Actually, studies suggest that depressed people have a more realistic perspective on the world than happy people.

Isn't there a way you can be realistic (having been in the throws of depression in the past), and yet still find a meaning that serves you and choose to see the world as beautiful in this regard?

No imo.  But I would say you can find meaning and find "some" beauty in the world. A subtle but important difference.

Some.  Ok.  I concede to you here.  But I really think it's all in what you choose to focus on.  For example, I am very selective about when I allow myself to ponder some of the heavier issues that make me "feel the weight of the world on my shoulders," because I am aware of the potential for it to bog me down and leave me feeling very gloomy.  In my years I have learned to focus on the things I can do and impact and change (mainly myself and my immediate surroundings, selfish, ain't it?)  and really trying to see the positive and beauty in life.  And when I say this, trust me, it's not all rainbows and unicorns over here, I have definitely been described as negative, "down to earth", "realistic,"  all that bs. But ultimately I think the logotherapy-ish notion described in the article I linked allows one to find a sense of inner peace which can, at least to me, feel like I have a grasp on reality and how shitty things can be, but also to see how beautiful things can be.

Contrast, is, after all, what allows us to see things more clearly, no?  :sunny:

I don't disagree with you.  IMO once you fully grok what a shit hole this place is the only logical move from there is suicide or focusing on the most pleasurable aspects of existence as often as possible.

Ignorant still.. lol...damn thought this thread woulda died a long time ago.. Sigh..yes we all know the world is in a shit whole...it isn't a shit hole itself..if you think that then you might as well just go kill yourself IMO. There is plenty of beauty on this earth that people mindlessly shrug off as nothing..You are one of these people who do this...and you will never be able to find true happiness..you'll die old and miserable, feeling unaccomplished.. you are pretty much worshiping death due to the fact that the place you live is currently going through a bad phase..instead of trying to make things better...you rather complain and not do shit..
Again if knowing you are helping others to be happy isn't enough..then you will always be miserable..Stop trying to take everything on at once..Do things in baby steps...change the world step by step at a time...and stop complaining about what a shit hole it is.

What a bunch of shit.  I'm old but hardly miserable.  In fact I'll bet my life is a lot richer than yours.  Most of the time I'm having fun and living large in a beautiful place.  But I'm not a god damned idiot and I have empathy for others not as lucky as I am which is most of humanity imo.

And how is the place I live going through a bad phase? That's rich. I live in one of the primo places in the US.  You really don't have a clue what you are talking about do you.

Jman420,

If your argument sucks so much that you can't make it without calling people names, then perhaps your argument sucks on the merits and you might want to reconsider. In any case, debating by name calling is against the rules here. If that's how you want to debate, go do it in the OTD forum where insulting each other is how they debate there.

Read the rest of the rules before posting again.

Consider this your warning.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Knowing you aren't the only one that feels this way is relieving.  I see this as a positive thread.  :sun:

Oh, and something that helps me sometimes... Cannabis! :bigblunt:

Some say you just gotta take the good with the bad and try and find happiness there   When I smoke some bud to myself it's pretty easy for me to find that place.  Care while not caring, or something like that.  Kinda like meditating, I dunno.  It helps me

It's strange how depression works.  I haven't been depressed in weeks... Most likely due to every 2-4 days of MXE use.  None the less when I read my OP it feels like that wasnt even me who wrote it.  I still feel the same way as I do in my OP but instead of ignoring all that is good and not selfish, I see it now too.  Not everything is so black and white as my OP suggests.

^^  :/

Chemical dependency to simply mask it doesn't mean you're all fixed up.  Try doing some time without the MXE and see if it lasts.

I guess thats why you're more attention seeking than most of us in here.

Is it so that you're not strong/deep enough to sort the root?

 I'm not dependent on MXE, i'm dependant on bupe.  I use MXE to re-program my mind to it's original settings, i don't see that it has any recreational value what so ever.

I have been clean from heroin for a while now, it feels good to not fuck up... i think that's adding to my positive life outlook.  As well as doing well at the university.

I have been doing well at the university and volunteering at the local needle exchange, I have just been doing things that i think are good.  Not because of money or some kind of benefit but because it feels good to help people.  I think i'm turning over a new leaf here.

I had been confusing happiness and fun for the longest time, but i think i get it now...  and no i'm not on any drugs except my daily prescribed dose of Suboxone.

Now it's time to read "The meaning of life" by Richard Taylor... this ethics class is mildly entertaining.
