of  life is understandably biased to the definition of "life" as it is observed on Earth. I would imagine something capable of traversing such vast distances with apparent ease would be far different than our perception of a living organism.

Space robots would be cool.

No, the complete lack of ANY evidence on either side means both scenarios are just as likely.

Again, I appreciate your skepticism, but I don't understand why it's only narrowly applied to the things you don't believe. You should be skeptical of everything, including accepted facts.

Here's what we know. We know that medium sized star has in stable orbit, a watery planet that is in the Goldilocks zone (not too hot, not too cold). On this planet, over its 4billion lifespan, a form of life based on DNA coding has expanded it abilities, its complexities and its intelligence through ever evolving species of plants, animals, fungi, etc. if this is a one in a billion event, then I would say there is a good chance it has happened elsewhere. That being said, if they are more advanced than us, they may not be interested in us, and if the life is less advanced then they have no technology. Even if they are out there, there is very little chance to communicate with them, and almost zero chance that we or they could travel the distances required.

Yeah, I hear you. I can't imagine that either, that's what always bothered me most. Our flesh and blood really does hold us back.

If only we were like that, atleast time wouldn't be an issue then... (atleast that's one holdback solved  )

i used to like you joiedevivre. i used to think you were a smart and insightful poster. this sentence is dumb, and has shattered my view of you, as it makes no logical sense whatsoever. since when does the lack of evidence = a "most likely scenario"?

applying that same logic; since we have no evidence that there is water on planets outside of our solar system, it is most likely the case that water only exists within our own solar system

plenty of intelligent and tolerant humans?
maybe.

plenty of humans ready to accept and embrace a lifeform more powerful than them?
most certainly not

And saying they are in our galaxy is hardly the same as saying earth like planets  are "near" earth.  Our galaxy is vast which is an understatement.

Why does it even seem likely there are other intelligent beings that have acquired the ability to travel such far distances when we haven't even done that yet?

While I whole-heartedly appreciate your skepticism in this situation, I can't help but find this line of thinking completely arrogant. What do human achievements have to do with the possible achievements of extra-terrestrial lifeforms? To assume we're the pinnacle of intelligent life in the universe seems awfully narrow-minded.

Look at what humans achieved in the last 150 years. I have zero doubt that other life forms
have had the time to evolve much further than we have. Science and technology continue to
reinvent themselves as old technologies become obsolete and theories of the past are disproved.

In my humble opinion there is no limit to what an advanced life form can achieve given they
have enough time. The universe is much stranger than fiction.

There is going into space, then there is TRAVELLING through space. Humans can spend a long time in low earth orbit only because the magnetosphere extends out far enough to prevent long term damage from radiation. Once you get further out, humans can only survive a relatively short amount of time. We are a long way from going to another planet, yet alone another star. It is quite possible that humans may never be able to travel outside the solar system. Inability to get anywhere in a time frame short of tens of thousands of years just makes interstellar travel unlikely for us, and for any other intelligent life form.

Do not make the mistake that technology is limited. Given the time your quote "its quite possible that humans will never be able to travel outside the solar system" is ridiculous.

And to assume that another advanced life form does not or is not capable of evolving thousands
of years ahead of us is just silly. Your human rationale is stuck in a limited space. Expand that shit. You think that you are being realistic but that is not the case.

Even if we could travel at speeds approaching light speed, it would still take 4 years to reach the nearest star, and all but a few dozen are more than 100 light years away. An object's mass increases as it moves faster, and therefore it requires more and more energy to accelerate that object. There isn't enough energy in the universe to accelerate a spaceship to the speed of light, not to mention decelerate it back down.
