It will "compromise the fluidity of the site and the years of content contained therein".

I know, it's really fuckin gay, I wish I could delete my own threads like posts too, but I guess you're overriding other users' options to have their posts stay on the forum.

If you made a cult thread and it was some amazing new tek and I posted my own personal results, only to find them deleted by some asshat, I'd be really pissed.

I just saw Newbie delete his thread he said when he made it "I guess I just had a bad day that day" or something then moments later it was gone. I mean if it's the teks you're really concerned about fine just don't allow thread deletions in the cultivation part of the forum, but for whatever reason the Op doesn't wish to discuss the thread like Newbie I still think they should be allowed.

That's usually in response to people having a OP-out ability where users could somehow either have uncorrelated posts or all their posts get delete but if an entire thread gets deleted that wouldn't ruin any fluidity for nothing is remaining.

Though uncorrelated posts where the user who made that post is no longer showing wouldn't really ruin any fluidity either.

I think that mod example is a good one, not because "hey a mod did it so we should to." but because it signifies a legitimate reason to why someone would want to delete a thread or end a discussion that they started. Yeah it'd suck if some good mushrooms information got deleted that wasn't added to the main site however not every post is cultivation related and from the sounds of it neither was Newbie's.

Yeah, honestly it was a thread that would typically be locked because it was bumped from two years ago however the majority of posts were actually recent posts. All that aside, he didn't have any reason to keep it around and I respect that I see absolutely no issue with what he did, I just hope eventually we can too.

In some cases, I'll dump a thread on a user's request. Usually I don't, but once in a blue moon, someone actually has a good reason and there's no particularly useful content in the thread I dump the thread.

But the value of a site like this is in the content it houses. For that reason, we in general don't facilitate the deletion of posts, let alone entire threads. Plus, broken links tend to suck, so that's another reason to not delete threads altogether.

As far as I'm aware I know I'm new here but isn't this just the forum? Who cares about peoples personal* life.

The forum is valuable because of its content. It draws thousands of visitors for a reason. Many of them arrive here through ol' Google because they were looking for something and we happened to have had it. This place is like the Trader Joe's of the internet.

Google recatches webpages, and even if it was gone before it did you can still view the catch until it gets removed when it's recrawled or whatever you wanna call it. Even Facebook will allow users to delete their account along with every wall post, status, status comment, forum post ect... Twitter will too.

Even so are you saying Newbie shouldn't of deleted his thread?

So if someone deletes the original post, why not just let the whole thread be deleted?

Simple:  You may delete your own post, because it is your own post.  You may not delete your entire thread, because it will often contain posts from others that are not your own.  I know that if I spend a lot of time and thought composing a reply to someone, and then they delete my post, I would be pretty disappointed if not even a little pissed, and surely less likely to respond to threads with such a comprehensive reply in the future.

As has been noted, you can petition for a moderator to remove a thread, but if you don't have a good reason, or if it contains thoughtful replies, it's probably not going to happen.

It doesn't matter if Newbie delete his thread was right or wrong, the thing is he did and that was because he personally didn't feel the same sentiments he did the day he made that thread. I'm sure not only he would ever want to, why deprive the other users?

Or you could be like Newbie and want your thread deleted, posts are a dime a dozen and if it was really that important you could start your own thread.

And that's exactly what the issue is.

You could just, you know, write a post and wait a day before starting a thread or stop making threads that you're going to want to delete later.

That whole personal responsibility thing that flew out the window decades ago.

Frankly, whether the initial point of reference is gone isn't relevant to my consideration of your request.  If I personally compose a reply to someone, the premise of the original post is often included either explicitly through a quote or implicitly through the context in which my response is presented.  Even if it is not, I may want to reference my reply for use in responding to a similar thread (or conversation, email, etc) in the future.  The plain and simple fact of the matter is, you can continue trying to construct an argument for giving members the option to delete their entire threads, and I'm telling you very clearly, you will be wasting your time because it just isn't going to happen outside of journals.

Case in point, this reply of mine can stand alone even if you delete the first post of this thread.

Doesn't mean from time to time like Newbie you wont want to delete a thread because you come off as irrational and over reacting

I wonder why they're so concerned, like how many people do they think will delete their threads lol y would you want to force them to keep them if they didn't want to anyway?

You'd be surprised at how many people would start deleting content. It happens frequently in the Hunting section, where people post pics of their mushrooms, get an ID and then delete their pics  I guess it takes some time on here before they recognize the value of being able to go back in time and see what finds have popped up in the past.

The example I use is I have a tek from almost 10 years ago that I still get thank-you PMs for every few months.

It's nothing major and not a huge contribution to the website but has apparently helped a lot of people in the time it's been there.

Just like anywhere else on the internet; don't post what you don't want the world to see.

It's not a hard concept at all.
